Yup yup yup, totally relate to all of this. I started making videos 11 years ago and it only turned into my full-time job this past year and as much as it's been a dream, it's also been difficult to transition from experiencing the internet one way for a decade, where I could read all my comments and interact with everyone in my audience without thinking twice about it, to now having to set pretty strict boundaries with myself in terms of reading my own comments because of how they impact me mentally. Even though 99% of my comments are great, if I get my eyes on that 1% that takes something I say and purposefully misunderstands me or takes something vulnerable I've shared and uses it against me because they clearly either don't like me or are projecting some internal struggle onto me- it ruins my entire day. It's hard! It's hard to watch someone really believe they get you and understand you and then confidently get you so wrong and hate you for it. Anyways, really appreciate your content Nick. I've been especially inspired by your consistency and ability to show up and entertain no matter the subject matter. I really loved seeing this kind of video from you!!

Yeah, comments can be a lot. I actually left a comment about this on William's video, but for me one thing I run into is that for whatever reason, I assume most people interacting with my stuff share similar values and sentiments to me, so when I get a comment from someone that is super shitty, I always think "well, I would pretty much never leave a comment like this on something, so why is this person who is a rational adult human being leaving one on my video? Is it because I am that fucking bad? Did I say something harmful? Is this insecurity I have about myself that obvious to everyone else?" And the reality is that a person who would leave shitty comments like that isn't the person I am imagining them to be. I try to be aware of that, but it can be pretty tough, especially when a comment is well-written and thought out as it is clear that the person leaving it is intelligent in some regard. Ultimately, I have tried to take a "okay, but who asked?" approach to comments, and it has helped a bit, but frankly the best strategy to avoid burnout is to just not read them, which fucking sucks because there is a lot of value in them.

Yeah. I don’t make videos, but, as far as criticism, something that helps me personally is to think about what they said for as long as it took them to think of it. I used to cry when people called me dumb. Then, I thought about how they spent 2 seconds making that insult, and I spent hours thinking about it. So now, I would spend 2 seconds thinking about it. Basically, not worth the time. Also, I try to remember that they don’t know me. And that they have things they need to improve on too, as we all can improve and get better. That’s a part of life. Just remember, no one is perfect, not even the person who comments negatively on your videos is perfect :) also, if it gets really bad, therapy helps. P.S.: I’ve actually watched some of your videos :D I liked them, for what it’s worth (not much lmao). I also love the way you do your thumbnails. Good luck ^.^

Bingo. There are people who like to put others down, who don’t first think, “is this helpful? Is this kind? Is this wanted?” There is a big difference between constructive criticism and useless negative comments like “you were better before your house burned down.” And even with constructive criticism has to be handled tactfully. I try not to give constructive criticism unless it’s asked for. If something isn’t my favorite but isn’t hurting anyone, I try to leave it alone, especially if we are talking about an individual creator like most of the people on RU-vid.

I'll scroll through comments and if someone is like " I liked the song but it was really emotional and he's just flipping out" like BRUH that shit takes me out for the whole day. and it's not even that big of a deal because they even said they liked the song and the video but like damn... idk why that little sinking feeling happens so fast for comments like that. It's also hard to ignore comments and stuff when a lot of my inspo for new videos comes from the comments.

It’s crazy that a RU-vidr that has done nothing but entertain people with their skills is able to receive so much hatred for no reason. People can make the internet such a difficult place to enjoy. @arifike

I think it’s a personality thing. Some people it just affects more. Like Jenna marbles. She did nothing wrong and never really got hate other than trolls being assholes. She was crazy well liked. But those trolls and the same things William mentioned about wanting to do things perfectly and second guessing everything to the point where you just dread posting made the anxiety and depression it gave them a nightmare. I’m sure I’d be that way if I were a RU-vidr. And then people like Ludwig it doesn’t seem to really bother him. He just seemed to kinda brush it all off. And I’m sure Ludwig and William receive similar types and amounts of hate, if not Ludwig receiving more maybe.

I don’t think is a single video on the internet that doesn’t have a negative comment or some kind. You can show something as simple as a puppy in a costume and there will always be a few people who go to the extremes and call it abuse or something. I’ve seen the most innocent videos just get one negative reply but it gets pushed straight to the top cause people respond and argue on it which just breeds more negativity. It’s pretty impossible to escape.
@lilyaautumn
@lilyaautumn 2 года назад
the lack of human decency when it comes to people interacting on the internet vs. people interacting in real life situations is so crazy to me. how do you forget that someone is real when they’re on your screen? if a friend of yours started a channel would you comment the same negative shit there? no, i didn’t think so.
@idontwantahandlethough
@idontwantahandlethough 2 года назад
Yeah, it confuses me too sometimes. I imagine it's hard for most non-trolls to understand lol. I think I can make sense of it.. it's like.. remember back in grade school, the first time you were going to ask a girl out? Did you call her or do it in person? Phone's a lot easier, isn't it? And similarly, have you ever noticed how people often avoid eye contact when they have to initiate a difficult conversation? Same kind of thing, just taken even further. It's easier to "be honest" (which in many cases means "be terrible") with someone when you aren't forced to fully realize another person's humanity, whether by proximity, by voice, or by any number of things. The internet makes that incredibly easy. You can (but definitely shouldn't) effectively decide that that person you just insulted isn't real, since you're never going to see meet them. And in a way, you'd be right: they _don't_ exist in your universe. The problem then is that people seem to forget that other people are just as human as them, and feel just as many feelings as they do. So even if the troll's victim doesn't exist in the troll's universe, the troll certainly exists in the victim's universe, since they just ruined their day with their comment. And that's the problem... a lack of empathy. That's usually the problem when you get down to it, unfortunately :/ One thing I wonder about is if younger generations are better at this stuff than older gens. For example, I'm an [older] millennial, and when I started using the internet, it generally wasn't used to communicate with people you know IRL (except for email, AIM, MSN messenger.. Very specific platforms for that). We knew that we'd never meet any of the people we talked to, and even if we did we'd never know. I'm not sure if it's possible to explain to anyone who didn't live through it, but there was a distinct notion of "internet people" and "real life people". I had internet friends, and I had IRL friends. Those two groups never had any crossover whatsoever, and to some extent, the internet people did actually feel "less real", in a certain sense. I no longer feel that way about people online; which is good, since the internet has changed a lot since then (and so have I). Anyway, I think that might contribute to people feeling like they can be assholes online, but I have no way to prove that. The internet is still fairly new in the grand scheme of things.. it'll take us a while to figure everything out. But we will! We always do. So far, anyway. Shit we are so screwed, aren't we? Edit: obviously the darker answer is pretty clear, and I'm sure you know it cause you kind of alluded to it: there's literally no consequences for saying shitty things online, at least 99.99% of the time. If you say shitty things to your friend, they'll be angry with you and eventually won't want to hang out with you anymore. So you don't. I'm just not sure how we fix that without destroying what makes the internet so great, but somebody will hopefully figure it out. I'm going to stop typing now, I clearly need sleep!

I'm glad you brought up the consent of criticism when talking to people in more "intimate settings" (like discord and dms etc). People forget about it all the time and it's one of the first things you learn in art school is how to properly criticize, what should be criticized and will the criticism actually help the person in a constructive way and isn't just going to tear them down. People are using the excuse of bad opinions as a coverup for bad criticism. I love your videos Nick. Please keep up the amazing work I love your stuff! (Edit: edited for clarity on my comment)
@tobywood9156
@tobywood9156 2 года назад
it took a long time to learn to accept criticism for my art, but im glad i can now. the way ive always seen it is that its only criticism if you can offer help or advice to fix it, and its just an insult if you cant. telling me my anatomy looks weird but not giving me advice on how to make it better (ie, hands are too small) is just an insult, not criticism
@jaimelourne371

@rooty
@rooty 2 года назад
The criticism that sparked his "consent for criticism" point was the textbook definition of good constructive feedback. He even used the compliment sandwich technique. Literally all he said was the skits could stand to be more concise. He also said it in the context of a discord specifically for small content creators. And nick was surprised that constructive criticism was posted in that discord?
@kr0wn597
@kr0wn597 2 года назад
@@rooty which is totally valid. The actual criticism I have no problem with but the consent of criticism. You should always ask: "hey, I saw your videos and I was wondering if I could offer some constructive criticism" before you actually lay down the criticism otherwise it can be taken as a jab or an insult. We also don't know word for word what the guy said and if Nick is paraphrasing the critique and it was harsher or softer than he depicted it. Either way, you should always ask before giving a critique, unless when someone posts it they say: "critique welcome". Sometimes people aren't in the right head space all the time to accept criticism from strangers.

I know it's a buzzword at this point, but it goes back to parasocial relationships for me: people feel like they are "friends" with a RU-vidr or streamer, so in their mind it's okay to give them unasked-for criticism. I agree. I also think outside opinions just don't matter--particularly in creative endeavors. The art I make and am happy with is a direct expression of a part of me, so I could care less if someone else doesn't like it or thinks it could be done better. If they think that, then they have the freedom and option of doing it the way they see fit when they express themselves.

What you are talking about is called the negativity bias. The human brain is wired to recall and hold to negative instances over positive ones which is why if you go on a trip and have a fantastic time, but one negative thing happens that negative thing is what you predominantly remember. The same goes for comments, you have can lots of wonderful comments, but just a few that hit in what feels negative for you can ruin it for you. The negativity bias is worth looking it and learning about because the more you know about it and understand then it make it easier to try to overcome it. And for people with mental health issues or illness the negativity bias can play a really large role in effecting the way one thinks. I mean it always easier said then done about overcoming the negativity bias, but personally I don't think it hurts to try and I don't think it hurts to learn about something new if it is new to anyone.

No you're totally right! We share our art because we're happy with how we expressed ourselves. It completely dampens the feeling when someone feels the need to input comments that are neither warranted nor helpful.

I really felt the weight of the stuff you said about your lips. As someone with trichotillomania (basically hair pulling disorder) and I have some mild "bald spots" as a result of it. I'm told by my parents all the time while in the midst of absent mindedly doing it to *stop pulling all my hair out* which just makes me angry and feel judged. I don't know, I guess I'm trying to say that I remember that Twitch stream where you talked about body positivity vs biting (or doing whatever else) to your lips and it really stuck with me. I remember seeing your frustration and seeing so much of myself in that moment. You're absolutely justified to have this sort of reaction and to expect people to leave you alone about your appearance especially. Thank you Nick, and congrats on 200k before Halloween :)

i have trichotillomania too - and my friends and family have a VERY hard time not being critical with their comments about it. i know they want what’s best for me, but having my sister yell “STOP PULLING” doesn’t help. i even told a therapist about that once and they say it’s extremely unhelpful and can even cause the behavior to increase, and even after telling them that, they still have trouble not yelling at me for it. i have started exhibiting signs of dermatillomania as well so people commenting on Nick’s chapped lips also rubbed me the wrong way. I chew on my lips and pull on my cuticles a lot as an anxiety response and when people point that out, it makes me more anxious, and i chew/pull again. pointing out a flaw or abnormality is never nice no matter the intention. i’m glad someone else has a similar feeling but i’m sad that you experience it as well and it sucks that people won’t control what comes from their mouths or their hands (when typing).

in the spirit of positive comments, i have a neurodivergency where certain voices make me feel a deeply negative emotion, often crying or getting angry; as a result, it's really hard to find certain creators whose voices i actually genuinely like and can listen to. that's why i really got into commentary, because the whole group have really nice sounding voices. out of all of them, yours is probably the nicest to listen to, if that doesn't sound too creepy (?)

You kinda joked about how this video was going to be boring at the beginning, but even though it's a little different from your usual content I don't think it was boring at all. The conversation about how to treat content creators online is one I've seen more and more creators stepping into recently and I think that's important because we've created this environment online that suggests people who receive excessive negativity somehow deserve it just because they chose to exist online, and we need to fix that attitude. The way you address that in this video is very articulate, and I appreciate that you're doing so.

Jesus, I didn't realize how much this would hit home for me until I recalled a very recent Instagram comment (which I deleted eventually; felt like shit about it enough for too long) of someone pointing out flaws in my artwork. They DM me sometimes and always like/comment on my stuff, but then they go and say that? And, yeah, this IS going to sound arrogant/rude, but I don't care-- their art wasn't exactly perfect, either, though no art is really perfect. (...My point is that I don't personally enjoy their art, so who were they to talk, I guess--) It really is a warped way of thinking. I feel like it's low grade bullying, with the similarity being that they're trying to expose a flaw or insecurity to compensate for some of their own. Or maybe some of them are really just that dense. I dunno. Glad you made this vid, dude :')

as a small creator, I rarely ever get a lot of comments. Usually they're pretty positive but when I get one bad comment, I am stuck on it for weeks. Recently, I've screenshotted nice comments and put them on a folder on my computer to look back at them when I get those negative comments. I talked about being burned out and feeling like my content wasn't performing well and I got a comment of someone saying "well, that happens on every channel" and like, I didn't need to hear that in the moment when I was clearly distraught and angry about my channel's performance. I absolutely hate those comments where people give me constructive criticism when I didn't ask for it. But, if I don't get any comments it's hard for me to know if my video was good or not. Even if my RU-vid studio says it's a 1 out of 10 or something, I totally get needing validation as a content creator! Thank you for talking about this, Nick and I hope you feel better soon! My initial reaction to the reddit post about William's content was "well, that's kinda what you sign up for when you go into the entertainment industry", but then I realized that was total nonsense... the answer isn't to treat the entertainers of this new medium the same awful way we treat our standard hollywood entertainers.. just because we do something doesn't mean we _should._ Tradition is never a good enough reason on it's own to keep doing something. We should be treating everyone better!

I really related to this video. I used to post on TikTok, and even just seeing one comment under hundreds of positive ones made me self-conscious and more anxious to upload. I became so critical of myself that sometimes it would take me 2 hours to finish one ten-second video because I would just keep doing it over and over because I wanted to get it perfect. I got too anxious to post a video and now I won't even go on the app because every time I open the it I see the number of followers I have decrease because I've been so inactive.

Completely agree what what you've said here. I especially resonate with the stuff about how viewers can treat streamers, since I'm friends with and mod for a few streamers. People forget that the person on screen is a real person that you don't know and you can't just SAY stuff without thinking about it first! And while content creation is a privileged job in many ways, it's also a high pressure job, and some of the things people say can stick with you for much longer than someone may have even intended.

I had to stop watching streams live because there's so many people in the chat having this kind of buddy buddy behavior it's so easy to get sucked into it from a viewer's perspective I had to force myself to take step backs. It's definitely a noticeable phenomenon. I don't know how it can be fixed to be honest. But I hope as it becomes more common, more creators will put boundaries for themselves and this behavior will be a thing of the past.

I see what you’re saying about giving unsolicited criticism. It’s like when one of your friends gives you advice that you didn’t ask for out of nowhere, it throws you off even if it isn’t meant to be negative. Unfortunately RU-vid is wild and because there’s a comment section people feel like they have a god given right to shit on you lol. Just because you *can* do something doesn’t mean you *should* but it’s easy for people to hide behind screens. I doubt the negativity will ever stop though, and I hope you find a way to filter the bull shit out of your brain because I’m sure it adds up fast. And I hope you get well soon!

You articulated this so well. I had a TikTok account that unexpectedly starting blowing up and with the numbers came so much awfulness from complete strangers on the internet. Soon enough sharing the content I enjoyed making became a huge source of anxiety because there was always at least a handful of genuinely hurtful comments about irrelevant stuff (my appearance, my voice, my delivery). I ended up deleting the whole damn account because “clout” was in no way worth sacrificing my mental health for. People online really need to check themselves because I can guarantee that they wouldn’t say that stuff to someone face-to-face, nor would they appreciate being on the receiving end of it.

i hear you and i think it would be unfair to criticize someone on their youtube comments/in their twitch chat. that said, a subreddit that is for the fans of a channel, who oftentimes support the channel through views, ad revenue and even patreon/subs, are allowed to discuss their opinions on the quality of content. it sucks that this public platform causes people a lot of distress, but it's one of the costs of becoming a public figure, even online...i think it's unfair to keep fans (who ultimately are the source of revenue) from having genuine discussions on content quality and potential improvement in fan spaces. if that's not something a creator can handle, then i think the creator has every right to not check that subreddit, as they're responsible for their own mental health. that's the thing about creating any kind of content or art. like people had and have the right to review media, people also have the same right to review and critique other forms of intellectual property, like youtube videos. and a critique of your skill or your talent is not an attack on your person or inherent value as a person. i think anyone in any line of work will be criticized or given feedback for improvement continually, as nobody is ever perfect at their skill. and that's okay, it's important to hear the feedback and not take it as an attack on the amount of work or heart that you put into your work. i can't imagine how exhausting it must be to hear criticism so often as a youtuber might, given their platform. i, myself, will only ever receive it from my supervisors or peers. it still stings and hurts and sometimes makes me not believe in my inherent worth as a person. so i can get it, somewhat. and yet i still need that feedback to do better. i still need to know that me getting upset by it wasn't the other person's fault. sometimes it stings more if they're kind of right, too. i don't know, i'm the same age as nick, and so i feel like this is a real struggle that new adults tend to face as they enter the workforce more prominently...all my friends and i feel this same way :(

i feel like an important thing to consider is that there's just so much less separation between online creators and their fans than there is for mainstream celebrities who write/act in/produce media and their fans, which creates some difficult dynamics in a society where people aren't used to creators actually seeing most of the backlash they receive. additionally, a lot of the criticism i see coming from creators' fan bases tends to be overcritical, or delivered insensitively/without any actual constructive intent behind it. ultimately, fans are completely capable of withdrawing their support of someone's content at any time they want if they're unhappy with the direction the creator is taking; i understand why that isn't the first step someone would want to take in that scenario, though, and i don't want to dismiss the value of genuinely constructive criticism entirely.

I know content creators often feel like they have to justify themselves with, "I know I have an easy job" or "I'm very lucky to have this job" but the thing is, being self-employed is really hard. You have to be very self-motivated, you have to manage your whole business, especially in entertainment where taking time off is iffy since there isn't a consistent or guaranteed income, it can be very mentally taxing. The job isn't necessarily easier. I would say, maybe less physically taxing than some jobs, but then again I've seen creators pull all nighters to put something out on time, and sitting at a desk for hours out of your day isn't great for you. But there's also the emotional and mental burden I think a lot of people forget. It's very common to want to know what everyone thinks about your work, something you put time into, and it's going to sting when someone criticizes or critiques it. So Nick if you read this, you're doing great, and content creators don't get enough credit for the bs they put up with.

Nick i sit down and watch your videos everyday. I have some mental illnesses that make it really hard for me to leave the house without having several panic attacks, whenever i need to calm down and have laugh I watch you or Kurtis because you guys never fail to make me happy. Keep doing what you're doing, you're making a lot of people happy :)

It's a hard problem to solve because part of the issue is simply human psychology. This isn't an issue where most people are behaving badly. This is an issue where, even when negative comments are a small minority, they still hurt and hit a lot harder than all the positive things.

I don’t usually comment on youtube and that’s my bad but I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your content. Nowadays I have a very stressful and demanding schedule with less time to spare for entertainment stuff. But when I am trying to take my mind of things I know I can find some great videos at your channel which I do find new and funny every time. Thank you for your work :)

The unwanted criticism thing is infuriating. I really like to draw and people really like to put their fifty cents when it's the most unwanted thing and somehow manage to do that on worst days possible :') And what do they expect you to answer?¿! Your everyday videos help me through this strange time alot

Fellow, artist, can relate. Keep your head up, you're doing great and you definitely don't need anybody's opinion when it comes to art-- art is subjective and about expression, not "perfection". Imperfections are what make human society beautiful and unique.

I feel like creators are dealing with the same negative aspects of being in the public eye that big celebs deal with but in a more personal and ruthless way due to the nature of the internet and the disconnect it can bring.

I know I'm just another drop in the ocean but, I've been seeing more and more youtubers burning out and I've been watching you post daily with anxiety that you too will burn out. Look after yourself dude. I cant imagine the youtuber lifestyle but if my opinion means anything, I'd rather you last long rather than burn so bright.

I think the internet is going to get to a point where all the good wholesome creators will leave because of all the hate and we'll be left with nothing but people like Tana Mongeau and Jake Paul. Ugh.

it's sad to see the state of entertainment nowadays. people got too comfortable online, plain and simple. most, if not all, these people saying dumb shit wouldn't say it in person. Nick, you're doing great. idk if it helps, but the openly hateful comments aren't just on RU-vid. Sports people are insane these days. WE LOVE YOU NICK AND ARE PROUD OF YOU.

Your videos never bore me and I like that you want to talk about different things in your videos, I think that’s why I like your videos so much, you talk about a lot of different things that other youtubers don’t and it’s unique

The Tesla he bought was like 40K or something. Good but not luxurious. Some people just want RU-vidrs to be poor and unsuccessful to feel better about themselves and their “real” jobs and call it “being relatable”.

I really loved this video! It's always super interesting to see a creator talk about their feelings and their perception of their community etc. so thank you for this not at all boring video :)
