This week, we've headed north to Calvados in Normandy for a special show all about the first Norman king of England, William the Conqueror, precisely 950 years after he won the Battle of Hastings. The young Duke of Normandy's childhood was anything but ordinary. And after consolidating power in his own Duchy, he went on to win the Battle of Hastings on 14th October 1066 and was crowned King of England ten weeks later, completely transforming history on both sides of the Channel.

Pretty much. Actually, the History Channel's series "Vikings" is a precursor, loosely based on English and French history. William is supposedly descended from the Viking Rollo.

Aegon Targaryen's conquest is very very similar to William the conqueror in our history. There is an argument to be made that the Targaryens are partly french which gives the conflict between the 7 kingdoms and the Targaryens a whole new meaning.

Ya only the royal families had enough to keep their family alive. Remember the plagues and lifestyle of peasants made it near impossible to reproduce and keep your family strong so many blood lines died out during the medieval ages, and only the strong ones survived. Crazy that his life isn't more known in France itself, considering the effect William's invasion of England had on French history. I mean had the invasion not succeeded, presumably the Anglo-Saxon England would have continued, the hundred years war probably wouldn't have taken place, and 1000 years of Anglo-French rivalry might not have happened.

Interesting fact. When he took England, he eventually went back to Normandy, he did not try to incorporate the two as if they were the same realm, he ruled them separately and differently as if they were their own separate entities. It's hardly unlikely that William & King Harald Hardrada of Norway didn't have a pact to invade England at the same time and split the kingdom. William was only held back a few days due to contrary winds. Or did he stall on purpose to wait for the outcome ? If King Harold 11 hadn't had to fight the Norwegian Army first, hundreds of miles away, he would have made short work out of William's army. There is no doubt though that William was a very brave if ruthless individual much like an angry wild boar in chain mail.
@hybridphoenix7766

I would like to thank whoever decided to post this video to this site. The video on France 24 kept chinking, so it made things difficult to watch and listen. I have always been fascinated by William the Conqueror, the Normans and the Franks/French that decided to take on England in 1066. Their military tactics were absolutely brilliant. It is a shame that William and his Normans are frowned upon in British society. The Normans were brutal with their tactics, but I believe that the Saxons and their invasion of Britain was just as bad. It makes me wonder if British school children are taught only one side of the story that makes the Anglo-Saxons rise up on a pedestal and criminalises the Normans for doing the same thing that they did centuries earlier.That said, I would like to say that the earlier comments on this video (that aren't about what this video is about) is unnecessary. What does modern Islam have to do with William the Conqueror?

In fact Normans are descendant of vikings who were raiding coastal France, England and Scotland. I think it was Charles the Simple or Pepin the Just who, realizing he couldn't get rid of them, decided to give them the Duchy of Rouen to permanently establish themselves. Those Normans mingled and inter-bred with the local French and adopted their way of life. After generations they basically became French. Norman-French.

Both of my parents’ lines descend from him. My dad’s side goes back to Henry II of England (through his illegitimate son William Longspée). While my mom’s goes back to Edward III of England (through his sons John and Thomas). Ironically enough, William’s rival, Harold Godwinson is an ancestor of Edward III through his mother.

Stands to reason he's not a part of the curriculum in French schools, because then they have to explain the reason why Normandy is called Normandy and that William was descendant of a Norseman called Rollo. It opens up a can of worms that the French don't really like to talk about.

They were Vikings who held their own against the well-established Franks in their own lands. And on top of that conquered the Saxons and Danes on that still hotly-contested island, and also held their own against the Celts there. Among people who fought and fought well, they fought well and loved to fight, and fought to win, and won.

Very interesting stuff but I still don’t understand why this is impacted the western world so much. It’s as to say that the Anglo-Saxon of Britannia were inept and weren’t forging their own path. Also, for the people that are arguing whether the Normans were French or not, you cannot think in terms of how we do today. There were no nations. There were “peoples” and kings of those peoples. Charles III was the king of the western franks who appeased Rollo and gave him the land that later became Normandy. Norman’s spoke Norman French but are not French. As Belgians do, but they aren’t French either.

The French did conquer the Normans conquered England as the Normans were not French they were Frankish but they weren’t French you might ask then why did they put franks versus Saxons which translates today as French versus English on the bayeux tapestry then. Because one they spoke French and two Franks did not translate as French back then there were no French people technically the French didn’t come into the equation until the first king of the Franks started calling himself king of the French and even then France was very divided ethnically as well as England too. If you went back in time and asked a Burgundian if he was French he would say no I’m Burgundian if you asked him if he was Frankish probably say yes if you asked him if he was a Frank he’d say no the Franks are over there. But that said you might get a Burgundian a noble man who was a frank and identified as a frank. The Normans identified themselves as Normans and saw themselves as Normans but culturally they would say they were Frankish and that is probably why they said Franks not Normans fought Anglo-Saxons.
@catholicracialist776
@catholicracialist776 3 года назад
Yes we know that Franks had germanic D-N-A but by the time of William the Conqueror there were not Franks anymore since they all mixed with the French half Celtic half roman population. Also, the Anglo Saxons at that time were mixed with Celts and not full germanic anymore
@chrishilton3626
@chrishilton3626 3 года назад
@@catholicracialist776 you don’t get it do you franks weren’t just an Germanic race of people who later became gallo-Roman they were a tribe it’s not about ethnicity it’s about identity. What I’m trying to say is you call Them french they called themselves Franks Frank and French didn’t mean exactly the same thing back ten It was starting to by time of the 1066 invasion of England tho But still the Normans would’ve seen themselves as uniquely different to the rest of The Franks they were Norse Franks hence the name Normans and anyway there were no Frenchman and there were no English they were Franks and Anglo-Saxons which today translates to us as me English and you French. PS and they did not and probably would not have identified with earlier Frank’s either pps and yes the invasion force was a mix including a lot of franks from the rest of France but they all identified slightly differently to the rest. PPPS The kingdom of England is actually technically older than the kingdom of France.
