Willie D on New York Rappers Disrespecting the South Early On (Part 1)

In this clip, WIllie D discussed the lack of respect the South has historically received from New York. He talked about Run DMC dissing the South back in 1988 and how it took him a while to realize it and eventually responding to them. Willie D went into how he got serious about rapping and how he felt as though he didn't have a true "Plan B" therefore it was imperative that he made this rap thing work out.

Why the comments so negative ppl. Now pay attention. NY Pioneered Rap. West Coast Brought The Gang Shit. And The South Showed Us Independence. Do you Know what that Means? It Means Black Ppl Across the Country worked together unknowingly. Imagine. What we can do Knowingly. Im just saying.

Edwin Keith listen to Schoolly D - "PSK." That's where Ice-T got the inspiration for "6 n' the Morning." Ice-T was the first gangsta rapper on the West Coast, and he credits Schoolly D (who's from Philly) as being the first gangsta rapper, period. Ice-T: "I was inspired by a guy named Schoolly D. He actually should be noted with the first gangster rhyme, you know, Park Side Killas (PSK)." Check out the documentary on Netflix called "Hip-Hop Evolution." I think it's episode 4: The Birth of Gangsta Rap.

I see u youngins in here arguing about NY hating on the south. But y'all need to know most of NY didn't like anyone unless u were from NY for the most part. Even other east coast cities like Boston, Hartford CT, Baltimore, and even Jersey weren't loved like that. Hell even Long Island which is in New York didn't start to get love until the great Rakim, Public Enemy, Epmd, De La Soul kicked that door down. Guru from Gangstarr who is from Boston had to leave Beantown and go to New York to get on and get his shine. So it wasn't just the south or the west coast it was everyone.

The irony is R&B really opened the door for Southern Hip Hop. LA and Babyface relocated to Atlanta in the early 90's and started LaFace. It was through that circle that OutKast got their shot. Of course Rap A Lot was already doing their thing in Houston. But LA and Babyface were huge at that time. And their clout behind OutKast and the Dungeon Family really pushed them (and the Southern sound) into the mainstream.

earthall79, not sure about Erick Sermon. But I know the LaFace Christmas album featured "Player's Ball" as a last minute add in track. And it ended up putting Outkast on the map. Prior to that Christmas album LA Reid wasn't really feeling Outkast. But that track was the one that blew up off that album. That's when he gave them the green light to record a full album.

Ronald Neal TBF, Flórida was considered it’s own thing...I’ve been into HipHop since the late ‘70s só I was deep into NYC first....2 things changed that : First, my best friend, who was from Indiana, introduced to me to WC HipHop, and the Geto Boyz... Second, I went to School in Tampa. So, for the young ones who don’t know, my first exposure to Bass wasn’t Luke....my man was DJ Magic Mike - Drop that Bass! - Out of Orlando, and I was hooked! I was actually struck by how much all of the music’s base form sounded like “Planet Rock”. My main point is that when most people - that I know - talk about Southern HipHop, they’re talking about everywhere down there EXCEPT Florida. Florida was always considered where “Bass music comes from”, like how Chi-Town was House music Central until Common Sense (his OG name) came along. So when I talk about Southern HipHop, I’m not referring to Florida - it gets its own respect.

I'm from California & yes the anamosity was there from some New Yorkers towards rappers from other regions but Run-DMC wasnt attacking the south in that line from Run's House. That's stupid!!! Anyone especially from New York that came up in the 1980's or 1990's and even long before that can tell u if a dude was hiding out from the law, people who were after him or looking for him whatever reason often times cats would slide down south til things cooled off. So say somebody killed someone in New York, they may hide out with extended family in Virginia, North or South Carolina, Florida, Georgia or wherever or someone stole dope or fucked up real bad like, snitched, owed someone a lot of money or was on the run or felt his life was in jeopardy for whatever reason he would hide out in the south. So what Run DMC was saying was that the "sucka M.C." they were speaking about needed to hide out down south. People trump up too much bullshit on the internet nowadays just recklessly starting shit for nothing!

The good thing is you have J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar. The difference between now and back then is, others may have sold more records than Rakim and KRS1 like MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice but, the KRS and the Rakim types with messages in there lyrics were still hands down the best....we didnt know or care about album sales back then....if you were dope, you were dope and the streets dictated whether you had the crown not corporations. Females may have had a hand in destroying and delegitimizing bars and conscious content. They just wanna dance and women outnumber men...and let's face it..rappers rather rap to women and the perks extend way beyond money. LOL P.E. was number one in Hip Hop and they just died off and there hasn't been a popular mainstream king of rap group like that since.

That's most southerners mindset but being from the south we always had to fight harder whether it was economics or racism. But the south is very popular now and it started in the late 90s .

The southern rappers with the exception of OutKast and the entire Dungeon Family/Goodie is what paved the way for the nonsensical, nursery rhyme, style of hip-hop which is so prevalent today.
