Thanks to a fellow collector for requesting this rare footage featuring the great Light Heavyweight Champion (1963-65) Willie Pastrano. Trained by Angelo Dundee, at his best Pastrano resembled both Muhammad Ali and Willie Pep. He was a glamorous, fast, resourceful and defensive boxer, who made up for his lack of KO power with constant movement. Here is the original BBC broadcast of Pastrano's title defense against former Commonwealth (British Empire) middleweight champion, Terry Downes.

willie was a master boxer that even though he was on the move he was steadily jabbing and engaging his opponents. never in a dull fight cause he was always putting in work. young fighters take note. peace n smoke.

I saw this fight in the Kings Hall and thought Downs was on the way to win the contest in the 10th round but Pastrano came out in the 11th round like a new man and finished the fight off, I often wonder why he took so long?.

I see a lot of Willie Pep's moves in Pastrano's style. This was Terry Downes' last fight - he had previously held the World Middleweight Title.

Yep you can see the resemblance in style. He help get ali ready for the first fight with sonny liston in miami beach flordia, 1964. Willie pastrano the original dancing master.

Downes already past his best made a good effort but as you can see from the film he looks what he was. A smallish middleweight against a big light-heavyweight.

A tall order for Terry Downes; he was well past his best and this was his last fight.. A natural middleweight against an excellent boxer who had often fought at heavyweight.

Teryy was actually a natural welterweight.. he got pumped up because we already hada top welter in the uk and in the same stable.

Downes was a good crowding. fit middleweight and even a world champ. But never a light-heavy. Did well for himself and built a chain of bookmakers from his ring earnings. RIP.

Terry was a good middleweight, but his management must have hated him. Dick Tiger, Pastrano. Man, both guys had good post-boxing careers, with both appearing in movies. Rip to both men.

I watched this fight at the time. Those highlights don’t do Downes justice. After 10 rounds he was doing a number on Pastrano and well on top. Then between the 10th and 11th round Angelo Dundee absolutely berated Pastrano filling the air with expletives which were heard on TV. It obviously had the desired effect because Willie came out rejuvenated and stopped Terry.
