@@edmundpower1250 Stephen Hendry is not a particularly nice sportsman I don't think, despite being an excellent snooker player. I find him to be very arrogant, which sadly can be a trait of some great sportspeople. I find the same with Ronnie too.
@@philiphalanen1025 Arrogance...because Stephen Hendry proved his quality time and time again. When he was in the groove he KNEW he would win, I say it's confidence
Thank you for being there for us all during the pandemic. Your videos kept me, and I'm sure many others, going, kept our spirits reasonably high, gave us something to look forward to, and that will never be forgotten!
Seventeen year old making his debut at the Crucible, and Hendry just performed as if he didn't see what all the fuss was about. Even then we knew he was going to something special
The applauding and the interview at the end of the match just shows how much Willie respected Stephen as a player, and how much of a gentleman Willie is as a player. This was a joy to watch. We all know where Stephen went after this.
I remember watching this at the time. Thorne's appreciation of Hendry was much remarked on. It was the first time I'd seen Hendry after reading so much about him.
Interesting how there is no real insightful commentary back then, real expert shot by shot information. No miss rule as well is quite something. AND I never before realised Hendry was from Broxburn!?
Always liked willie thorne, he would always joke with the audience and was one of the few attacking players of snooker, if a shot was only 50-50 he would go for the pot. Plus he was only 32 here and looks 50, shows how times have changed, RIP
Lol, blatant miss by Thorne early in the first frame and not a peep out of John Williams. I guess misses weren't called in snooker back in the 80's.. 🤔
Even then you could tell hendry had something special 'a record that's yet to be beat 'and if hadn't retired maybe his record would never be beaten but he said he was bored with it all and quit
Great video. Willie Thorne was one hell of a player back in the day (better than some, including myself, give him credit for). He potted some crackers here - but he did miss a few suspect shots - and this is maybe why he didn’t win as much as perhaps he should have? Also Hendry’s safety was decent for a 17 year old. I always thought of him as a potting machine, but obviously all the knowledge of angles is good for safety too
You’re amazing! So much better than the BBC’s lazy arse repeats of Crucible Classics. Where are you getting all these from? Please say you have all 4 sessions from the ‘85 final.
Jimmy White v Willie Thorne B&H Irish masters 1986 I think. White potted a red up the side rail into the yellow picket and he was at near right angles to it. Probably nostalgia but would love to know how to track White down from his pomp in the 80s.
Can I ask what the feeling was at the time regarding Willie Thorne being fancied for the title? Certainly he was a very capable player but from looking at the 85-86 season leading up to Sheffield I'd say the in form players were Steve Davis, Terry Griffiths, Jimmy White and Cliff Thorburn. Willie had never progressed beyond the QF stages so I'm curious of the presenters comments at that time. I ask this with the utmost respect to the player.
Willie Thorne was a good player to watch but unfortunately lacked the bottle and mental strength of someone like Steve Davis, the ability to close matches out.
REQUEST PLEASE: 1989 Crucible world semi-final, Steve Davis vs Stephen Hendry, the only semi-final I‘ve ever missed on TV. I can’t find it anywhere on RU-vid (only they have is the 1994 world semi-final which Hendry won 16-9 against Davis)
REQUEST PLEASE: 1991 Crucible Final, session 1 John Parrott vs Jimmy White, the only final I‘ve ever missed on TV. JP claims this is the best he ever played, and I’d love to,see this session. I can’t find it anywhere on RU-vid. Cheers and stay safe!
stog33, the correct time code is 5:00, where Thorne pots TWO reds. That was legal? Is it still legal? Do players avoid it because it means there’s one fewer black possible?
@@johnsrabe yeah it's a legal shot, it's not something that is usually done on purpose but can happen, player gets two points (one for each red) you are correct it does mean there is one fewer black available to pot as a result
The amount of coughing in the audience is ridiculous. I can only think it's because so many people smoked back then. The Crucible holds less than 1000 people but you can still hardly go 1 second without hearing a cough.
Not sure when it happened, but they reinforced the floor at some point. There used to be stilts under the floor to give the tables support, without them it was discovered the tables soon began to roll off.
@@mjt_snooker1704 My guess is somewhere during the 90s because I remember watching these matches with my grandad (89/90 to be precise). I'm not surprised they needed stilts, I would've been concerned if they hadn't.
He was unlucky with the red hitting the yellow after 44 break ...and the brush on the pink could of been kinder? He got the slaphead next year and only lose to the eventual winner 13-12...the rest is history!!
Willie Thorne could of been so much better, but his head must of been cabbaged most of the time, through being a mad gambler, with fine margins of snooker, earlier losses in the day probably weighed heavily on his mind at times.
I couldn't be a snooker player I ain't got the patience 'if I had a choice I would rather be a good f1 driver 'and make millions instead of a few quid 'Lewis Hamilton is gonna get 50 million this year now that's more like it '50 million it would take the normal guy about 25 life times to even come close
@@anton5479 Willie and his Mrs are on RU-vid on the 'This Morning' show blubbering about his gambling addiction with Amanda Holden and the mincing, fudge packing, clay puncher, fairy nonce Philip Schofield lol 💃👠👜🥒💦
Thorne , realising he was up against a better player , trying all the tricks to unsettle hendry . Hovering around the table after he'd played his shot etc
Legend !? I'm guessing you're from Leicester ? And actually I wasn't being disrespectful to Willie , he played within the rules and used his experience to beat a very young , but obviously even then , very good opponent . Don't be so quick to be offended
