Religion and ritual were present in all activities of the Andean people. Besides worshiping their gods, they also worshiped sacred places which they called Huacas. These Huacas were located throughout the Inca empire -- mountain tops, caves, rivers and springs. Also, as their knowledge and interpretation of the cosmos allowed, the Andean people considered the Milky Way a celestial river and therefore sacred. For thousands of years it was the source of many of their myths and legends.
