Fun fact: The morphing effect was created specifically for the animal transformation sequence of this movie. After Willow, it was a very popular computer special effect for a while. Very cool that _Willow_ is finding new appreciation in recent years. Watching it today, you can see how easily Ron Howard (of all directors) could've adapted _LOTR_ at any time. He creates an impressively immersive & grand scale fantasy reality. _"WILLOW cost $35 million...and it's made alot of that back"_ - Warwick Davis in 2013's Ricky Gervais produced BBC2 comedy _Life's Too Short_ A hilarious show, Davis plays a fictionalized version of himself as the "struggling has-been star of _Willow"._ Val Kilmer & Liam Neeson cameo. Can't believe after all these years people are reviewing it. I was a film extra on this movie in 1987. Two weeks in Airk's Army, two scenes - crossroads, and a large ambush battle scene at the top end of lake Wakatipu in Queenstown, New Zealand. I read George Lucas cut it from the film. The crossroad scene I recall the cages hatch on the bottom had broken open and Val fell spraining his ankle. That land is now housing! I was in full uniform with a real double bladed metal battle axe. The week before I had a fiberglass painted metallic sword and hard plastic brown painted shield. Great fun! The snow escape on the sled and the snow ball rolling downhill was Cadorna ski field near the township of Queenstown which is a common tourist destination. Val & Joanne Whalley (Sorsha) had a secret relationship while filming in Queenstown I heard. We weren't allowed film camera's but some of the horse riders were taking photos which I managed to get quite a few off afterwards. Still have some of the uniform. I heard they were from Italy. Though there wasn't enough gear for all extras so they filled in gaps behind those with full uniforms and wore just a black suit! Cheers for the review glad you enjoyed the film Mary 🙂

In D&D parlance, Kilmer's character is a "rogue." His talents are charisma and agility, so manipulating people and sword-fighting are his greatest abilities. "Peck" is a derogatory term, in the film world, for the Nelwyns. The Brownie is wearing the mouse-pelt in the same way a human might wear a wolf-skin. It's a trophy from a hunt.

I got completely immersed in this film at the ages of 8-10. Constant VHS rewind and play. 39 today, and I still consider it The high watermark of what a fantasy movie ought to be. this was a real fun movie when I first saw it for sure. Was just old enough to be reading fantasy books and looking for movies on the subject as well. One small detail I liked was this was the first time the human group wasn't simply referred to as human or 'man'. Which if different humanoid species coexisted, it would make sense they would have different names or nicknames for each other.

And the reason Fin Raziel was older was because the Australian possum only has a lifespan of 13 years in the wild, so time passed ~6* faster. So if Fin was cursed at the age of 20 and spent 10 years on the island, she would be physically 80. But notice her first words to Willow, "We have work to do"

I love this movie. I was 17 when this one was made. There was so much that was great; the acting, the directing, the beautiful music composed by the late James Horner. There was actually a book as well and it fleshes out the characters a little more as well as giving Madmartigan's back story. And, if you loved Willow, look for the 1982 film Krull. It is a blend of Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Krull is the name of the planet the film is set on. And I love your comments about the special effects. If you want to see an older movie where the effects still hold up today for the most part, look for the 1974 film The Towering Inferno, one of the granddaddies of all disaster movies. And it has my favorite actor, Steve McQueen, as a Battalion Chief in the San Francisco Fire Department.
