In this Screen Tests interview, Willow Smith reflects on that time Bruce Springsteen covered her most famous single, “Whip My Hair,” Edward Scissorhands, Avatar, and her pink mohawk.
Transcript
The first time I performed I went on the Ellen Show,
and it was the craziest experience of my entire life.
I was so nervous, and my mom was like,
you've been practicing so much, like you can do this,
and I was like, oh my gosh, do I have to do it more times?
And they're like, No, you killed it the first time.
Yeah, I was doing Whip My Hair.
I think I was nine.
I wanted to sing when I was really young,
and I kept on telling my parents and they kept on
telling me, you know, okay we can get some writers here
like we can get some producers if you really want this to
be real, and I was like, I want it to be real.
They got all of those people, we sat in a room
and I just was talking, talking, talking about the things
that I loved, and the writers just came up with that song,
and I was like so down to sing it, and so I did.
So glad it happened, because if it didn't, I wouldn't be
the person I am today.
I did see the Bruce Springsteen cover of Whip My Hair,
it was so freaking amazing, my parents woke me up,
and was like Willow, like you have to come watch this,
like this is the craziest thing
and and I was like, oh my gosh, like I can't believe
such iconic people like my songs.
The first movie, the first one that made a big impression
on me, Edward Scissorhands.
I just liked the aesthetic of the movie, so pale and like
pristine, and then you go up to the house and it's like dark
and decrepit.
I don't know, I just liked the contrast between those two
worlds.
My favorite love scene, in a movie? Hmm
Avatar, when they are at the tree of souls, and they are
communing with Eywa, it's my favorite.
I had a mohawk, pink.
No, because it wasn't really tall, it was like, I shaved my
entire head and then it grew back a little bit, and then I
shaved the sides and it was kind of like an afro mohawk
a little bit, but it was cute.
I was in my bathroom like yesterday and saw some safety pins
on the counter and was just like, let me stab a dread
really quick, and stabbed the dread, and was like
Woah, this is dope.
