If he extended that downwind leg better around :40 he wouldn't have needed to go left over the pond and fences etc. to bleed off more altitude. That area is full of hurt and could have went very bad. Looks like he was hyper focused on spot landing near that cone and affected his judgement. Important thing is he landed safely and hopefully learned something.
I agree that it was a poor approach, as the pilot had way too much height and burned it off flying close to a tree and passing low over a fence. If he would have flown a better landing approach this maneuver would not have been necessary. with a less agile glider it might have been dangerous
