The epitome of an under-rated artist who did have a loyal audience. Willy DeVille was a Giant rocker, capital G, a great gypsy look, great vocals in a Phil Lynott tradition yet DeVille was his own man, great live show. "Storybook Love" was excellent too. Willy & Robert Hazard must have taken the rock & roll fire with them when they left. I haven't heard much since that gives off sparks like this. Awesome? Elvis Presley would've been proud of Willy DeVille -- that's for sure.

I grew up in the same town as Willie and used to watch his high school band when he was Bill Borsey. We all knew he'd be a star. In 1973, I was in a bar in Ridgefield CT with a friend and nothing was happening until the band came on, the original Mink DeVille. We were the only people in the bar dancing and hooting so they sat with us during break. I had several sheets of blotter acid so we all did one and the band came home with us. The house I lived in bordered a 100 acre swamp and that pleased him. We would walk on the swampy trails tripping and they thought I was a witch. They stayed a week and I went with them back to Stamford CT our home town and to Suzie his wife and baby Sean. We had so much fun! Suzie had connections for methadone and heroin and we would do that and go to CBGBs and dance like maniacs until we passed out. He was trying to get her off heroin in those days and I think she won and he started using too. Me too. Recreationally. I stopped snorting it when I stopped seeing them, This fun went on for about six months, they weren't well known yet and then they went to Europe and it was wonderful, smashing for them, the people loved them and I never saw them again. Suzie was great fun. Later known as Toots. I was still into acid rock then and didn't realize how lucky I was to hang out with them in the early days. Right after they left SF. Ruben and Manfred were with then then and I often wonder what became of them.
