In this video I am going to reline a set of emergency brake shoes. I have a couple bendix shoes cleaned up and in epoxy primer and today I will rivet the new material to them.
If you need any type of rivets or equipment check out the following company, they always have everything I need.

This country could use more people like you. Honest, knowledgeable, willing to learn worthwhile skills, and willing to share your knowledge. People like you are one of the good things in life. Your videos are worth watching. I wish you and your wife all the best.

Sadly, people like me that work with their hands and have skills , are becoming like dinosaurs. Very few people care or want to learn what has taken me a lifetime to master. I have been at this for many years and sadly there isn't anyone interested in taking over the trade, so it will die with me when I retire. Wish it could be different but the facts are the facts. Thanks for watching and your well thought out comment. Brian

Brian, with my CJ2A and other old Jeeps I appreciate your videos. This time I was searching for a video on how to reline the obsolete style brake shoes of my 1950's travel trailer. No one sells replacements. Your video popped up. I thought you'd like to know that your video has more useful information for my trailer project than any other that popped up. It also motivates me to reline my CJ2A emergency brake shoes.

That rivet machine is handy if a guy was doing a bunch of shoes. Thanks for the tutorial.

There is a company who charges $200 for a set of shoes with slightly thicker linings to allow a rear rotor/drum with slightly larger ID and I can't believe other companies haven't jumped on bonding thicker linings on to cheap shoe frames. Going to try and find a company to install thicker linings on some shoes I have. Clean job!

Hello Jack, as always, good to hear from you. I expect good things from these linings, lots of testing and trials to get to this point and I think they will work great and last a long time.

Hey friend. Thank you for posting this video - I have come into an old Baker FJF-060 forklift that I suspect needs some brake work. If I can figure out how to get to the shoes, this info will be invaluable. Also McMaster Carr sells some friction material which may help people find what they need! Thanks again, C

Great idea using a forstner bit. Put one on order. Brake linings and rivets too. Same problem with oil leaking onto the shoes. Can't seem to get the seals out. Thanks for your video. It helped me a lot !!

They look nice, good to see you using rivets rather than the bonded linings, I have seen a couple of factory bonded linings come off and rotate around locking the brake up, when there is any risk of oil contamination I rivet.
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 5 лет назад
I always use rivets, as I have had the same experience with factory bonded linings. When a set comes in with bonded linings I add rivets just to be sure I won't have any trouble when driving.

Apprentice mechanics used have to reline shoes and clutch discs as part of the training. They used waterglass between lining and shoe in addition to rivets. I think it was to try keep water out of the join.

Question...would it be easier and better to just order a longer length were you can attach clamps at each end then use a glue of some sort and then do a jig to pull the material sooper tight on to the curve surface. This would eliminate tye rivets...
@bugnfront
@bugnfront 5 лет назад
My thought is the rivets give some amount of needed movement...? where glue wouod not?

Bonded shoes often come loose and will cause trouble. Riveted linings are what I like to use, never had any trouble with them.
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 5 лет назад
Rivet hole is exact where the rivet goes thru, no movement at all during use.

Interesting to see how those are made...or should I say remade. Why not go the bonded route? It seems you would get more use out of bonded because the rivets wouldn't interfere and you would have longer wear. And what type bonding glue would be used if you did bond them?
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 5 лет назад
Bonded linings never seem to last, have had trouble with factory bonded shoes in the past. The bonding just doesn't seem to be able to last as long as rivets. just my own experience.
@petershaw1705
@petershaw1705 2 года назад
I was a brake bonder for 49 years I never had a problem with linings coming off they work better because there is no rivet holes there is more lining area contact with the drum and there is less vibration and squeal
@EcoGreensFarm
@EcoGreensFarm Год назад
@@petershaw1705 bonded with rivets is the way. Bonding on many of my vintage vehicles shoes have failed due to moisture and rust.

Is it advisable to have liners riveted at a shop? I like doing my own work, but this wouldn't be very often. Can you recommend a rivet tool that you could mount in a vise or otherwise?

motorcycle brake shoe material will be much different than the emergency brake material I am using here. Make sure you pick the right material for safety. I will try to dig up the name of the lining material I used when I get into the shop today. Brian

Hi! I have a 64 Ford Galaxie 500 and I have the NOS linings already counter sunk and the original 4/4 rivet. I just don't know what tool to buy. This will probably be a one time deal so all I need is a cheap little tool that I can maybe clamp on my vice. Can you shed any light? Thanks!
@metalshaperJeep

Just buy the proper tubular rivet set. Then take something as large as the head of the rivet and you have a set that you can use with your vice and a hammer
