Hey David, what year was this? Was Crusher with Wilson in 1967? There is a 1967 performance of Funky Broadway with the same drummer because he is playing traditional grip with his left hand.
@davidpanzer6746
@davidpanzer6746 Год назад
@@plungerrecords1270 This was 1995. I don't know for sure but Crusher could very well have been in the earlier one you saw. The trumpet player/bandleader Curtis Pope was definitely in the one from the 60s. He was with him a long time!

Fairly sure the '67 drummer with "Wicked Pickett" in available videos from that period was Elbert "Woody" Woodson, alive today, check "Drummerszone" for info. All of the few of us remaining "ole school" drummers played with a supinated left hand on the snare! No more! (@@plungerrecords1270

Wilson Pickett could have easily been preaching on Sunday morning in a good old southern baptist church. Every time I view a 😀Wicked Wilson Pickett clip, reminds me of church and gospel music.

Never saw it before. I recognize all the guys except that white boy on the Telecaster 😸. Thank you for posting this and I can't wait to see the others. Those were all great players and great friends. All from DC except the drummer, Crusher Green from NYC RIP. He was a force of nature. Kept a solid pocket for two straight hours without the slightest deviation from the tempo - a human metronome! When you met him you immediately knew he was from New York. He had that tough street attitude and it took a while for him to warm up to new people. Once he did, he was a loyal friend for life! Also, he would read the NYT cover to cover every day (but didn't want everyone to know that - bad for the "image" lol) . He died around 2003 from some kind of cancer that just came out of nowhere! The Bass player, Gail Parrish, was from Baltimore. She had never played bass with any other band except WP. She was a natural. She was also one of the funniest people I've ever met. We spent many hours just cracking each other up. The other guitar player is Ronnie Hinton, one of my all time best friends and favorite guitar players. He was by far the most humble guy I ever met and he and I were sightseeing buddies in all those beautiful cities and countrysides we had the pleasure to travel to during my 5 years with WP. Sadly he died from unknown causes about 3 years ago 🥺.

Johnny Long is a great sax player from DC. He was always ready to wail! Played with him in a few bands including the great Jimi Smooth. Curtis Pope is one of the best trumpet players in the world. He was Wilson Pickett's band leader since the 60s. He also played on records by Isaac Hayes and the Isley Brothers (It's Your Thing) along with his long time buddy the late great Skip Pitts. Skip was the best and most innovative guitar players in R&B music. He should be a household name. He went on the road with Gene Chandler when he was still a teenager. He came up with the funky lines in It's Your Thing but he's best known for inventing the wah wah guitar in Isaac Hayes Shaft. I would go see him whenever he was home in DC and TRY to copy what he was doing. Anyway, Skip and Curtis were with WP for many years. Curtis also had a great band called the Midnight Movers. I played gigs with them once in a while. So in 1995 when Isaac Hayes called Skip to leave the Pickett band and come back with him, Curtis needed someone to cover the position. Out of the dozens and dozens of fantastic funky soulful guitar players around DC, he for some reason called me. I'm forever grateful for that! Artie Sherman is a great jazz organ player in the mold of Jack McDuff and Jimmy Smith. He was a fixture on the DC circuit and played with the Midnight Movers. Whenever I got a chance I would play small trio jazz gigs with him and it was always fun and educational. Last but definitely not least is my great friend David Akers on trumpet. As good as he was on the horn, he was an amazing singer who could go from Louis Armstrong to Prince to James Brown to Dean Martin. And he was a great entertainer who could win over any crowd. He and I went on to co-found the Mustangs Band, one of the best bands out of that area. We played Colleges, weddings, and concerts up and down the East Coast for nearly 20 years. We had 4 of the best singers I have ever known. Besides David there was the late great Skip Mahoney who with his group the Casuals had many hit records, the late Barbara Malone who was the number one soul sister out of DC, the all around master performer Ignatius Mason, and the powerhouse Patricia Amaker who could go from Mavis Staples to AC/DC. We always had at least three phenomenal horn players, sometimes five.

It's VERY unconventional for a drummer to just grind on the ride cymbal like that but it sure is workin!! As Derek (Vice Grip Garage) would say, "...mmm WAY too much.....perfect."

The bass player, the bass player, the bass player! I think it's a woman. She kept that riff going for the whole song. That probably made her fingers hurt.
