20 plus years ago I played with the 6.1 , 4 5/8", Prince Synthetic Gut at 62 lbs, and with Tourna Grip wrap. Greatest frame ever. Yes it will give you Tennis Elbow. My right arm wasn't right for several years after I stopped playing tournaments. In my experience that frame gives you control and the power when you need it. I still have four of them in my bag still but it's been quite some time since I've picked them up. Nice review man.

I don't know about you but all these classic frames are right up my baseline. I've been using various forms of the Slazenger Tim Henman series, from the TW reissued "harlequin" , the Trinity ( black /sliver/gold ), the Xpro 1 and the Quad Flex 305. Kinda sad that Wilson did away with the 95 sq inch head rackets . Love the content, keep it up

I have the RF97 and my old PS95 6.1 from 90s, and to be honest the PS95 is much easier to use than the RF97. Feels lighter and more maneuverable in every way, even though it’s actually overall heavier. I’m always late with the RF97, but never with the PS95, so I’m selling the RF97 because I feel it is inferior and I like a thinner beam.

Awesome breakdown! Thank you so much for answering my request. I love the Pro Staff lineup. I play with a 2014 PS 90. The last 90 Wilson made before Fed switched to the 97. I also have a couple PS 85's I hit with occasionally. You can't beat the feel of either of them. I might check out the PS 97 based on your feedback. Cheers! 🍻👍

Congrats on the channel, glad to see it's doing well. But I will say I'm disappointed you didn't include the best Pro Staff of them all in this video, the 4.2si. And I can say that cause you know I switch back and forth between all 4 (6.0, 6.1, 4.2 and RF97) regularly. That right there should tell you who is posting this ;). Anyway, common man, you know the 4.2 the best of the classics. I can understand not including it since they're impossible to get a hold of but you could've at least mentioned it. Next time I'm in town I'm bringing some up and we're doing an update to this.

My tennis coach back in those days said that its best to used a racquet that's heavy in the handle. Because it give you more control when you're at net. When you're at the baseline you should be able to generate your own power. A light head makes you able to volley with precision when you attack the net.

Very interesting topic. Yup agree with most here. All my RF97 weigh 361 or 362g fully loaded with overgrip and damper. Even the PS85 seems a bit light. Mine weighs 370g !! PS 6.1 Classic is the toughest to play with to me. It's the stiffest and the sweet spot is a bit lower than the other PS. Also too head light. I add 2 pieces of lead weighing 2g each at 3 and 9 o'clock or just above the PWS to make it more playable.

Hello, I had a Pro Staff 6.1si 110 sq. in. (like the first racquet in the video but 110 sq. in.) with 1/2 Kevlar strings, it had enough power (just a little assistance), great control and feel, awesome precision, stability, and gave no arm fatigue. What is the closest racquet/string combo I can find to this? At the moment I am demo-ing racquets, but have a Volkl Organix 8 with natural gut strings and would like more control/spin and slightly less power. I hate the Clash and like the V1 V Feel racquets in general. I know nothing about string tension and just ask for tension in the middle of the recommended range of each racquet. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated! BTW your videos are amazing and I watch them all.

I still have my PS 6.1 Classic, still prefer it to the 2 other version I had. Did not like the Ncode version, too light and powerful and unstable. Spin effect version was also more powerful but more stable. The classic taught the meaning of the word, Plush in hitting a tennis ball. Briefly had a PS 95S, whippy and light but lacked plowthrough and didnt have the plush feel similar to my Classic, sold it quickly to a friend.

I have a theory on why it is what it is. Basically Wilson captured the lightning in a bottle at least twice. But business requires cash flow sustainability. To make a long story shorter, a banker hoarded these for investment and warned Wilson to never compromise automatic renewable loans by doing something fair and democratic like reissuing these rackets with modern quality control.

I've been playing with my Wilson Pro staff classic 6.1 since 1996. I have always used a synthetic gut string strung at 55 lbs. I'd like to continue playing with this racket; however, I noticed that I'm not the same player that I once was and find myself playing harder with this racket. It requires so much effort to hit my forehand and backhand. Any advice would be much appreciated. Hans

For all the love of Pro Staffs, other than the old original 85sq" version, none of them did it for me. I've wanted to like them, I've just never found them to my liking, with the current iteration likely the worst, as its way too stiff and unforgiving. Comparing the most recent version, I'd take a yonex vcore (330) any day. It feels much faster through the air and definitely a softer more forgiving feel. I reckon too many people use them, wanting to be just like their idols. Great marketing right there!! Edit: Oh....to add....tennis elbow from all of them other than the original as they are stiff. It's not the weight, also the sweet spot isn't overly generous, which makes them jarring. I'm not surprised you commented about that. Cheers

I myself use a modified eastern forehand grip (90+ mph). For low balls it is so much easier, you can also lay your wrist back to get added topsin. I find myself gravitating to 16x19 frames under 100" with swing weight around 325-330 to drive through the ball. I used a rf97 for a little over a year or before the weight finally gave my shoulder issues from serving with a 12.7oz frame. There are not too many frames these days in a heavier spec other than the two Tennis Spin recommended. If you like a crisp feeling racquet the Yonex Vcore Pro 97 330 may just do the trick. Most frames I try I have to add a leathergrip and 4 grams at 3&9 to get up to my preferred spec. Good luck, and keep hitting forehands like Del Potro!

Brother, I believe your scale is a bit light in the ass. An RF97 strung is about 357-360g, not 347g. Maybe you picked up the Asia version instead. The 85 had some plow, Sampras played with a 14oz version, but was strong as an ape. I wish you had tested a RF90v4, that racquet was a gift from God. But the 95 was probably the best club-level racquet of all time.

That is highly likely St Vincent. It is like bxq as the q always ends up looking like an o. It codes for one of the last runs of st Vincent's. Just confirm that there is red primer underneath at any cracks or dings and I'm sure it's a St Vincent. Many people change the butt caps so the red primer is important. If the original butt cap is original, the sv5 version also should read 50-60 pounds as recommended tension of the earlier ones are higher.

I don't get it with the rf97. That one should be 340 grams without strings. Only 7 grams for the strings? I would expect 355 grams with strings. Is this Wilson lack of quality control? The only head heavy rackets are the Super light rackets with oversized heads to make sure they have enough plow through (swing weight) and for stability.

Hey Will, I can't really recommend an online store because I'm in the US, but have you checked out the Asics Gel Resolution 8? They make it in a size 6 and I had to go up a half size because they ran a half size too small for me. I've used the Asics Gel Resolution 7 and now I'm using the 8, and they're great! High quality shoe. Locks in my feet but very comfortable. Comes with a 6 month outsole warranty, so if you play a lot, it'll last a long time (or you can have them replaced if you wear through them). Also, my son has had really good luck with the Babolat Propulse Blast.

I know you said don't recommend Tennis Warehouse. I just looked on their Australian website, www.tennisonly.com.au/, and they don't have size 6 in the Asics. Not sure why TW stocks that size in the US but not Aus. Maybe they can work something out? I looked at Rebel Sport and you're right... they barely have any "tennis" tennis shoes. I hope you find some options.

Hey Will, one more suggestion... You may want to check out the top range of kids shoes. I don't know about all shoe manufacturers, but Asics kid's shoe sizes and men's shoe sizes line up from bottom to top. Meaning a size 6 in kid's and a size 6 in men's are the same size. I would probably check directly with each shoe manufacturer to be sure that's correct, but that may open up some options for you. AND... sometimes kid's shoe sizes have the same technology for almost half the price. Bonus!

These are all frames for advanced players and well beyond the ability of weekend warriors.

I disagree. Sometimes, it just comes down to what a player is used to and their playing style.

i agree, the normal Pro Staff 97 was a decent frame, the countervail version turned it into a underpowered stick with no feel or touch. Hopefully a new one with FeelFlex is released sooner than later.

I am currently playing with a Wilson classic pro staff (stretch) 6.1 and have had this racket since 1996. I recently purchased a Wilson Clash and love how it plays. I love them both!

I'm still rockin my 6.1 stretch as well... this Racket took me through highschool varsity tennis in the late 90s-early 2000s.. have been scared to replace it because of how much I love the extra control I feel like I get on this racket..
