Wilt was bigger than Basketball. The NBA wasn't ready for a superstar like Wilt yet. Same with Kareem. NBA didn't get their act together until 1980 when they finally started airing all the regular season games. In Wilt's prime they didn't even Broadcast all the NBA Finals games. Could you imagine today if they only showed 3 games of a best of 7 Finals series on TV? If I lived back then I'd have to physically go to each game if I wanted to see the games. Magic and Bird w/ ESPN Ushered in the modern NBA. Wilt was born to early for his own good.

People don't realize Mr. Chamberlain dominated with finesse...he wasn't slanging folks around or committing offensive fouls by driving his shoulder into you before he went up. I have to laugh when I hear people say that Shaq was the most dominant big man ever. The fact is that Wilt was a legitamate 7'1" who could do it all while Shaq was and is 6'10" at the very most - an overly hyped, self promoting legend in his own mind. The NBA has gotten like the fake wrestlers with all the phony heights, players adding 2 to 3 inches to their heights is common. Shaq had NO finesse, could not score unless he offensive fouled, bashed into players and dunked. He basically assaulted other players and should have been thrown out of half the games he played. He was a mediocre rebounder and hardly ever blocked a shot. Yoa Ming made Shaq look powerless and pathetic. Wilt Chamberlain was a great athlete. Shaq was extremely limited and was basically a human battering ram that the refs let get away with murder. If I was a ref, he would have fouled out every game before halftime.

Wilt averaging the 10-12 blox, 50 points, 25 boards, and having at a weaker state getting 8.6 assists for a season is nothing short of phenomenal. Put his speed in the era today, teach him to shoot a higher arcing fadeaway 3 so he can reach the paint before it lands in case he misses, and give him the equipment that is here today. 1.) You’d have a guy averaging 48mpg because he played 45 at a higher pace, getting the same/greater amount of boards because he is one of only 5 players that consistently rebounded their own shots. 2.) scoring 70 ppg with the amount of shot attempts he could make. 3.) 15 blox because of his agility. 4.) 5 steals with those 7’8 arms against the clumsy ass 7 footers today. 5.) 11 or more assists if you have another guy who could score 10+ points on his team. All of this in a guy faster than lebron and flying higher than Jordan, stronger than Shaq, Darryl Dawkins, B Wallace, Steven Adams or anyone else. And he’s not a pussy, he is a king of controversy. Id argue that Wilt has way more 3x2s than Oscar or Westbrook, and easily the most 4x2s. And he could do that today. He was born too early and is merely a myth nowadays.
@mikebrown2367
@mikebrown2367 2 года назад
I don't think Wilt had a higher vertical than Jordan but I sincerely believe he could snatch a quarter off the top of the backboard in his youth . I saw a picture of a young Wilt in college pinning the ball at the very top of the backboard on a block . It looks like he could of reached ABOVE the backboard , the clips of him high jumping are crazy as well. There is also a clip of him on a standing vertical catching a shot at the top of the backboard in college which is CRAZY . I think Wilt's vertical in his athletic prime was 44-46 inches . There is a news article dating back to 1959 where it states Wilt had a max reach of 13'3 with a standing reach of 9'6 while flat footed . Which translates to a 45 inch vertical . The article may be a bit off , meaning that Wilt's vertical was roughly that , but who knows . I want to say finally that Wilt had crazy hang time for sure but didn't display it because of how tall he was . He stood 7'1 and a 1/16th barefoot with a 7'8 wingspan and a 9'6 standing reach without shoes. He was a center playing with his back to the basket , he didn't need to call on every drop of athleticism he had within him to dunk the ball , shoot fadeaways and dominate the post .

They said that Wilt only scored a lot because he's playing with a bunch of 6'9 centers. But his playstyle isn't like Shaq where he bullies everyone inside the paint. Wilt never like contact because he don't want people to see him as a brute. Instead he played with finesse. And as we can see, it didn't matter if he's up against guys shorter than him. A lot of this plays like the fadeaway would still be hard to stop even to this day by modern bigmen.

I wonder how much Wilt could lift in the weight room when he was in College at Kansas in the mid-late 1950's. There is a clip of him and 2 other players in a game in college fighting for the ball in the post and he hooks arms with one of the players and literally lifts him off the ground and swings him through the air to the side like nothing with ONE arm. He was probably 250ish at the time. Wilt stood 7'1 and a 1/16th in his bare feet and was 327 pounds of pure fucking muscle at his heaviest weight ever recorded by the way. An absolute behemoth of a man. Truly worthy of the nickname "Goliath"

I would like to correct one of the statements about Wilt dunking from the freethrow line in Hoch Auditorium. I grew up in Lawrence and watched Allen Fieldhouse being built. I also remember seeing Clyde Lovellette play in Hoch Auditorium. It was, as stated, a pretty poor venue for college basketball. Allen Fieldhouse was sometimes called "The House that Wilt Built." It was finished in time for his freshman season at the University of Kansas, so he never had to play at Hoch. I watched Chamberlain and the freshman team defeat the varsity squad in Allen Fieldhouse for the first and only time ever. That game was pretty amazing.

Ultimately wilt Chamberlain's legacy was astounding, he played against the greatest created NBA super team of probably any era in basketball history and beat them twice and came within 9 points of beating them four more times! ( they didn't pay Bill Russell a 100,001 dollars a year because of his failures.) Just who else in that era managed with almost forgotten physical effort both in offense and defence managed that! (They payed wilt chamberlain $100,000 because, he with almost superhuman efforts nearly defeated the great celtics six times.) Let's remember a similar team with Larry Bird stopped MJ in his early career, so denying that wilt was a high achiever because he only won twice is tantamount to proving that MJ was only a winner when the best players in the NBA became injured or retired!

Russell averaged 15 pts for his career and never played with less than 4 HOF's and as many as 7. Wilt dominated Russell. The Celts dominated Wilt. With comparable talent Wilty won 2 titles and both teams won more games than any of Russells Celtic teams and both can be arguerd to be the best teams ever. Russell two best seasons were 60 wins,Wilt two best were 68 and 69. Not even close with equal talent.

They talk of Chamberlain destroying the sport of basketball. No sport will ever be "destroyed" if there is a willingness to change the rules and/or the equipment. We'll see what eventually happens in American football. In basketball, they eliminated goal tending, widened the key, and did a few other tweaks. Still, if you were an athletic 5'10" guy in 1951, Chamberlain in a sense _did_ destroy the game.

I saw another RU-vid video where someone asked if Wembanyama was the greatest prospect of all time. Because he stands 7'2" and weighs about 200 lbs and has a long reach and can handle the ball and shoot from distance. Is Wembanyama or Holmgren equal to what Wilt Chamberlain was coming out of high school? No. Not even close. Both are good prospects but just don't have the strength or physical ability that a young Wilt Chamberlain had. Porzingis was supposed to be the next great thing at 7'3" but what has he done? Wilt averaged more his rookie season than Jordan did in his best season and he did it while shooting 58% on free throws and not shooting a single 3 point shot. Some players recently scored 50 points or more in a league with almost no defense and where everyone takes 3 point shots. Wilt averaged 50 points a game when there was no 3 point shots.

Yes the 60's were. Today, with 26 teams, talent is spread much thinner. Russell, for example, was just as fast (or faster) and just as good a leaper. Wilt wasn't even close to the MVP when he scored 50 per game.

I find it hilarious when people condescendingly compare him with modern age giants, conceding him that his game was unstoppable in the old times, but rustic and ineffective for today´s basketball. But if today´s players look "modern" is precisely because there has been a learning process in nutrition, conditioning, but especially offensive resources, like back to the basket moves, face up moves, dribblings, collective offense variants, and so on. All that would ALSO be learnt and enjoyed by Wilt if he were born in this era. You can´t just take him straight from the 60´s and compare his game with the ones of those playing half a century after. If Wilt had that natural advantage in the 60´s, he´d have a similar advantage over his contemporary players in the 10´s or 20´s. The rest would come by itself. Do you think he´d be stuck with the use of the finger-roll? He´d add to his arsenal the post moves learnt from people like Olajuwon and dozens of other talented bigs.
@70sfan
@70sfan 2 года назад
I don't see any reason why Wilt would stop using finger rolls. Back then, finger roll shot from the post wasn't common at all. Centers worked on their hook shots and fundamental footwork. Wilt didn't have a great hook, so he found his own unique signature move. A move that worked in different eras and still would work.
@purpleman1974
@purpleman1974 2 года назад
@@70sfan Yeah, what I really meant was not that he would stop using it, but that he would not get constricted by the kind of tricks he then used. Although, to be honest, finger rolls would lose much of its efficiency in today´s game.
@70sfan
@70sfan 2 года назад
@@purpleman1974 I agree that his post repertoire could be even more developed. That said, I don't see why finger roll would lose its value today. Especially in a hands of someone as gifted as Wilt.

@@70sfan Well, it is a very risky move that involves trying to score with the arm with which you´d usually create space for the shot you´d perform with the other arm. That said, if someone could pull this off today, it would obviously be Wilt...

He was great, maybe the greatest, but back then, it was a lot easier for him, since the NBA was a lot smaller with a lot less talent. Today there is a lot more talent in the league, he would've had a much harder time. That's not to say he wouldn't have been great even in today's NBA, but you simply cannot compare playing against the talent of back then, and nowadays. (For example: he would have had so many less rebounds simply because the rebounds available in a game are far less today, because players hit a lot more of their shots)
@ram0666
@ram0666 2 года назад
The average center in 1965 was 6'10.1 and in 2020 it was 6'10.5. That shoots the size theory down. Today there are 30 teams back then there was 14 so the league is definitely watered down today. Also the rules forced guys to pat the ball while dribbling unlike today how the players turn the ball over. No crossovers if you have to pat the ball. Also they changed the rims to breakaway rims in about 1982 which changed the rims from tight rims to flexable rims that gave the players the shooters roll. Your presumptions about size and talent are just lazy .Also the players of today would average less today than they would have in the late 80's and early 90's. That was a defensive era. So was it harder to play in the late 80's and 90's than today? Numbers may be different but that doesnt make the game harder. I guess how you explain it MJ would score 40 a game today if he averageged 30 for a career in a defensive era. How would they have kept Wilt from scoring 75 a game if they had the spacing back then like they do today with the 3 pt line. Nobody has ever been double and triple teamed like Wilt was to this day.Wilt dominated so much because he did everything. Unguardable in the post and on the boards, ran the floor better than anyone, best passer ever for a big man, best shot blocker ever. Wilt would dominate just as easy if he played against the stiffs that guys pad their stats against today. Between the Lopez twins,Collins twins and 3 Plumlee boys the last 20 years of center play in the NBA was a joke. Could you i9magine Brook Lopez trying to stop Wilt. 40 and 20 every night. No doubt.

@@ram0666 Don't get me wrong. I still think that Wilt was the best player that ever lived. The stories about his strength and leaping ability really tickle my imagination, especially since there is almost no footage of him playing in his early days, and even in his older days, he was the only player EVER to block Karim's skyhook. The only player to play every minute of every game in a season and average 50 point and 25 rebounds on 50% accuracy in that season. I think he would've dominated Shaq.
