I think there is so much confusion around this. How the police should word it is that its public property but this section has restricted access and you shouldn't be here. The police can then escort you from the area. However this only applies if the area is actually deemed restricted. Its open for debate if car parks ect actually are restricted. Same law applies in the states but its much more clearly defined as in America there must be clear signage declaring restricted access especially on public property. Major difference is in the UK Trespass is not a criminal act and by merely standing in a restricted place you cannot be arrested. in the states you get a couple of warnings, one from the property owner and one from the police but you can be arrested if you ignore these warnings. Of course in public property in America you can only be trespassed if you commit a crime regardless of policy.
