Jodi and Nick react to another clip from Would I Lie to You (WILTY). In this clip, Bob claims to have been referred to as the Cockroach King. He is very tough to predict because he makes everything believable and crazy at the same time.

Bob Mortimer was a lawyer that went to a comedy show and got to meet the comedian backstage ( Vick Reeves ) The story goes that Vic soon realised that Bob was a very spontaneous funny, zany guy and before long they had become a double act touring the clubs up & down the country. Their following grew quickly and they were very quickly on tv - Reeves & Mortimer - with their mad, zany, bizarre yet hilarious slapstick style comedy. Not long after that, they were given their own “quiz” show which was a similar format to WILTY in so far as they, Reeves & Mortimer were the hosts, with two panels of 3 celebrity guests who were ridiculed and belittled relentlessly by the hosts… This crazy show was called “Shooting Stars” and enjoyed several successful seasons. It was said that celebs lined up to get on that show…. You hadn’t made it until you’d been humiliated by Reeves & Mortimer 😂

🤣Yep, I remember shooting stars and the smell of Reeves and Mortimer well, they were essential viewing a few years back and seeing how crazy Bob was does make it seem difficult to imagine him being available for legal representation even now that I know it's true as I had to check it out, I couldn't believe it🤣🤣👍

Thanks. I didn't know that's how Bob started. I think Vic is a Marmite comedian; I never took to him - then I didn't watch V & R or Shooting Stars. It's only through reactions like these over the last two years, and some WILTY that I appreciated his inimitable talent. Shoulda broke away sooner, imv. Best wishes to Bob, I hope he is returning to health.

I seem to recall that Bob Mortimer gave up being a lawyer because he hated it. He said that most of his work was as the defence for people who were obviously criminals and also obviously guilty. However so long as they didn't actually tell hin they were guilty he was obliged to defend then. His duty was to do his best for them and he was quite successful at getting people off charges that he believed they were guilty of. It did not sit well with his conscience. He tells a story of getting one guy off on a charge of a knife point mugging only to be subsequently mugged by the guy at knifepoint . The criminal recognised him and said "Oh, it's you Mr Mortimer,, sorry" and lets him go without robbing him. From what I recall from the story Bob was drinking quite heavily at the time to cope with the stress of doing something for a living that troubled his conscience.

Interesting fact about Bob. He was at an event some years ago where Jarvis Cocker of the band Pulp famously invaded the stage during Michael Jackson’s performance. This led to a serious security scare Cocker was held questionably inside a room. Bob like a super hero solicitor (lawyer) stepped in to the breach and de escalated the situation freeing the illegally held Jarvis Cocker and calming the high security.

Talking of Greg Davies, if you’re ever going to watch a British comedy sitcom, please watch The Inbetweeners. It’s about a group of four boys who are in your equivalent of High School, and Greg plays the headmaster (the principal) of the school. It’s very British, very, very funny, very, very rude with lots of swearing, but as teachers, think you will both love it!

There’s quite a few doctors that became comedians in the U.K. too: Harry Hill, Hugh Dennis, Phil Hammond, Simon Brodkin, Graham Chapman of Monty Python, Paul Sinha, Adam Kay and Suman Biswass (although he doesn’t do comedy any more really), Tony Gardner… there’s probably more but except two of those (one deceased, one focused on being a doctor) they are all still professional comedians / comedy actors

Hi Nick & Jodi, a great many British actors and comedians have doctorates, usually from either Oxford or Cambridge. The three that come to mind with medical degrees, are Graham Garden, Graham Chapman, of Monty Python fame, and Harry Hill. The two Grahams qualified as MDs but never practiced, Harry on the other hand spent about ten years as an MD.

At some point I really hope you get round to looking at Greg Davies. He's a good stand up, he's great on Wilty, his appearances on the Graham Norton show are legendary. He is the host of Taskmaster, which you've got to get round to someday. Take a moment and look up the list of competetors on that. Hes als an ex-teacher, and had a very popular series where he played a teacher, with many of the incidents seemibly based on his time as a teacher. Having said all that even if you stop the video and do them one at a time, it would be very worthwhile to work your way through Mortimerian Tales - Bob Mortimer on Would I Lie to You? parts 1 and 2.

I luckily found Bob's autobiography 'And Away...' in hardback in a thrift store for £2($3) and it is a wonderful read, if you can't pick it up physically it surely must be online, he deliberately adds a few far fetched bits occasionally just for fun, and makes it clear that any 'extra' padding is because he simply cannot remember some details and thought it would be fun to just be himself and explain it the WILTY way. Anyway! Great stuff thank you guys!

I don't know if you already have or not, but you should give Miriam Margolyes (pron. Margo- leez) a whirl. Particularly her appearances on the Graham Norton show - a BBC late night talk show. Miriam is one of 'them there lesbetians' and now in her eighties. Upon first sight you would be forgiven for thinking butter wouldn't melt in her mouth - until she opens that mouth and starts recalling events that have happened to her in the past. Miriam is quite a well known figure in Britain having appeared in several TV series' and films, and numerous voice-overs, for instance a few years ago Cadbury's ran an ad campaign for its caramel chocolate bars featuring an animated rabbit. She was the voice behind the rabbit, but you would never have guessed.

Quite a lot of our British comedians had careers in Law, Medicine, or Teaching before taking up comedy. A lot of them were teachers actually (John Cleese, Jim Bowen, Romesh Ranganathan, to name just a few), so if you two ever fancy a career change...😋

Bob brought out his autobiography last year (which I’ve read) and includes most of the stories that he relates and are so always true. I feel sorry that he is working out all of his true stories so will run out of stories for these panel shows. He has had a strange life which we can all rejoice in.

David rescued a bit of the jeopardy with his comments on this one . Bob is well liked and unique in a business where there is plenty of room for individuality . It's not that unusual for comedians to have been qualified as lawyers , doctors , teachers or other professions before taking up comedy , and like Al Murray some use their knowledge in routines .
