glad you credited Matt Lin on this footage! They work hard to give us the best college tennis footage and he deserves to be paid for the use of his footage.
Yes his stuff is great. I messaged him about 1 year ago to see if I could use his videos and he granted me permission. I only use footage from people I’ve personally contacted snd who have given me permission.
This analysis is amazing for a beginner! How much I'll retain is another thing ;) But I figure if I watch these videos a couple of times and play more matches I'll gradually start putting into practise. Thanks so much, great videos!
Great analysis! Moving forward to meet the serve on return is so critical, and keeping balance through contact with the ball makes it tricky; balance is everything right? So lackadaisical coming in for the volley here, that's ok to be there on S&V but c'mon mate get closer to the net! Some solid lessons here to impart into everyone's game no matter their level. Cheers!
I wish I had watched this video before my match today. I lost a few critical points NOT closing off the net by standing at the service line. Thank you so much, Coach Ryan.
You have a gift in explaining and teaching! Thank you! I see you have so many excellent videos and I have hard time finding them from the big pool of videos. Could you add them in playlists for easy search and view? For example, there are only 3 videos in the singles strategy playlist but there are so many more in your channel! I want to watch them all but I get lost sometimes. Thank you!
@@2MinuteTennis thank you! Honestly, I don't know how you're able to cram so much in such short videos! I'm a very impatient guy and short and sweet videos such as yours hold my attention far easily than those long ones you tend to ignore. The feeling is similar to what you get when you hit the sweet spot on your racquet! I'm going to be going through all your videos over this weekend. Yours and that of TENNIS SPIN channel have given me so much value! 🙏🙏. Both of you also have a very soothing voice (perfect for effective coaching).
Just getting big into tennis and I am loving learning the strategy part of the game. Thank you so much for your fantastic videos! You are helping me out so much. I do have one question: why is it important to move toward the serve when returning it? What does that do?
Thank you for sharing the great video. I am over 48 and going for the veteran tournament in Japan. I will try to do the things that are thought in the video!! Thank you once again for the great video.
Thank you for your short, simple and objective videos. It would also be interesting to make some videos on warm-up, stretching, physical preparation, injuries, rest and nutrition, since a player who does tournaments has to eat at different times of the day, depending on what time he plays.
Moving up to the net, to the same side, giving the opponent equal possibilities of a passing shot down to the line or across, I would give away the controll of the game. It would be a more advanced tactic to open him the down line and close the cross side, before he hits the ball, and anticipate his stroke down the line. He may expect you to anticipate, and hit it across any way. Not expecting that you stay at the cross line, and finish easily. Just like soccer goalkeeper at the penalty, they open one side further, to tell the striker you better strike to the larger side, but then the striker thinks, oh, he will anticipate to the larger side, so I better kick to the shorter side, but the GK has a secondary strategy, and anticipates to the shorter side, because that is the side he will easier reach the ball in any case.
hey Ryan thank you so much for this video!!! just a suggestion but if you like could you make a video on the wrist lag/snap if you do have a video on it can someone please send me the link. again thank you so much!!!
Thank you, Ryan. I am a Pickleball player but I am learning from your videos. Could you please share some tips for short people? I am 5'2, or 1.55 m. Much appreciated.
I hope Ryan answers you, but may I suggest something to you in the meantime? I'm shorter than you - I'm in a WHEELCHAIR - and the one thing I've learned after joining The Short Club (I used to be 6 ft.) is TOPSPIN. Learn how to spin your shots so they bend in, especially SERVES. (Wait, do you serve underhand in P-ball?) Honestly, I don't think being short(er) is such a handicap in Pickleball, but you should learn your spins anyway. You can spin a ball in any direction to make the ball curve and bounce differently. I would ask your question on a P-ball channel, however, because I think there are significant differences between our games. Good Luck, sir!
The only thing I dont agree is the approach slice, it wasn’t good. It didn’t move the opponent and was just too high, the ball didnt stay low ( which is the reason you approach with slice). The guy in red could pass that ball 10 out of 10 times lol. The approach didn’t need depth, just to stay lower I think
Agreed. Red has time to step back and hit the ball at a comfortable height. I think that's the key takeaway - what your opponent looks like at contact is an indicator of how good your shot was. If the approach had been a lot faster red would have had to hit on the rise, or if it was lower like you say, red would have to hit up which is much harder.
Me too, I agree! The problem is we call everything 'slice' when they're really two distinct shots: the fast, attacking slice (that stays low) and the slow, floating defensive slice (that resets the point). The latter is what the UCLA guy came in on, when he should have used the former, as you say. Once you learn to anticipate the weird bounce, hitting a heavily-sliced floater is like hitting a base/softball off a tee. Still, it was a nice pass, it just would have made the highlight reel if he had been sprinting for the far corner and hit a banana shot from outside the net post... (Some people are hard to please, eh?)
Ryan, I've heard lesser teachers than you (that's everyone, BTW) say this about staying in tight to the net, i.e. close to the net, but how close? I know it probably varies depending on the point, the opponent, one's feeble and faltering - in other words, AGING - reflexes & eyesight, but could you give us a range? It seems that you (and those lesser guys) want us really, REALLY close! I want to get into my opponent's HEAD, I don't want to be standing inside the guy's SHORTS! Well okay, Rafa's cute and all, I can always make an exception, but you know what I mean? How close is "close to the net"? Should we be able to TOUCH the net with our rackets? One step and touch the net? Give us a hint, as specific as you can make it. Thank you!!
Hey Ryan, big fan of your work and advice keep it up ! I tried the birthday hat technique but i find myself hitting the ball with the frame, do you know what would cause that ? or I should send you a video ! Thanks again
You mean you're framing the ball at the point of contact (POC), yes? But where, at the tip, throat, one side consistently? Sounds to me like you're just misjudging the ball. How many times did you try it, it takes a while to get used to a new technique. May I (humbly) suggest you try shadow swings at a relaxed speed until it doesn't feel awkward and you don't have to think about it. Then *focus on the ball* more when you try real serves and *keep your focus at the POC* after the ball leaves until the service motion brings you down/forward into the court. That last thing (keep looking at the POC) made a *tremendous* difference to my game. You should try to do this on all strokes, groundies, serves, and volleys. When I'm able to do it, my contact is squeaky clean and the ball just JUMPS off my strings, with pace and spin like I've never known before. I _really_ recommend it - but be patient, it's quite difficult to master. Take heart, however, every time you DO do it, it will help. *A lot!* Best of luck to you, my friend.
@@JamesDavisakaRemguy Hey thanks for the answer, you're right, I was framing a the begining but afterwards I started to feel and comprehend how it works but it takes time. I think changing the technique at first and not looking at the POC was the main issue for me but now it's better. I'm still improving my serve but I know I can get there. Thanks again !!!
should have come to the net on the 3rd shot or even 5th shot of the rally when his opponent was off-balance,instead, he came in on the 7th ball off a slower floating ball, coming to the net is best when the opponent doesn't have time to prepare the passing shot...........
You are 100% correct. I even debated talking about it (I’ve mentioned it in recent videos) but decided not to. Can’t include everything in each video or they’d all be hours long. Thanks!!!
