When I was 12 years old (I’m now 65) I built a Heathkit AM/FM portable radio which I still have and use daily. I loved going through the HealthKit catalogs and checking out all the really cool stuff they had.

I broke my back while in the Marines, spent better part of a year in Balboa Naval hospital and eventually recovered. While in the hospital, I built this amp as a gift for my mother; she only had a small kitchen radio at the time. When I got home, I added a FM tuner front end and built a couple of speaker cabinets with my dad's table saw. It was a small gift but special to her. She passed a couple years ago. I think of her whenever I see Heathkit.

My grandfather was an engineer at Heathkit and I grew up surrounded by their equipment. I didn't appreciate what we had until it was gone and only recently, many years later, I've begun building and collecting them myself. If RNJesus favors me there's a home waiting for that AA-1219 on the shelf next to my other kits ;-) Either way, thanks for what you're doing. You've taught me a lot!

Hope whoever gets the amp ,appreciates it ,seems to be a good little amp .I personally have a the mc 2105 (think you did work on one before)and have had some work done to it . I also bought a hafler 200 which was broken , if had your skill would repair it , I also have a few other amps not working ,brother gave me an Akai ,inherited a fisher amp not sure how good it is but is also not working ,it turns on and some lights are working ,no sound .My only HealthKit experience was when I was in early twenties a friend was encouraging me to learn electronics and he bought me the books and circuit boards to experiment on but for some reason it never happened .I still have the books and have recently been studying them but stopped again,maybe someday will be able too put sometime into it .Actually he bought the hafler 200 amp and the preamp ,the 110 model and am using it with the mc2105.I was told the hafler 110 is good sounding but am wondering if I should get a better preamp to match the 2105 ,any thoughts would be appreciated .Take care

I once thought (at 19 years of age) that I could build a Heathkit receiver while sharing a bedroom with a friend in his parents home. I had no tools, test gear, workbench or skills. I asked my brother if he would lend me the money. He turned me down and I’m glad he did. I would have never completed it or would have mucked it up for sure - perhaps both! I ended up with a KLH Model 35 system that I bought with my own monies and loved it. Fond memories…
@FluxCondenser
@FluxCondenser 2 года назад
Yes, that sounds like a “sound” decision not to build the receiver back then given the limitations. The KLH Model 35 system was a great choice. KLH is another brand that’s near and dear to my heart.
@billd9667
@billd9667 2 года назад
The KLH "compact" systems were pretty amazing and a great entry into audiophiliia. When I saw that the 35 included a Dual changer, I was sold. I paid no mind to the speakers, but they were perfect with the 20w amp onboard and could really fill a room. It wasn't until recently that I found out just how beloved the KLH 6 loudspeakers included in the package were. The tuner was also quite good. I miss that unit, but had to give it up when I joined the Navy anyway.

Back in the day I built my first Heathkit - the AR1515 receiver. Still have it and am in the process of re-cap before I start using it again. The timeless brushed aluminum look never goes out of style in my opinion. Would make a great addition to my heathkit audio system.
@MichaelLivingston-me
@MichaelLivingston-me 2 года назад
Those are well designed receivers. If built properly, they have to give the owner a true sense of accomplishment. I think the youth are missing some very practical hands on experience with the demise of these kinds of products. I built a Dynaco Stereo 120 watt amp, and found that enjoyable when I was in my 20's. I already had a Harmon Kardon preamplifier, so I never bought either the PAS or PAT series preamplifiers. That would've been fun too. I'm happy to hear you're still hanging on to the Heathkit receiver.

@FluxCondenser
@FluxCondenser 2 года назад
Great, welcome to the hobby! That Amp Camp Amp is a treat. Soldering tips: Don’t skimp on the heat. Keep the tip very clean. Skip the lead-free solder. Pre-wet the tip with solder. Apply heat on one side of the lead and solder on the other. Let the solder get drawn-in toward the iron tip. Use a mask, blower or fume extractor to keep those fumes out of your lungs. And practice, practice, practice!
@gp4533
@gp4533 2 года назад
@@FluxCondenser Need to remind me of that more often, indeed! I'm always afraid to roast the pcb when the solder on the other side of the ring isn't melting... guess I need that practice you mentioned.
@FluxCondenser
@FluxCondenser 2 года назад
@@gp4533 Well, and that’s the thing about making sure you have enough heat. I think some people go too low with the heat fearing they’ll damage the board, but I find it’s better to go a bit higher so you get a real fast melt time and a speedy flow. That way the dwell time is less and you can get in and out quickly leaving a nice shiny weld. If the melt time seems slow or the flow isn’t immediate, that’s a sure sign that the temp is too low.

I just built a Heathkit 60MHz Triple Trace Oscilloscope. I always hit estate sales looking for unbuilt Heathkit kits.

This is great. The boards look like epoxy instead of cheaper type boards. You did a nice job on the build.

Thanks, Michael. Yes, I agree. I was impressed with the boards and all the other elements of the kit as well.

Great job on the building of this. You did a great job, as I am very picky on build quality. Bought it from your winner on ebay with all of the paperwork. Had an issue with the front panel switches when it arrived as they were jammed - a little dexoit took care of this. Great little amp have it in my shack/lab 73 W4MAY

That really is a good looking little amp and I'm sure that it sounds as good as it looks. When I was younger my told me about the Heathkit that he had and ever since I have had a curiosity / interest in the whole build your own amp kit idea. I just wish that them kits would have still been available in the 90s, the only thing that I ever had that was kinda similar was one of them science fair project type kits where you can wire up different kinds of circuits.

Yeah, growing up in the 90s you just missed the end of the great kit-building era. I was at the tail-end myself as a teenager in the 80s, but I was fortunate to have the opportunity to build something more interesting than Radio Shack’s Science Fair kits from time to time. Although, I have great memories of those as well, and I really learned most of my rudimentary electronic knowledge from Science Fair kits.

Many years back (When I worked at a Chevy Dealership) I knew someone that put 3 new GM Ignition Modules into a Distributor and none of them would work. He went next door to an Auto Parts Store and bought an Aftermarket Ignition Module, and that worked as it should have. Great advice to check new Capacitors before installing. I don't want this amp, but I would give it to my Mother if I win.

That little amp sounds super, and I am not surprised it completely exceeds specification with all those new caps and the care you put into the build. Very good separation and imaging, and no audible hum or noise at all. I would love to use it with my Technics SL1300 (from the same era). I need to get a cartridge though. Can you make any recommendations? Best wishes for a safe and happy New Years.

Thanks 6String. As far as cartridges, all I can tell you is that I’ve listened to classic cartridges from the 60s and 70s. Moderately priced modern cartridges. And $1500+ moving coil cartridges. Honeslty, they all sound about the same. The cartridge used for the demo on this video, for example, is a modest Audio Technica cartridge that probably sells for under $100. And as you can hear, it sounds absolutely fantastic on that 50+ year old Thorens turntable. Don’t buy into all the hype. Just get something that will integrate well into your headhshell and stick with a brand with a good reputation. You can’t go wrong.

@@FluxCondenser I was thinking the same thing. The modestly priced AT/Shure/Pickering cartridges always sounded good to me as well. Thanks - Gene

That's a nice looking amp and sounds good too. Really don't need much more power than that.

Agreed. For a modest size room, at modest listening levels with modestly sensitive speakers, 20 watts per channel can be more than satisfying.
