We all have an item or items that need storage. This week I took a trip to a friends house to check out an awesome lift system he designed and installed to store his trailer. As you will see in this episode, I like to take full credit for the idea, although I had no part in the design or implementation.
And before you get any good ideas to do this yourself, make sure you consult a structural engineer, its not my fault if your garage falls down - FOR REAL!
And as always, if I missed a good tip or other important information, please post a comment on the blog @ thatsawesome.tv
Enjoy!
Thanks to Alan for letting me invade his garage. For more cool projects, you can check out his blog @ www.panofish.net

Great idea on double speed and muted

Good idea. Now with the holes in the drywall ceiling you want to think about carbon monoxide and your fire rating. Are the screws, lag bolts and pulleys rated for the weight and sheer force? Nice idea, but needs to be engineered with some more safety.

Decent use of space, & ingenuity!

I would worry about the trusses supporting the weight I have lifted the trailer against the wall might need to remove the tongue

OK I did this years ago not only that you definitely don't need to be an engineer also it is extremely easy to do some of it was overly done. I mounted my winch on a sliding bar so I can move it from the single-car stall to the double car stall so I can use the ceiling in both spaces. I have to say you don't need to be an engineer to get this done maybe the way they did it but not from what I saw.

I noticed you talked about liability. I noticed you said winch (5:45) and title. Winch used here is dangerous because winches (often manual winches) tend to free run when power is lost. A winch often has fewer safeguards against lift failures. I would edit the video, add a text disclaimer say "hoist" instead.

RobertSmith Dude that is not a winch he used. It is in fact a hoist. And no, not all winches free spool when power is off. In fact there are very few that do. Also I would rather use a winch for this any day. Hoists are designed to be used vertically, not on their side like they do here. I would go with a manual worm gear winch that goes on sale at Harbor Freight all the time. But you can get a motorized cheap one too. By cheap I mean for that type and size. worm gear winches are more expensive due to that or stronger and more reliable than most others. People just don't like them because they tend to be slower. but here in this usage that really doesn't matter. And the braking factor is not an issue due to the nature of worm gears.

Do you have any other details on how you made this? Where did you get the pulleys? Did you use 1x6's for the cross braces? I want to use a 1" thick piece of plywood permanently attached and put winter wheels and other junk on there... What would the maximum weight be with all the pulley's??

Or, you can find the trailer's center of gravity and use only one cable. That's what I did and never had a problem in over 10 years (an estimated 500 lifts). Note: The one cable design will not work if you try to lift the trailer up-side-down. Expect the system to become unstable when the wheels are facing up.

nice. i was thinking of doing something like this, but i rent, so i think it is out of the question, but i was thinking of making my own free standing frame.

Can you please share the approximate weight of your trailer with the group? Thanks!

The video mentions winch several times but it looks like you used a hoist in the video, not a winch right?. This is one that I am looking at: Northern Industrial Tools Heavy-Duty Electric Hoist 2000-Lb. Double Line/1,000-Lb. Single Line Capacity Item# 142262 but it draws 17 amps which means new circuit needs to be run :-( so what about using this instead: Dutton-Lainson StrongArm 120V AC Electric Winch 4000-Lb. Capacity, Model# 25046 as it has less amps

you could also put it up by the wall

what size weights did you put on the 4 hooks to keep a tight counterweight on the cables in the attic? I'm looking at getting smaller weights for mine and having the weights, hooks and everything go into the ceiling when not in use.

Very dangerous...if this guy was an engineer he should know that pre engineered trusses are not designed for dead weight loads on the bottom cord of the truss. Trusses are designed for compression and tension load over the entire truss. Just a matter of time before complete failure of the ceiling system. Just saying.

Your point is well taken. However, 500lbs spread over 2 or 4 points creates a weight distribution approximately the same as the weight of an average man crawling in the attic space. Perhaps an extra safety precaution is to use the roof trusses since they're designed to handle the downward-force weight.
@Dan-un4jy
@Dan-un4jy Год назад
I like your logic but ..... is that man sitting in the same spot on the ceiling day in day out? All they're doing is spreading the load across more area, not carrying the load. That dead load is a 'permanent load' when the trailer is there and it adds deflection / deformation in the joist system. Then that man actually does go in the attic one day and that ceiling fails from his weight. And, trusses are not designed for after the fact point loads no matter where you load them. It would have been better if they had doubled the existing ceiling joist (1 size bigger - 6" go to 8" ..etc) over to the walls (creating a beam spanning wall to wall) and used that configuration on each side of the trailer connection. Same amount of lumber and safer. And it's 'almost' independent support.
