Lmao. First time I ever used my winch, I was alone on the trail, tried to do the safe thing and threw my sweatshirt on the cable. Was so proud I got myself unstuck, but for the life of me couldn't find my sweatshirt....until I looked at the winch. Only wrapped up a couple times. Luckily I was the only witness. 👍
Synthetic winch cables snap back as well , they also release enough energy to cut a nut sack off but not the same as cable , cable will kill you . Also throwing a towel or sand bags over the middle of it doesn't stop it from recoiling . The safest way to winch is to get everyone away at a safe distance and not standing anywhere between the two vehicles or tree stump etc and if you are the driver be aware at what angle the cable is to the direction of the driver . If it snaps or even bringing a D shackle with it it can cause severe injury or death . Remote wireless winching is the safest way to go.
I have broken many cables. Never had an issue. They too travel on the ground. The issue is when what you attached to snaps. You have the hook or d ring coming at you and possibly part of the attaching point. That is what kills.
The proper response for your buddies comment about, why is your jeep moving and mines not? Would be, because my jeeps a plow and yours is a boat anchor.😂
Cool idea. You could just make one of those by drilling a hole in a hockey puck or find some sort of large rubber bushing/body spacer, etc. Could also use a cheap Huffy Mtn bike rear suspension coil spring with some sort of rubber jammed inside so the spring wouldn't slide on inclines. Also the spring would compress when the hook is pulled all the way in and give some buffer to not pull the hook into the winch too far.
I have done so much 12000 Warn steel cable winching I wore out my fairlead. In all honesty, I 4:43 and I still do not know what this widget is supposed to be doing???? Please clue me in.
I would like to see it demonstrated in an actual failure scenario. Would that rubber donut become a projectile at the end the cable? Would the cable pull through the donut leaving it behind?
A handy fella could make his own rubber donuts from cut bits of tire recap material stacked and vulcanized together. Strips of new recap also make nice push bumper bumpers.
Place the hook on the Jeep you're recovering from the bottom up through the d-ring. Not the top down. If the hook fails, it will send the cable to the ground instead of up in the air.
Im not here to advertise but if your willing to spend the money (as i have) i recommend the factor 55 ultra hook, not just because they are fancy but because they fold away nicely inbetween your rollers And personally i think its a huuuge plus.
Ronny Dahl just posted a video about snapping winch cables which shows that synthtic winch cables do snap when they break. They do not drop to the ground. FYI. Check it out.
here is from the rope manufacturer the synthetic rope seemed to recoil more then the steel cable in the video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cYEMT5avIUk.html
That was really a well done video. Watched a number of cable breaks in the military while I was an Armored Cavalry Officer, Fortunately the military teaches how to stay the he’ll out of the way, but even with that saw a young soldier cut in half by Wench line . Be afraid, they are deadly with a capitol D❗️
One small problem is, while it's up against the fairlead roller it's going to center itself and your cable is going to wrap itself right in the center of the spool. Like anything else, winch operation means you SHOULD BE paying attention to what you're doing.
The winch savers will NOT keep a cable from recoiling and hurting sombody if the cable snaps. Honestly, they're great for keeping the hook eye from breaking, but that's about it.
You say people use floor mats and sweat shirts, but you never say what all that and the Life Saver are for. I know, but others who don't know winches and cables might not know. Thanks for showing me the Life Savor! I've never seen one till now. Do you have to remove the cable from the spool to install it?
I've never even heard of a winch saver, and I grew up ridin in my Dad's 70 Cj-5 that had the "ratcheting" Warn winch. I now own a 49 Cj-2a and an 85 Cj-7, both with older Warn winches (and snatch blocks of course) so what does a winch saver do?
Of all the cables and ropes I've seen pulling vehicles out I have never seen a towel or weight ever stop a cable from hitting the ground as it always slammed up against the vehicle when they snap.
I had an ATV winch get stripped out because as I pulled the winch in I wasn’t paying attention and the hook hit the rollers and stripped the gears. I looked for ever and found the winch saver and installed it. It works like a charm and gives cushion so it won’t strip again and gives weight for the line. Best money you can spend for your winch.
Shawn never heard of a winch stripping bc of the hook getting sucked into the fairlead. Usually just snaps the cable. Even on ghe cheap ass can-am branded Warns with the plastic planetarys. Must've been a harbor freight winch.
You mention this winch saver won't get eaten if it gets close to the winch, but you don't mention the only way that winch saver does any good is if you keep it out in the middle of the line run. Its sole purpose is to weigh down the cable if it snaps, so it doesn't come back directly at the winch.
any rope cable string under tension will snap back when it brakes I really wish yall would stop saying synthetic rope has this magic ability to fall to the ground when it snaps???? however I need one of those line savers where u get it??
@@FairlyHonest i watched a video the other day and that thing wont even slow a breaking cable down. They used multiple things and your spare wheel ung on there doesn't even make it safe.....the rule is stand way way way way back!
Good help I just had a bad idea I got stuck in mud, only one Tree behind me .! I pass my cable under my Jeep...and try to winch it out but my cable snap got stuck for 4 hours..😬
Good video thanks for posting. Question new to winching, I understand how dangerous it can be f the cable snaps so from what I understand if you place the rubber stop in the middle of the line and it snaps the weight of the ball helps control the flying loose cable?? Thanks for input.
+S.T. ENTERTAINMENT That is correct 👍 You can also throw a coat or something similar over the line. Just be careful not to winch the coat up into the winch.
Great video my friend. A shame that product is a fob of rubber that unless is under $10 delivered is ridiculously easy to replicate at home. Nonetheless, thanks for a great literally " life saving" tip!!
+bluedeval03 That would be mine (Alex) Here are a couple videos of its development. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XXMsWnk3f2E.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OeR349Fzcj0.html What's your group? Post a link if it's online :-)
sweet YJ Alex!!! I have a YJ only group on facebook for like minded jeeple. Always good to have knowledgeable guys to help the new comers and us that forget. lol facebook.com/groups/898667880213575
Great idea, but I'd prefer if it could be installed when needed rather than always there. Mainly because I've seen how effective multiple cable stops can be but I wouldn't want a string of these hanging on my bumper like a pearl necklace.
hello You mentioned using the "Life Saver" on the synthetic rope setup on the red Jeep, I was under the impression that it was needed for synthetic , did I get bad info?
Synthetic ropes don't come flying back like steel. They don't retain as much spring power and if they do let go there isn't any weight to them so they tend to just drop to the floor. Its always a good idea anyway though. Belt and braces beats loosing half your face if it comes back through the windscreen
+cmg66999 Search for (Winch Saver) on amazon or eBay. You can also find dealers in google search. I believe ours came from 4wheel parts if I remember right?
