"Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind." - Bruce Lee
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

"Furling system for a wind trubine - is a mechanism that turns the wind generator rotor at an angle out of the wind, either horizontally or vertically, to protect the machine from damage during high winds." Usually using a loaded spring to fold the tail if wind is too strong... btw its known for ages. So in what way an electrical motor, anemometer and a small computer (given a small scale turbine) is a better solution than a simple folding tail? We are not taking into account big turbines... they just don't have a tail to fold. May be I've missed some part that explains it?

how is this less complex than a brake?

A nice job on keeping a simple problem simple! I especially appreciate your attitude and commitment to " expecting more" from small scale wind. I believe there other underlying issues to small scale wind as well. In my years of research, development, and testing I tend to meet more victims of small scale wind, than satisfied customers. I would love to find out more on what successes and mishaps you may have had with your design, and maybe see more credentials on your finished product. Do you have a website or e-mail address that could answer a few of my questions?

Brakes fail under the 60X power increase, or need serviced. This design actually does the most important thing, it prevents the damaging wind-power from even making it into the system in the first place.

Here. Now no one can go "FIRST".

Small wind turbines have failed because they are much less cost efficient than large ones and because they are more intrusive than solar panels for application near peoples' homes, not just because of maintenance. I'm a big fan of wind energy but large turbines is the better solution.

Boring talk even at 2x speed. I like the idea but it seems like a very delicate mechanism. Generally the solution to maintenance problems is FEWER moving parts
