Renewable energy is the future of energy generation. The world is turning towards solar energy and wind energy to cope with the current carbon emission and decrease the carbon level in our environment by producing more renewable energy than burning fossil oil.
Pakistan in collaboration with CHINA under the CPEC contract takes the same measure and takes one step towards renewable energy generation.
An interesting installation journey through the time period of 6 months of 50 MW wind turbines / Farm installation by Orient Energy systems.
48,000 Photographs were taken in order to capture the complete construction in terms of Time-lapse video.

Fascinating stuff. That is just pure art the rebar work. I had no idea such a substantial base was below ground, that must cost a hell of a lot of money just the base alone. And the way the bottom section flange simply slid down the ground fixing bolts, bliss. So if this amount of work is required for each turbine column then that windfarm will take years before payback 🤔
@markusstevens9547
@markusstevens9547 2 года назад
And in 15 to 20 years when the wind turbines are done providing energy, what happens to the base in the middle of farmland. Their could be HUNDREDS of these spread throughout the county buried? or left standing? What to do with the blades since recycling is costly and not widely available. Landfills here they come.

Please tell me what part of this construction methodology can be categorized as “green”? This is referred to as “green technology”. Thousands of CY of earth moved to construct an access road; with diesel/hydraulic equipment (D/HE). Thousands of tons of reinforcing steel fabricated, delivered, and placed by D/HE. Thousands of CY or CM of concrete produced, delivered and placed by D/HE. The foundation concrete placement duration was approximately 14-hrs, overnight by utilizing diesel-powered light plants. The steel is manufactured in an efficient coal-fired mill, delivered by diesel-powered trucks, and erected into position by D/HE. The nacelle is minimum 25% polyethylene which comes from natural gas. PVC conduit for the cabling, insulation for the cables are produced from derivatives of hydrocarbons found only in oil and natural gas. The turbine blades are manufactured in an extremely controlled environment requiring a consistent electrical power source. The blades are also made from synthetic composites derived from fossil fuels. The turbine blades have a restricted service life dependent on natural environmental conditions and will be replaced several times before if ever the generator produces a ROI. Every wind-power installation is placed in natural atmospheric flyways used be migratory species for centuries. These installations are ALL subsidized by tax-dollars in the US. That is the only aspect of their fabrication that can be truly referred to as a “green”. I’m glads it makes all of you “feel” so good. Otherwise, these illogical expeditions of your tax-dollars will be guaranteed to shred more birds than they could ever produce a ROI. CHEERS!

Finally, somebody asking the proper question. On top of all that, they require an immense amount of maintenance and have a rather short life-span (~20) before they become permanently disabled eyesores. To properly consider their environmental impact, on top of everything you mentioned, we'd have to consider the immense amount of machinery and running time required to destruct them to return the habitat to where it started. I respect all the engineering, the planning, the logistics, and the construction, but at the end of the day we have to ask ourselves -- does harnessing wind power really offer any net positive impact on our environment? Is it possible we actually produce more CO2 in the construction of these things than we offset with the power it generates during its lifespan? Can we really call this "clean energy"? Where is the cost benefit analysis?

does one calculate the carbon footprint it takes to put one of these things up, or is that irrelevant?

Vestas studied the carbon payback period for various turbines. This took into account extraction and manufacturing of raw materials, production of the turbines, their transport, erection, operation, maintenance, dismantling and disposal, and the same for their foundation and the transmission grid. The figure was between seven and nine months, depending on the type of turbine. Other analyses have come up with similar figures.
