@@_kitaes_ Because NT 6.2 (Win 8) was the last version that Microsoft really added to the registry everywhere. The big jump to NT 10.0 (or 6.3 in some areas) was only neglected into the system. That's why older 32-bit APIs only output 6.2 to date. For example, Windows 11 was not taken into account at all in the NT version, which is still the same as Windows 10.

Somewhere in the OS it is still build 9200 and nt 6.2, windows 10 probably changed where it grabs the OS version from and the old strings might still be there for compability reasons

⁠@@phonl1 even though the API is deprecated, it still works. However Microsoft has changed the way it works. To get the correct version, the application has to provide so called manifest file which contains information which windows version the app targets. In other words if you create an app now and you say "the app supports win 7/8/10/11", the version will be correct. Once win 12 is released, the app will still report win 11. Unless the app author adds windows 12 to the manifest file.
