The reason that it wouldn't boot in your first attempt happened because some of the boot files are stored on disk 0. I once installed XP to an HDD as Disk 1, and there was an SSD in Disk 0. When I removed the SSD, it wouldn't boot, and although NTLDR was on Disk 1, it wouldn't boot.
