Windshield Removal: Easy and Efficient

This method is simple, easy and efficient as well as cheap. You can use old brake springs to make steel wire rope inserters. Windshield removal is tough work, especially getting a good one from the junkyard. I have removed several windshields without damage. You may replace the windshield using less than $50 for the entire job if the windshield is from a junkyard.
Note that when removing the urethane at the four corners of the windshield, if pulling isn't effective, you can use a sawing motion instead. When pulling the rope, if there is uncomfortable resistance, please check and see if it is caught on any part of the metal frame, such as the VIN tag.

That's how we did them back in the day. I have one to replace and was just checking videos to see if there was anything new out there. You just confirmed the Old School is still the best School.

I thought I was confident. I did not want to use wire, I was pressed for time. I used the tool that looks like a surgical instrument with two handles and a small 90* blade. The urithane was so tough that it drove the blade into the glass. Because of the edge, i could not remove the tool. reversing, moving forward, and removal of tool all cracked my replacemnt at the junkyard. I'm counting on the wire. I only have one more chance at a farther junk yard since i broke the only one in a 15 mile radius. ill give myself more than a half hour. Funny thing is, i would have had plenty of time to use the wire if I did not run litterally to the other side of this huge junkyard to get a can of solvent i passed up when i figured i should clean the glass so suction cups will work. I went and got the can and when i got back went to open it and the screw lid was gammed so poked it. poured some on ground to check it and out came black paint! IN A SOLVENT CAN! to be fair, if I had read it, i would have known instantly but somehow did not notice the sticker had any info on it. I think i thought the can was blank or expected there not to be anything written on it.

Awesome job! That's similar to how we use to do it in the old days except we just used two people. Very nice, thank you for posting! extremely fun to watch.

i use really strong fishing line, NEVER SAW it, you use very thin wire or line and you use lots of soap and you pull and that cuts it

the easy way would be to remove the side rubber weather strip, and expose the 3-4 screws that holding the side molding, and just take them off, metal wire damages the paint severely, not matter how careful one trying to be, and could be seen in your video, im not saying you did a horrible job with the given tools, but definitely not an easy or efficient way, besides that - good try.

It's a nightmare to replace a windscreen after a nuub installed it wrong. Make sure only qualified personnel change yours. If you don't want scratches on your car, or water coming in, or wind whistling in, take it to a shop and have a pro like me do it right. Using piano wire REQUIRES 2 people and a dashboard protector

This is NOT an easy way to remove a windshield, WAY too hard. Buy yourself a side cutting electric blade off Ebay or whatever and use a HackOPS™ 1” Multi Tool Cold Knife Blade Windshield Removal Auto Glass Cut Out. Cost about $20 per blade.

It is when these on-line scam bait n' switch places quote your $270 for the job on-line, but then $670 when you actually call to schedule an appointment. I too am driving an old beater car, no longer with the comprehensive -- and I even used to work a glass shop as a summer job.... 40 years ago.... so I'm game to try this method. (and yes, $49 for a replacement "oem" windshield from a pick 'n pull yard.....)

The price of glass has gone up and I have a baseball sized hole on my windshield. I went to the local u auto pull it and got one for $25. Came out easy but took like forty minutes for me to do alone. No cracks and I saved $250. I will not pay over $200 for a windshield if the car isn't a BMW.
