Dave ,It's coming along well. I just was away on a boat vacation with no internet access and fortunately had the bones of it down enough to practice it morning and night for a couple weeks. It was very nice to get back and listen to your rendition again. I guess I just need to practice it a few thousand more times and I'll get some of the nuance into the piece.Regards,Ken

What a great teacher you are... I have finger style experience but have never used a thumb pick or played Travis style before. I'm half way through lesson three and starting to sound like Chet Atkins! There are so many great side parts, I have three more of those to get through, can't wait to try it on my Gretsch with slap-back echo. Everybody don't give up, it took me three days just to learn the alternating bass; I am now at the two week point.

Guitarra Channel Thank you, Guitarra Channel! I am glad that the vid works for you. The more that you block the phrases the easier it becomes, in other words, form the chord and attempt to move your left or, fret hand as little as possible and it will make the phrases come smoother and faster for you. Good luck with it and please let me know how it turns out. Incidentally, part three is probably the most difficult section of the song. Once again, thank you, for your kind words! Dave M.

An interesting twist on it. I went with a rockabilly style when I play it. I like some of your originality as opposed to just copying the same licks.

Thank you, for the compliment. In order to get your thumb to work properly, I would want to start with some simple arpeggio exercises, possibly some early classical studies. Good luck, with it. Dave

Dave Morgan Fantastic playing. I play upside down(imagine pinky for bass), but this is surprisingly not that difficult, atleast the intro, at part 3 i'm lost so far, but I'm getting there.
@bluzprof
@bluzprof 10 лет назад
***** Thank you, Randy! I had a close friend that played upside down. He was a tremendous jazz man. With reference to part 3--it is a difficult section that I borrowed from a Doc Watson arrangement. Good luck with it and let me know how it turns out. Dave M.

Hi Dave. I've always wanted to learn this song, but kept getting frustrated. Thanks to your video, I learned all the parts. I just need to practise, practise, practise. I'm kind of stunned at your breakneck speed. Do you practise with a metronome?
@bluzprof
@bluzprof 8 лет назад
+meangreen4321 I still upon times use the metronome at times for scales or, chord scales. It is great that you have learned all of the parts. The song is a complete joy to play. I am also glad that the video worked-out for you! Keep in touch as you can. Cheers, Dave

Howard Ho, I would recommend some basic arpeggio studies, to help get your thumb moving in different ways, such as: Giulianni's arpeggio studies. That would be a great place for you to start. I hope this helps get you going. Let me know how it goes for you. Merry Christmas to you! Dave

What are classical studies? Could you give me a few good examples of some that would help me work out how to mix the baseline with the melody?
@jeezez666
@jeezez666 7 лет назад
I believe when you do the bend it's the wrong fret. You're bending on the 4th fret, should be the 3rd, sounds better to me
@buddyruns14
@buddyruns14 4 года назад
He’s not bending, just jumping up to the F#. Which I’m not sure about, everybody else including Loudermilk does the bend.
@cortez121219933
@cortez121219933 4 года назад
@@buddyruns14 because that bend is straight from Satan himself. This song is tough, i dont judge him for not bending that note.
@buddyruns14
@buddyruns14 4 года назад
@@cortez121219933 I consider myself a middling intermediate skill - level player, only recently beginning travis-style picking. Even I handle the bend just fine. Literally everybody else who plays this does the bend, so it sounds really off IMO.

What is that Guitar model I want that Guitar!
@bluzprof
@bluzprof 9 лет назад
Fred Ray Fred, it is a Seagull SWS, folk model from about 2006. It is all solid woods with a nitro finish. It is really a great little box. The new ones are not as good, they have poly finishes but, you can find this model used for about $600--$700, online.
