You're not wrong about Jim Cantore. Jim, and all the rest of the army of media and storm-chasers, come out when a tropical storm threatens. The threshold value for a tropical storm's winds is 40 mph. In any given hurricane season, there are around 12 to 14 tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic Hurricane Basin. On average, two to four will make a landfall somewhere in the US. In Wellington, the wind is 40mph or more an average of 178 days a year.
