In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we will be sailing out of Kingston and the relatively protected waters of the 1000 Islands, into Lake Ontario to cross to Sackets Harbor. In 26 Knots of wind, Lake Ontario can have quite the choppy conditions and it made for a wet and wild ride.
We hope you enjoy the episode. If so, please give the channel some love by clicking the like button and sharing the video link with others. Spread the word! :-)

I cringe every time I see someone handling genoa lines in strong winds without gloves. 20 years ago, the wind ripped the line out of my hands in a split second. Before I knew it, I was looking at the bone of my finger. Do not underestimate the power of the wind on a sail! Be safe and always wear gloves! Another tip: People just dragging their dinghy in choppy waters routinely lose them. Be smarter than dragging your dinghy with a single line and one point of connection!

Thanks. I agree gloves hands is way safer. On a race boat when you are tacking constantly and pushing the boat hard, I always wore gloves. We just don’t tack that often and when we do we let the winch do all the heavy pulling. But I hear what you are saying. Safety is important.

It’s good to see you both sailing together and cruising to different harbors. I have to laugh when it comes to your diet. Janice needs those high calorie foods because she’s a “polar bear”...lol. Anyway I hope vacation was relaxing and fun. Cheers guys!

Thanks John. Ha ha. Yes she needs something to make her impervious to cold.

Hey guys, another great video. I grew up in Rochester NY and I spent a lot of time in my late teens and early 20’s boating and vacationing in The Islands so watching your content brings back lots of great memories. Question for you, 45 years ago we pretty much boated on both sides of the river from the mouth up past Alex Bay without issue. We kind of went where ever we wanted. Is that still the case while your on the water or are there limitations to that now? It’s an absolutely beautiful area with tons of history. You’re right, your channel is unique and I’m already looking forward to the next episode! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Mikie. Glad to bring back those fond memories. You can sail around anywhere but if you anchor on or go to shore on the US side you have to check in with US customs. Luckily they now have an app you can use to easily check in. Then when returning to Canada you have to call in and report back in. Pretty easy process now.

Ha ha. Ok. So if we add battered fish it all of a sudden becomes a meal that’s. part of a balanced diet of nutrition goodness?! Awesome! 😜

What song starts playing at 17:30? Love it. Nice to see what sailing on Lake Ontario is like.

Thanks. Lake Ontario is great. Well it is all we have for now until we retire in a few years. Then the open blue ocean will be our playground. Old video, so I don't recall the songs. Sorry

@@Bowmans-Woods Oh hey, thanks for your reply. I just moved here 2 years a go from Germany, learned sailing when I was ten. I enjoyed most sailing a Laser with foresail (ger. Fock) and wind surfing. Since I just bought a cabinetry shop in Mississauga.... how do I get into sailing without overwhelming my bank account? Would you have some advice for me? Chears, Ben :)) "all we have" is pretty big ;)

Thanks. Yes, always fun to try and find new places to anchor. So many to chose from. Only question is if the bottom has good holding.

What weekend did you guys go to Sackets Harbour?
@Bowmans-Woods

Hmmm. Early July. Right after July 4th weekend I think. We were on vacation. It's all a blur.

Ahhh ok I was there August 1 just curious if we were there around the same time but I guess not.

No. It was for sure in July. Just can't recall the exact date off the top of my head. If you follow us on facebook we usually say where we will be so anyone in the area can find us and come over and say hi. Sundowners !!

I love your channel. I have been watching for years. It cracks me up when you say your moving and doing less than 7 knots. Our boating experience is different. My wife and I have a 21ft Open bow with a 300Hp V8. It will run around 50 MPH or 80 KPH to our friends up North. Lately we have been thinking of purchasing an express cruiser. This would allow us overnight accommodations. Sailing looks like its very technical and a lot of hard work. Is there a reason you didn't consider a trawler with diesel engine or a cruiser
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 6 лет назад
Thanks. Well we want to travel the world by sailboat in the future and we couldn’t afford the fuel to push us around the world in a power cruiser. So mainly sailing is slower but way cheaper. If fuel was almost free then I’d be fine with a motor yacht.

How high do the waves get in lake Ontario? anything like the Atlantic?
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 6 лет назад
Oh no. Never as big as the Atlantic. If it is really windy for a while the waves get pretty big on Lake Ontario but we dont get the huge rolling swells like the ocean. Lake Ontario the waves are way closer together so the action is very bouncy. Like being in a washing machine.

I've been out in 8-9-footers coming back from Main Duck Island, and as you say, the short wave periods can make for a very rough ride (as opposed to the relatively smoother glide in the broad oceanic "saucers"). Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of the great Lakes, by comparison with the ocean, is the lack of sea room (i.e., no matter where you are, in a strong blow you are bound to fetch up on a lee shore within a few hours, limiting your options for lying ahull if things get really bad).
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 6 лет назад
Totally agree with everything you said. The short and steep choppy waves feel more uncomfortable than the larger but wider waves of the Ocean. And it is not waves that usually crush boats into pieces it is the land and the rocks just under the surface and we have that rocks all around us all the time. So here you are on edge every time you are out in a big blow whether you are sailing or at anchor. Thanks for writing in.
