This may be quite candid but I really don’t look forward to those annual Top 100 or Top 10 wine lists anymore. There are just too many amazing wines in so many wine regions around the world. Case in point, I was just in Bandol and Rhone Valley both Southern and Northern sides a few weeks ago, and I can say with confidence that so many of their wines were incredibly impressive and could qualify to be included in such prized lists like this. So, instead of religiously waiting for or reading these lists from WS and other publications, entities, and personalities/critics, I just wait for your posts/videos that detail your reactions, opinions, and comments with regard to such lists. It’s certainly the smarter thing to do! It’s proven that I can trust your taste and recommendations and relate to your opinion or verdict on everything wine so, for me, it’s really a no-brainer deciding to just focus on your content and listen to your opinion and recommendations. So, many thanks for making this video, even though you’re busy and you’ve just recently arrived from your Italian wine trip. I certainly agree with you on your thoughts about the WS Top 10 (yes to that Antinori CCRiserva!), and I feel the same way about the number one on their list. Thanks again and cheers to another exciting wine week for you, John!

Thanks very much, Margaux! Yes, we will have to see what the full list looks like tomorrow. They did mention that Rhone did well, so you may be pleasantly surprised! In any event, I certainly appreciate the support and am glad that they videos are a useful resource! Hope you have a terrific week ahead! Cheers!

Thank you very much, John. A very detailed review of each wine. Prestigious wineries here and the images are great. Your objective description will help me to choose wisely the wines i decide to buy. I also appreciate the tips. I completely agree that some wines should be kept for a longer period of years to get the best out of them. Santé

I’m Italian and I found a way to buy this Brunello from Argiano for about 60 euro. However I was quite surprised about its win, because Argiano produce for example another Brunello called “vigna del suolo” that cost around 500 euro (and also received an highest score from WS and more award). I know that some people bought this winning bottle for 150 euro or more… for this price I would never buy a bottle that cost 45 euro as retail price. I’m curious about the next year awards because the 2019 vintage, for Brunello, is already considered one of the best ever (and for sure WS will not include any Brunello in top 10 🥲).
@AttorneySomm
@AttorneySomm 10 месяцев назад
Sounds like a pretty fair price! Well done. Yes! The 2019 vintage is going to be tremendous! Those wines will be highly acclaimed generally, I expect. Thanks for your comment.

I had a 2014 Greywacke Chardonnay March 2023(Suckling 96, Vinous 94), so I could Complain about it. REALLY good! 96-point nose, balanced, like a Central Coast, CA with oak. 95 Points!

I was surprised to see that a Taurasi made it on the list. Aglianico can be way more tannic than Bordeaux or Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and I also don’t know if their readers are into high tannic southern Italian reds. I do agree that the top ten lists put out aren’t something I base my wine buying choices from. I was in Champagne and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano back in March and they are making great wines at great prices. I couldn’t believe that the grower Champagne houses that cost just as much as Nicolas Feuillatte Reserve Exclusive Brut.
@AttorneySomm
@AttorneySomm 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for weighing in! Yes, I think they picked the Taurasi in part due to the stylistic change made beginning with this vintage that I discuss in the video. Some Aglianico can be approachable and enjoyable young with the right winemaking techniques. Definitely agree with you re: Champagne and Vino Nobile. Cheers!
@ronmcmartin4513
@ronmcmartin4513 10 месяцев назад
@numa--Everybody believes it will get better. Aglianico is Europe's Petite Sirah. It NEVER seems to get better with age. The exceptions are Concannon & Turley in Calif. I opened a 2003 Dei Feudi de San Gregorio Serpico(100% Aglianico) a few days ago, and it looked/tasted like a 2021. Parker 95, my score 91. Still black, hasn't moved. Drink ALL Petit Sirahs, right now. I also had a Sportoletti Villa Fidelia(Cab, Cab Franc, Merlot) about a month ago. FINALLY, after 20 years(because I couldn't sell it), nice Italian Bordeaux, slightly higher acidity, 92+ points, but drink within 45 minutes without decanting. Suckling & Galloni would Love these wines(Acidic/Tannic or Green).

Just tried Antinoris Marchese Chianti 2020… what an uninspiring and forgettable red wine. kind of shocking what mainstream wine industry is drinking these days… nose is fine, generic oaky red fruit driven wine with serious oak oxidative volatile acidity looming in the background but palate is just so boring, thick and gloopy, pointlessly smoky and rough on the finish. mediocre beyond belief.
@AttorneySomm
@AttorneySomm 9 месяцев назад
It is very primary and secondary at that young age. It does gain more complexity with bottle age.

I mainly pay attention to WS 100 list to get a heads up on which wines will be priced up through the roof in the coming months. There are so many great wines out there I don’t put much stock in this type of list. I appreciate you calling it like you see it, but wouldn’t miss it if you didn’t spotlight next years list. 🙏🙏

This list is nothing unusual for Wine Spectator. Lynch-Bages has been a frequent guest for the top ten. Antinori has been a frequent guest as well. The Pichon and Dunn deserve their place on the list. But Argiano BDM in the number one spot is ridiculous. 2018 was a difficult vintage, and Argiano has never produced great wine.
@AttorneySomm
@AttorneySomm 10 месяцев назад
As mentioned, I do not think Argiano should have been WOTY.

Hello John, good morning. I have to say that this particular list of 2023 WS Top 10 wines was not interesting at all for me. I do not plan to buy one single bottle of any of the wines. A few days ago I bought the 2018 Lynch Bages since I found it at $120 at Specs, but the 2019 was almost $180 so I passed. I hope someday to see from you a video of Mexican wines, I know you have very limited availability in the USA, but you can find some at wine shops. I want to know your thought about the salinity of Baja wines. Have a great Suncday !
