This is very similar in how we train in Filipino Kali. We learn early on that footwork and body position will set you up appropriately to not cut or hit yourself with your own weapons. There are many times training with the sticks that if you aren't using your footwork that stick is gonna bounce off your opponent's stick and pop you right back in the forehead. Developing that kinesthetic sense of where your blade is located located around you is needed so you can prevent cutting or stabbing yourself with your own knife, especially considering we have a lot of motions that cross our limbs. These concepts were interestingly informative for Kali. Thanks!

I greatly value and appreciate the expertise and advice of the commentator; I applaud his virtuosity. (Though I'm out of context) I only wanted to add: My Shidoshi and numerous D.I. would always make note of the fact that if I am hitting another weapon during drills it was merely for the safety of my training partner. They pointed out that more often than not my attacker wouldn't be armed with a sword - but a firearm or standard EDC knife - at contact range no less, which might be an advantage for me. It is also likely that if I only have my Longquan cham dao (or baat cham dao) I'm probably in my own space, and the intruder has broken in. This means that I have an advantage in terms of familiarity with my surroundings. We would always train silly scenarios like that.. This was a very good video, with some very valuable study information, and I thank you so much. I am an advocate of preparedness, as I am a licensed private security contractor. If I was caught in such a hopeless situation, my prayer is that I'd have something else at my disposal, but that doesn't mean you couldn't prevail - chance favors the prepared mind after all.❤

The peasant soldiers who used these knives in battle, more than likely were facing someone with either a spear, or a larger dao (dakandao or pudao) with a rattan shield. Parrying + sliding in, and flanking foot work is so important because they had to close distance and flank. Staying in the middle pocket is death. Also, they themselves were likely mostly un-armored. Good to see this type of work though because the guarding hand position and “strike” positions are directly from the knives and pole, while the shifting of the feet and transition of stances is from the luk dim boon gwun. That is easy to see because most of the major southern styles all have luk dim boon gwun, and the only time you see that same shifting as Wing Chun in their system IS in the pole form. Even though it’s nowhere else in their system. Only Wing Chun practitioners have tried to use it for Punching mechanics (which it really isn’t needed to recruit the waist power)
