Sifu David - Wing Chun Master of Online Training i'll have to disagree with this vid... I know that youre a good martial artist... The origins of Jeet kun do is from Bruce lee's experience on learning other martial arts style.... Jeet Kun do is wingchun but mixed with other martial arts type, like MMA... Bruce studied wingchun and combined it with other martial arts that he studied... so Jeet Kun Do is a part of Wing Chun....

Thanks for the video upload. I learned wing chun in my early years cause i was always in a street fight. I had to learn something to protect myself. My martial art journey took me from learning different styles of karate to wing chun to Jeet Kune do, kali, Jui Jitsu then of course mix martila arts. I also studied Aiki do while stationed in Okinawa. I finally realized that it's not the style that makes the person good in martial art but the person that express himself in his art that makes him better. Namaste

Bruce Lee believed in Wing Chun centerline but he had a different way of defending it. He used boxing head movements to move his centerline out of the line of attack. This is a no no in traditional Wing Chun. He also ditched Wing Chun footwork as he believed it to be too rigid. He felt it lacked mobility and power. He used his own form of footwork derived from boxing and fencing with a little Wing Chun structure. This allowed him to put more power in his attacks and move faster along with more fluidity. This was forbidden in Wing Chun because balance and efficiency was seen as more important. Bruce discouraged blocking but he said there's cases where it works. He illustrated some circular blocks in his books. There’s no blocking in Wing Chun. Traditional Wing Chun emphasizes straight line attacks. This is because they land faster than other types of attacks. Bruce Lee believed you should attack at any angle and with power. He used crosses, finger jabs, hook punches, haymakers i think, hook kicks, roundhouse kicks, etc. His kicks came from Savate and some Taekwondo. Bruce actually used horizontal boxing punches and snapped them. Traditional Wing Chun doesn't do this. Bruce believed in adding whatever works to your arsenal like biting, headbutting, grappling, etc. In Wing Chun, you’re supposed to constantly go after your opponent until you defeat him or her. Bruce discouraged this and emphasized proper control of distance. In traditional Wing Chun, you're not supposed to use force against force. Bruce believed that you should fight against force if your force is greater. Traditional Wing Chun puts emphasis on parrying and countering at once. Bruce took inspiration from fencing and made the timing faster. He said the best defense is a strong offense. You counter-attack before your opponent can even begin an attack. He said you should attack first rather than wait for your opponent. In Wing Chun, there's no hitting first. Bruce believed that generally you should kick below the waist but if there’s an opportunity to kick high, take it. There's no high kicks in Wing Chun because it wastes time and energy. The only things Bruce Lee kept was the Wing Chun dummy, some flow drills, sandbag training, etc. That's about it. He only used Wing Chun principles as a guiding basis for his Jun Fan Gung Fu. In some ways, he followed them. In other ways, he violated them.

I think wing chun nowadays is more bout interrupting than block. Well what i learned is to move forward and go in the center fast to work there. Means interrupt the attack getting controll of oponents body and execute pretty much at the same time.
@johndheaton1
@johndheaton1 4 года назад
I am an instructor as well....and I am very curious as to why I always see the rear foot facing forward stance when that was primarily an early adaptation of boxing and eventually Bruce stopped using it and turned his rear foot backwards. In practice this is much better and has multiple advantages over foot facing forward. It allowa greater spring and the ability to utilize the larger muscles in the legs rather than just the calf muscle. It also yields a symmetrical stance perfect for fighting multiple attackers and allows a greater "court vision" of your surroundings. The lunge step is greatly increased in explosiveness which allows more ground to be covered and two of the core virtues of JKD are enhanced being economy of motion an conservation of energy. Try it for yourself.

Thank you! I evan trained Wing Chun but never hesrd this historic context. The most important difference compared to Karate wich was my first martial art is how short distance Wing Chun is using. I missed the humble mindset of Aikido tho in the dojo and I quit for that reason. And being on the floor is also nice in Aikido. I still sit a lot on my knees, and I do forward and backwsrd rolls from any position altho not having touched Aikido since 15 years. When I'm done raising kids I will find some dojo with a good community again.

Jeet kune do is NOT a style, it's a philosophy , it's derived from the teachings of Tao and Zen. Most people thought jeet kune do ad the style Bruce Lee used. No, Bruce never had a style , or he did use many styles. The thing about Bruce Lee was that he never admired anyone, he never wanted to imitate anyone. He learned from Ip Man , but he never copied him. The failure of most humans nowadays is that they kept trying to be someone else, instead of embracing who they are.

Your correct JKD was Bruce Lee self expression. However, like Dan Inosanto the only Jkd instructor certified by Bruce Lee to teach it once said “JKD can be taught but not standardized”. This means that two people can be taught the concepts and principles (techniques) of JKD and in a fight both of those peoples JKD will look different.

Did not quite get the sifu bit. Until "I created this mix of styles." Which is fine we all take what we taught and adapt it to our personal style as Bruce advised. However you really need to show lineage. Your mastery of JKD is lacking some points. First you leave your head open with the low right hand and the loose left. Right should be closer to body and much higher. Left is best about 1 inch from left side of chin. You also missed out the JKD side step and twist step for getting of line with attacker. BTW I would call myself Si Hing and my lineage is from Bruce Lee via Jesse Glover, Ted Wong and Howard Williams via Tommy Carruthers

i been doing wing chun for 8 and a half years but i would say jeet kune do is better because it mix ground and stand up and boxing together i did some history on both so wing chun has its pros but its cons is it has no leverage to use your components in value of quality to keep a fluid movement and seek out weakness and use it as advantages etc so to be cold honest about this jeet kune do as many pros etc because it is always moving

Many does not know what Jeet Kune Do is including this video ! Jeet Kune Do is NOT a style. You cannot say Wingchun vs something that is not a style. Any art can use Jeet Kune Do including Wing Chun. Jeet Kune Do is "Way of the intercepting fist" is a Way. Bruce lee was only using different techiques including boxing to illustrate the JKD. Basically is, "what do you do in every different kind of fighting situation" JKD is not MMA either. because is NOT a style If you go to a JKD class, you don't expect to learn what type of style or techniques, you learn the Way which varies according to person but with JKD concepts. Bruce lee's students were all of different style but still use JKD. Dan Inosanto uses kali sticks. It is using Kali sticks in JKD Way. No Style is Bruce lee's main point.

You can’t say one style is better then the other one. Both styles are unique. When it comes to what’s better . It all comes down to the master and knowledge that master has over their own style. For example if you place a wing chun fight vs Bruce Lee’s fighting style . It will come to who has the better techniques and knowledge. But if you put a wing chun master like ip man who was a real master vs Bruce lee . In my point of view ip man would had win.

Your hand positions are wrong for JKD, should be higher. Depending on the distance to the opponent, we have 3 different levels of the Bi Jong, high mid and low. The high bi jong has rear handon or near the cheek and the front hand like looking down a gun sight with the line going from your chin to the fist to your opponents chin.

When your trying to compare a different style martial arts. Bruce quoted martial art is the art of expressing yourself. So that goes for anything that you have a passion for. JKD I believe is for individuals that have a basic concept of some physical combat form. When you talk about philosophy in this topic it goes into very basic knowledge about you knowning yourself and understanding your limits. Philosophy is a very broad terminology when put into text or writing. People may understand but alot of the time can't express or explain what's it is. Finding what you like and growing from that you need understand history.

Nice video. Could you please reference a source to Crain style being the forefather of W.C.? I had learned from my teacher who had two separate W.C. teachers, and books as well as other sources and internet it derived through a shaolin monk. Also, I get how filming may look nicer from the waist up, or torso up. Though it is far more informative to include the feet and up. Kind of like many notice in moview. When someone who has a very good martial artist background the camera pulls away so to see all the person is doing. Though when as a low level of martial art, they tend to get close into the person doing martial arts so to no show everything and let peoples imagination fill in the big blsnk. Just something to think about for those who may have more experance and want to see how your whole body moves.

Though never learned what she taught to Wing Chung was crain style, or some variation. I had not heard it primarly being used to fight on boats either. I heard it was kind of a blend of the advanced aspect the monk had learned. Some books have even associated it to other aspects of Shaolin. Though I will say that the way most people do W.C. to me seems to eliminate a lot of kung fu aspects we would normally see in other styles. Though, then again I learned mine differently. Though i have seen other schools of W.C. seem to each do things differently in many ways.

@3:48 "jkd only for fast Bruce Lee people". Not true. Sure JKD does have factual methods and superior techniques but first and foremost JKD is a philosophical UNDERSTANDING that allows the mind to solve problems. So JKD is NOT just for fast Bruce Lee's. Jkd is a way of thinking: INTERCEPT THE DELIMA WITH AN OFFENSIVE ATTITUDE, FACE THE DELIMA HEAD ON. Wing Chun is never VERSUS Jeet Kune Do because Wing Chun is not separate from JKD. Wing tsun is actually the basics OF jeet kune do. Therefore to learn jkd you must learn WC first, that's the foundation of JKD. To ever say "jkd vs wing tsun" or to say "when shud I use the one and not the other" is like saying Algebra VERSUS Trigonometry

As a Jeet June Do teacher I like to say that the premise of the title is wrong. The nucleus of JKD is Bruce lee's modified wing chin. That's where you should focus your argument. JKD itself is not a style but does have a base of 25 systems but is not confined to. The concept is completely open and progressive. Therefore cannot be compared to any style that is confined and or has perimeters.

Wing Chun is a reactive MA, control your area, redirect and strike. Jeet Kun Do used WC techniques (and others) to attack the attack and stop it. JKD is fluid, responsive, can be aggressive; JKD "style" or technique is based on the practioner and based on scenario. There is no real comparision of "styles". JKD is adoptive to what works in the moment.

I take issue with Jeet Kune Do being classified a "style" at all. Bruce lee was the first to tell you that his "style" was his very own and no one else's. I cannot remember the exact details but one of his legs was shorter than the other which dictated "his" exact stance and other such factors he mentioned played into the rest of the make up of his style. My first discipline was boxing. The words of Jeet Kune Do resonated with me when I read Bruce lee say that we are all prisoners of our discipline. Boxing, in my opinion and as many will disagree, is the most practical rock steady foundation one could have in martial arts, but it is the very most imprisoned by it's very own discipline. I asked myself if I could fight in the streets as is. The answer was yes, but I would be just as open to defeat as to victory depending on what my opponent did. I could go on for far too long on this concept. What I am saying is that Jeet Kune Do is the way of no way. Try everything you come across. Take, refine and keep what is useful to you and reject what is useless. What is the "best" style? The only style that any of us could call the best is one that we create unique to our person and no one else. That is by far the "best" style. You might ask, "but I want to know where to start". Just start would be my answer. Once you start your journey, you are on your way. Sitting here discussing what is better than what is a waste of time.

Great point... start with a mirror. Do you have long legs, tall and thin? Your style should match those strengths. Short, squat, and a bit heavy? That requires a different style... At the gym 4 hours a day, a meat wall of living muscle ? another different style. The most important weapon is yourself, and your mind: know places, situations, and times that are dangerous, and avoid them when possible. ... Minimize your risks and gain your maximum advantages. Working late puts you out on the subway at night ? Grab some work, take it home with you - leave in the day light. Go to work earlier in the morning. More crime & trouble happens late at night and on weekends. Always plan ahead to first avoid danger and dangerous people when possible.

While there isn't an absolute winner, there're styles that're inferior to others, since they were designed to counter them, such as Chinese styles that're more circular to get around the more linear Japanese styles (not stating that Chinese styles're better than Japanese). Another example would be grappling vs. long-range kicking (Judo/JuJutsu vs. Taekwondo). The kicking style isn't trained on defending against grappling and/or ground fighting, so they're heavily weak to them.

1:48 nobody ever fights in the YGKYM stance ever. 2:22 that is a Bui Ma stance, and that's 1 of 4 stances we fight with Wing Chun. 4:10 Wing Chun does that. 4:44 Wing Chun does this. 5:55 *sighs* Wing Chun does this. 6:40 every strategy you mentioned is 100% Wing Chun. 7:23 You literally proved you have absolutely no knowledge at all of Wing Chun! It's not defensive lol. There are NO BLOCKS IN WING CHUN!!! LOL 8:42 Wing Chun never chases the attacks, and you did. So what you showed with the really bad horrible Tan Da, is not what anyone with even 5 weeks training would do. We never over extend, our energy goes into the guys shoulder or center mass, yet you went to the far left toward his elbow. Nobody in WC does this. Nobody. 9:17 again you chased his attack, It looks like you are doing a bui strike or man sao and instead of going in you went to the far left. Who trained you? What Lineage are you following????? 10:48 your chain punches are terrible. Elbows to the side, chambering all your punches, your fists aren't even center or nipple line. David Wong, this is a punch that everyone learns NOT to do in Wing Chun. Your punches are relying on muscle mass and your body's weight if you step into it. A normal sun fist punch from Wing Chun is absolutely not done like the goofy stuff you just did, and the Sun Fist punch is never chambered, elbows are in the IMMOVABLE ELBOW AREA, and they rely on bone structure, and different muscles and it generates far more power than your punches with the muscle mass ever could achieve. Fight Science has several videos of a Wing Chun Master doing the 1 inch punches and chain punches. Go check them out. Look man, i'm not here to bust your balls on this, but you literally did everything wrong and talked nonsense. WE need more Wing Chun that is authentic and REAL on youtube. Yes and no. It's a lot more balanced. If you use tan sau towards center or shoulder area against a non Wing Chun style hook punch it will collapse ... So that's good to at least know about tan sau, that said he didn't tan sau either he used a weird long range pak like in Shaolin ... But Shaolin is the parent of wing Chun like wing Chun is the parent of jkd do you know all of them? How many styles of Wing Chun do you know? It's clear there are several. Some turn shoulders off some even roation off and strike with bone structure to increase sensitivity and it actually is extremely rapid ... But as far as that hitting hard it depends, sorry. Relaxing you can hit extremely hard with a short relaxed fist using bone structure that's all true. That is true. But as far as chambering, elbow energy is a core thing for power either way ... Rotation or not. Many styles of wing Chun opt for more muscular movement ... This is true ... If you don't think so I'm not surprised but whatever. Why are they different? Because people continued to work on sensitivity to pressure until they came out with the style you are using. It resembles the first form. You DO chamber in that form ... So your idea just went out the window. But sometimes you barely do or almost don't I guess ... That's the first style the little idea. The point is not to give any cracks and to find their cracks ... By not opening up at all in your structure torque or posture. Use as much sensitivity as possible. This is a well known style of wing Chun and legitimized. But you don't rely on a lot of torque. Every next form you learn in Wing Chun pivots. You know this. You are taught it's a mistake. It's an accident. It's for when you are losing. Maybe. But it's not. It's something all fighters understand. You are just using your torque in your body, pure and simple and you are doing it to generate power. As far as Wing Chun doing things that are similar to intercepting fist... Yeah I agree. The only difference is in Wing Chun you can't say you don't defend and attack at the same time. You can say you are not supposed to chase hands. You can say you are not supposed to just defend. You are supposed to attack. But there are plenty of mistakes in lineages of wing Chun I won't insult people. One is an interpretation of "If the door is open, go in" That's true if it's open attack if it's blocked stick and crash. But someone out there told people wrongly if the door is open a billion feet away out of range forget angling and just walk in a straight line using a chain centerline punch. I don't know who he was it she was, but we hate whoever that is. Bruce Lee does blade, blading extends the range considerably for the intercepting fist that is clearly already a central part of Wing Chun. Something different about Bruce Lee was his speed but his power too. Bruce wouldn't just land a lunch before you did ... With this good explanation here .... But he would land it hard enough to interrupt your structure and knock you back, hitting extremely hard too ... Before you did. That's why he doesn't block he is absolutely wailing on them just about knocking them all the way over, they can't finish their attack and that's a fact. In my humble opinion it's best to learn all of Wing Chun though I admit Bruce didn't ... All of jkd and Shaolin if you are interested in any of it, it's very related and the movements of one bleed into another and help you adjust in real life if you use any of those three arts. I bet people might agree that trained all three ... I bet. I don't know. Sure in malls they are taught together. Why learn Jeet kun do ... Learn the parent art Wing Chun! Dude I felt the exact same. Bruce Lee is so amazing but I want to learn the parent art all the way! True. But ... Down the line ... Having learned Wing Chun .... I think you'll just want Jeet kun do. If not whatever, but ... Wing Chun is really a great gate blocking art that never just gate blocks and usually is just attacking sticking messing with structure and balance and position, pivoting and positioning in flanking areas with a square facing stance. Sure. But that is WAY close. Hence why it's good you are basically striking Inna critical range, a concept of jkd. Anyway. They are both good. If you use Wing Chun though at some point you'll want more range speed and versatility. Jkd and Shaolin round out wing Chun and are the parents and child arts. If you want to start saying "I only want to learn Wing Chun," cool, you're just like me. If you still love Bruce Lee cool you're still just like me. But once learned you should see that you need to use wing Chun well when there's no contact ... Not just when there's contact. Speed and range ... Sparring ... Not relying on only sticking .... If course that's important. Bruce Lee is only helping. He didn't finish all the styles due to race hate since he was 25 percent German. That fueled a passion to be different in him. But you should actually learn all of wing Chun ... Really ... As well as all of jkd for sure it will only help you .... For sure .... And maybe even Shaolin. I mean ... I did. But whatever.

To correctly tan against a fuk go towards their shoulder. To correctly tan against a hook punch ... Hit the hook at a 90 degree square angle directly absorbing while at the same time spreading so you don't absorb it ... And the elbow energy roots to your center mass or spine .... directly ... Or it will collapse even then. It does not root to your shoulder, your center. If you go towards their shoulder like a fuk sau that will work against Wing Chun ... And that does not work against a hook punch. Everyone has seen the 90 degree tan sau somehow somewhere I think I might have seen IP use it if not I'm wrong but it's in all the movies as well. Look. Just because it works one way in a drill or form and you should understand it completely that's how it works ... It doesn't mean you don't adjust it to keep it from collapsing with attacks from different angles. Try it! That said Thai was the parent of Shaolin, Shaolin is the parent of Wing Chun if Wing Chun is not Shaolin ... Jeet kun do is the sibling of Wing Chun .... And Jeet kun do uses American boxing as well sometimes ... Which Thai adopts. It's a very full circle thing. And yet ... At the core ... Karate kickboxing Sanda basic Shaolin not the animal forms ... They are all done relatively the same. But Wing Chun has a lot of unique abilities ... So does Bruce Lee!

Unfortunately in today's society of overly sensitivity political correctness, and the general overabundance of laws and regulations, I feel Jeet Kune Do can be 'attacked' by lawsuits if a real life conflict should happen. Since you're the person launching the first strike, it's hard to interpret by bystanders that it's an act of defence. I prefer WingChun just for the sake of staying clear from anything that has to do with lawyers.

Well, wing chun does not have flashy kicks, so that's wrong. Wing Chun is indeed the basis for JKD. Bruce had an intermediate step between, which used a blade stance rather than a square one, added the backfist, a natural for wing chun, and eliminated crossing the hands past the centerline, which is common in classical wing chun. It also minimized pivoting. It also emphasized strong-side forward, unlike wing chun and almost every traditional martial art. He focused on the straight lead, as talked about by boxer Jack Dempsey in his book. He also developed his own version of the one and three inch punches with James Demille. JKD was put together with a modified wing chun as its core, with large additions of fencing footwork and strategy, plus boxing. Lee eclectically picked up whatever different things suited him from that point, but that was the core of JKD, and without which JKD would be random and unrecognizable. The Filipino stuff, etc., was all Inosanto and not emphasized by Lee during his teaching years.

@Deep Thunks Bruce Lee believed in Wing Chun centerline but he had a different way of defending it.

I'm fast. Not Bruce Lee fast, but still fast enough to hit people within my range like a deer in the headlights. My lineage goes back to Lee through Joe Lewis because of his connections to Tracy's kenpo. However, besides being fast, I have trained the technique of independent motion. From what I see on this video, you do not use that. If you look at those old videos of Lee, he does use independent motion. That is where the striking object moves well before the body shows any movement making it very hard to block. I strike part way then move. You move most of the way then strike. Because you are very skilled, your body and punch arrive at the same time. My punch arrives sooner than my body, but is has the momentum of my body behind it. If you do not already do this, try it and you will see what I mean. Best!

Your JKD On-Guard Stance is full of mistakes... A tip for you is to go study and research on the Western Fencing footwork. Conceal your groin and keep your stance compact with both elbows close to your ribs and your rear hand close to your chin. Also to tug your chin down and put your weight forward. When you lunge in with an attack using JKD, just immediately go for the opponent's primary targets and finish him straight away, there's no need to waste energy to chain punch him. Don't overkill. Change your levels of target instead of just keep predictably hitting high. Wing Chun wasn't designed to work on boats and wasn't developed on boats. A nun brought it out of Shaolin and taught it to a lady named Wing Chun, hence the name of the art. It was much later that Wing Chun has been passed onto a boat opera troupe. At the same time Wing Chun has also been passed onto others who lived on land and evolved into many different styles of Wing Chun. Another difference between WC and JKD is that WC practices the "Turning Horse" / Pivoting to Shift Centerline, while JKD uses Footwork to Change Angles.

Ah...mostly right on, EXCEPT there were 5 senior monks that escaped the Southern Temple before all could finish learning the system known today as "wing chun" in order to fight the OPPRESSORS who learned from the Northern Temple after that temple gave up with VERY LITTLE RESISTANCE. SO--- One was a nun named Ng who taught as well as 4 others- I wish I saved the footages... but I have seen the inheritors and footage/and or pictures of the styles of Wing Chun AND ALL HAVE NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCES and training techniques, however the concept and forms are almost identical. Very correct you are about chain-punching!!!!---there is WAAAY TOO MUCH AND TOO MANY doing just that when the system includes MANY DIFFERENT STRIKES AND FLOWING ARM MOVEMENTS- JUST LOOK AT THE WOODEN DUMMY TRAINING PEOPLE!!!! AROUND 116 TO 118 FLOWING MOVES YET YOU SEE MOST PEOPLE EXHIBITING ZERO FOOTWORK JUST HOLDING ARMS OUT AND GETTING THEIR ASSES KICKED BECAUSE THATS ALL THEY DO ASIDE FROM STUPID CHAIN PUNCHING ONLY!!!!!!!! THEY HAVE BEEN TAUGHT WRONGLY AND POORLY!!!!! AND LITERALLY THEEEY THEY ARE STUPID TO TRY TO FIGHT USING CHAIN PUNCHES WITH ZERO POWER ONLY AS WELL AS NON-EXISTENT FOOTWORK ETC. It's a damn shame and no wonder most understandably think WC sucks and is ineffective. WC WAS CREATED TO DEFEAT ALL OTHER KUNG FU- AND A REAL PRACTIONER CAN DESTROY ANYONE EASY ( BRUCE LEE ) UNLESS THEY ARE TAKEN TO THE GROUND AND HAVE ZERO GROUND TECHNIQUES. LOOKUP "SHAMO69" "SIFU KANISHKA (and find clips of him showing WC techniques- as he knows a few styles BECAUSE HE WENT TO SHAOLIN. You'll see the difference in all these people and also may wish they got in the ring so the VAST IGNORANT MASSES could see WC is truly a DEVASTATING STYLE- again THAT'S WHAT IT WAS CREATED FOR!!!!!!!- QUICK DEVASTATION OF PEOPLE) See those and stop wasting time watching vs when it comes to WING CHUN. PEACE AND GREAT TRAINING TO ALL.

Bruce Lee says that Jun Fan *starts* where Wing Chun Gung Fu *ends* . Jun Fan was designed for enhancing your martial art practice into real situations.

Jkd evolved from wing chun as bruce lee saw limitations with wing chun. Jkd is more open and offers a wider variety in terms of self defence than wing chun.
