The Winged Hussars have arrived!
By the 17th century it seemed like the golden age of the Winged Hussars had come to an end. Heavily armored, clad in steel and leopard skins, they had once charged over the battlefields with their wings proudly flying in the wind. But as the city of Vienna came under siege by the Ottoman Empire, the Polish Winged Hussars once more set out to meet their foes on the battlefield. Prepare for a thunderous charge that would go down in history.

Hello, Great video, but there is/was (because the last video was posted over 2 years ago) a channel with the guy - Jędrek castellan of Choinik castle (unfortunately the channel does not allow translation so the videos so there are only in polish) and there is a series of videos about 'hussars' (link to his channel: ru-vid.comfeatured). In one of the series (over 40 minutes long just about hussars) he says that wings had been worn in parades (later), occasionally in battle (but smaller) and mostly 'one wing'. Another thing is that the most important weapon of the Hussar was not only the lance (which had over 40x250 cm banner and that banner made the impression of 'wings noise' and of 'flying hussars') but the polish hussar saber and other weapons (a lot of them) in general regiment of hussars was kind of 16th-century super-heavy tank. And in other of his videos, he says: 'Yeah, the Battle Vienna was a big one, but Battle of Khotyn (1621) was a better one - with the biggest gathering of polish hussars' What do you think about it? Cheers. [EDIT] Also I have rewatched videos about hussars (link above) and Jędrek claims that 'real' victory of the Turks happened during the Battle of Párkány.

When I was younger one of my uncle’s made several set of the hussar wings for a friend’s performance troupe that performed at various state Renfairs. I remember helping my uncle test them to make sure the feathers held during a fast ride against the wind. It struck me the sound they made when you where being subject to their charge. This eerie whipping howl. I’ve always imagined that sound, amplified by a thousand or more hussars, combined with the ground shaking thunder of a massed charge would be disastrous to morale. Since lancers are a one shot for effect, you’d want to stack every advantage you could. Whether or not they did, I can’t say. Still, I would think someone would have noticed that sound and realized the effect it bring to a charge.

You’d be more impressed with the Polish uprising soldiers (Kotwica), they were supremely outnumbered but fought like hell, had slogans such as “one bullet, one German” posted around the city because ammunition was scarce. But yes as a Pole myself I’m very proud of our history, from having the strongest Calvary of all time to having been invaded from both sides (Germany/Russia) and still holding our city until all hope was lost. It was almost like the battle of 300 with Kotwica, they knew they would die, completely outnumbered but fought anyway.

Basically most of the problems between Poland and Austria(/Germans) came after 1683. Thus Austria and Poland rather used to be allies. Poland had a rivalry with Brandenburg-Prussia, but probably because Poland allied with Austria the elector of Brandenburg anyway decided not to send troops to Vienna in 1683. The German troops that fought at Vienna came from Bavaria (led by Elector Maximilian II. Emanuel of Bavaria) with about 10.500 troops, Saxony (led by Elector John George III. of Saxony) with 9.000 troops and from various smaller German countries that provided an additional 9.500 soldiers. Loved this video!! However, I have to point out one small detail: at Vienna only 3,000 Winged Hussars were there. The rest of the cavalry force was the standard cavalry of the time: pistoliers and pseudo-knights of the Holy League. The thing that made the Winged Hussars so famed was the fact that they were the vanguard of the cavalry force attacking the Ottoman redoubt. They were the first ones into the fray and the impact of their first charge was indeed the decisive point of the battle. The Ottoman lines had been failing and starting to give for a few hours before the cavalry charge, but the impetus of the largest cavalry charge in history broke any remaining military order in the Ottoman army. The winged hussars were the tip of the spear, but they were not alone. Other than that detail, great job! :D

Karol Woro You definitely needed more than 3.000 soldiers... Hell the Polish cavalry was defeated by the Ottomans hardly one month after the Battle of Vienna. At the Battle of Párkány Sobieski wanted to attack the Ottomans with 5.000 Polish cavalry soldiers, but his vanguard was routed by the Ottomans and the entire Polish cavalry force had to retreat suffering 1.000 casualties in the process. The Polish troops were saved when they reached the Austrian and German troops that had been a few kilometers away and when the retreating Polish troops reached them the Austrian and German cavalry counterattacked the Ottoman cavalry. Two days later the combined Austrian, German and Polish forces defeated the Ottomans during the second stage of the Battle of Párkány.

Karol Woro The winged hussars were great cavalry, but of course not superhuman like they are seemingly often portrayed. In the Battle of Warsaw in 1656 the allied forces of Sweden (9.500 soldiers) and Brandenburg (8.500 soldiers) defeated a significantly larger Polish force of circa 40.000 soldiers which included around 950 winged hussars.

Ok, the video is nice and all but the research is lacking. Very lacking. I go on and assume it is because not many good sources are available in English, although I'm pretty sure you have access to some well informed Polish historians/history buffs so I don't get why you released a video that is so misinforming Ok, time for some fact-checking: 1:00 Yeah, about that pair of wings. It was rarely a "pair". Although it must be said that hussar wings had many forms ranging from single anatomically shaped wings attached to the shield to one simple straight wing attached to a saddle, metal wings on helmets and anatomically shaped wings attached to their backs. As for those long arching pair of wings... they were either a XIX century figment or something that was only used in XVIII century private hussar banners created after the state hussars were disbanded. 1:32 I'm sorry but what were those supposed Russian influences? Can you please share your sources on that one? 1:35 Bizantine Empire? What? How? The Bizantine Empire was long gone before the first units of Polish hussars were established. 2:04 Yeah, you're basically right although it has to be mentioned that units of hussars that used plate armor existed before. Batory only standardized it. So these hussars weren't "new". 2:32 That's a bold claim, I don't have time to argue it though and it would make this comment even more unnecessarily long. Suffice to say that troops of Gustav Adolf during his campaign in Poland were unsuccessful in stopping hussars with firepower alone. I mean, if that was even possible why they would still use pikes to defend against cavalry, to begin with? One the contrary Gustav Adolf had to rely on field fortifications to protect his troops against the Polish cavalry. It is also worth noticing that most states that took part in the 30 Years War have increased or retained a high number of cavalry in their armies. If I remember correctly the Austrian army cavalry accounted for 55% of all forces. 2:38 Yet a lot of western sources of the time period claim that lancers were a superior type of cavalry to the cuirassiers. John Cruso in his "Instruction for the Cavalry" outright states that the reason why lancers were becoming rare was the fact that it was both more expensive than using firearms and because it was harder to learn and master the art of using the lance. The best analogy I can think of is the English longbow. Also, the way you frame it almost sounds like Poland didn't have similar infantry formations or that it wasn't using other cavalry types outside of hussars. 2:50 Can you please give me examples of Swedish brigades or similar infantry easily countering direct charges of hussars with firepower alone? 4:10 You are misrepresenting how the recruitment worked. In fact, no such things were "advertised". It was very prestigious to serve as a hussar and yes some Sejm bills did promise hussars serving long enough to be first in the queue for vacant low offices BUT those low titles and offices weren't providing any money. On the contrary in Poland, it was expected that a person holding any kind of office would pay for any expenses tied to working at such a position. 4:16 Can you please share your sources about such "contracts"? It's the first time I've ever heard about something like that and I pretty much read all available publications about this formation. Hussars just like all other soldiers would receive a wage, paid quarterly, the amount of which was regulated by the bills of the Polish parliament. No "contracts" like you describe existed. 4:23 Yeah, mostly prestige as many people serving as hussars ended as beggars in the end. Most did it for prestige and because of patriotic sentiments. 4:35 "They were armed with Hungarian style sabers or Polish straight swords" --- Not "or" but "and". military regulations required hussars to be equipped with both a saber and a broadsword or estock. I'm not even going to delve into that "Hungarian style" sabers because it's just too complex topic for RU-vid comment. Suffice to say at the time of Battle of Vienna they wouldn't use Polish-Hungarian sabers. That was mostly a thing of the past by then. 4:52 For the most part historians don't really argue about that anymore. The matter was already solved by Radosław Sikora. In short, the shape of wings was changing with time but the reasons they were used didn't. They were worn both for prestige and to scare enemy horses. At the time of Battle of Vienna, wings were worn to battle by Hussar retainers. 5:14 We really don't miss contemporary accounts, its just they aren't translated to English. 5:46 In fact the longest hussar lances ones were over 6 meters long Just to be clear guys, I'm not trying to be a smartass here. I'm just hoping at least some of your viewers will read at least a part of my comment and realize that they should take your video with a grain of salt. It is important because there are already tons of myths and misinformation about Polish Hussars, and creating new myths is easier than fighting them which I'm sure you are aware of. The myth about Germans going around the Maginot Line is a good example.

Alright: 1:00 yes there were many different variants on how the wing/s were attached to the saddle or rider, as we show in the video. Contemporary engravings by Campion or Eimmart show us the pair of wings were worn quite distinctly towards the end of the saddle or back of the rider during the "carousels" held in the courts of Europe. There is a reason why this image got so popular in the 19th century. 1:32-1:35 The dynastic union between Poland and Lithuania brought the traditional heavier Polish Knights in contact with Lithuanian influences. The Lithuanian military tradition incorporated eastern practices from what came down from Russia and the old Byzantine Empire. True the Byzantine Empire was long gone, but its military "handbook" survived long after. 2:32 The Battle of Gniew is a pretty good example on how Swedish infantry repeatedly repulsed Polish Hussars. And yes, to the end of the 30years war, cavalry did indeed increase, quite a lot even in comparison to 1618, but the Hussars became only a smaller part. Even the Poles fielded only 30% of their cavalry as Hussars. 2:38 Superior to the cuirassiers in what regard? The Hussar-Lancers were still effective against armies that had less armor or firepower to repel them, like the Battle of Vienna had shown. But the way European military was going, with massed musketeers and field fortifications, they were simply outdated. And yes, utterly expensive and difficult to supply as well.

@@SabatonHistory "The Lithuanian military tradition incorporated eastern practices from what came down from Russia and the old Byzantine Empire. True the Byzantine Empire was long gone, but its military "handbook" survived long after."--- Fair enough I guess, although it has to be mentioned that Poland usually had greater influence over Lithuania rather than the other way around and that whole "Bizantine handbook" being still around doesn't convince me. There are no apparent pieces of evidence for what you say. "The Battle of Gniew is a pretty good example on how Swedish infantry repeatedly repulsed Polish Hussars. " --- The example of the Battle of Gniew was analyzed a few years ago in the book "Hussars Phenomenon" by Ph.D. Radosław Sikora. As it turned out Swedish infantry in that battle was hiding behind Vistulas's flood embankment that was few meters high and it was the main factor why Hussars couldn't break their formations. Also, besides the embankment Swedish infantry made use of the heavy foliage and had received crucial cavalry support. It is intellectually dishonest to say that it was firepower alone that allowed them to repel hussars. On the contrary according to Sikora's analysis of that battle, firepower was not the most important factor, far from it. As far as I know, the Hussars Phenomenon" was translated to German so I guess you can recommend it to Spartacus if he has any free time. "but the Hussars became only a smaller part. Even the Poles fielded only 30% of their cavalry as Hussars. " ---- The two main reasons for it were financial shortages AND the fact that at the time (middle of XVII century) Poland was mainly fighting against opponents hussars were not optimized for, so mainly Cossacks and Tatars. As soon as Poland once again started fighting against more western-style opponents the number of Hussars increased. "Superior to the cuirassiers in what regard?" ---- Well, let's start with the fact that Hussars could do anything Cuirassiers could since they also were armed with a pair of pistols (which I think was another thing you omitted in your video) so after breaking their lance (or simply not taking it for the specific engagement) that could act just like cuirassiers. And on top of that Hussars could do everything Cuirassiers couldn't like for example, acting as lancers. Let's start with the fact that pistols had a very low chance to pierce armor even at point black range and had a limited effective range of about 3 meters. So even in terms of reach, they are worse than lances not mentioning accuracy. On top of that, it should be mentioned that most of the time when hussars and cuirassiers clashed it was ending badly for cuirassiers. Examples like Battle of Kropimojza November 28, 1621 or Battle of Posowol September 29, 1625 are particularly interesting since in both those battle Cuirassiers from personal guard of Gustav Adolf were beaten and took heavy losses against less numerous Polish Hussars. And the lances, in particular, were giving hussars many advantages over cuirassiers. Most importantly, in frontal charge Hussars had a significant advantage over other cavalry types. Lances also in the right circumstances were allowing Hussars to overcome pikemen protecting musketeers even in frontal charge. Something cuirassiers were completely unable to do. "The Hussar-Lancers were still effective against armies that had less armor or firepower to repel them" --- On the contrary, Hussars specifically were deployed in large numbers and relied upon against more heavily armored opponents (who most of the time also combined that with higher firepower). Sweden is a good example. Lightly armed opponents like Tatars and Cossacks were avoiding fighting against hussars at all costs. Also, sorry but how are Ottomans an example or less armored opponent? Using armor was more prevalent in the army at the time of the Vienna Battle, that in most western countries. "But the way European military was going, with massed musketeers and field fortifications, they were simply outdated." --- I'm sorry but please enlighten me how increasing firepower was making hussars outdated but not the rest of cavalry that still had moments of great triumph even as far as the XX century (not to mention the Napoleonic era which was a renaissance of cavalry, particularly of lancers and heavy cavalry). The same thing could be said about field fortifications. "And yes, utterly expensive and difficult to supply as well." --- Something being expensive is not an argument against that thing. It has to be confronted with additional data. When a state is able to or in this case the society was able to cover the costs of an expensive formation or gear that is fitting their doctrine there is nothing wrong about it (like the fact that Abrams tanks are very expensive doesn't make them bad for the USA). It is, however, true that because of economic crisis costs of hussars become too great for Commonwealth but that doesn't mean they become outdated. I only fail to grasp what do you mean they were difficult to supply. Could you specify what you mean?

As a kid, I was privileged to know a Polish Cavalry Officer. Always impeccably dressed, his horse was a local personality in his own right. Always the perfect gentleman. He passed away in 1992. A great loss.

"As Sobieski's mounted figure appeared on a prominent hillock in the front line, over to the right the leafy gloom of the Vienna Woods burst into blossom, as a few, then a few hundred, then a few thousand brightly-coloured lance-pennants thrust out between the branches. One by one, the glittering squadrons of the Polish heavy cavalry, the Husaria, detached themselves from the mass of the woods and trotted forward. Led by senators and senior dignitaries of the Most Serene Commonwealth of Poland, its ranks made up exclusively of the highest-born, this great war-machine shimmered with the wealth of vast acreages. Each rider was helmeted and plumed; his breastplate encrusted with gold and gems; cloaked with leopard-skins; winged with great arcs of eagle-feathers rising over his head; mounted on a magnificent charger caparisoned in silk and velvet embroidered with gold. Each husarz carried sabres and pistols with jewelled handless, and a twenty-foot lance with streaming pennant. As they broke into a lumbering canter and lowered their lances, the pennants and the wings on their backs set up an evil hiss while the ground shook with the pounding of fifteen thousand hooves." - Adam Zamoyski, The Polish Way

I'm Polish. Our national motto is God, Honor and Homeland. These are words known by every Pole. If God is with us, who can be against us? Even our king Sobieski, despite winning the battle, did not forget about God even for a moment. He said, "I came, I saw and God won"

I have a book on the History of Cavalry, which says that the purpose of the "wings" was tactical. The Cossack and Tartar cavalry were mostly agile light cavalry, who used a lasso as a weapon to unhorse their opponents. The purpose of the "wings" was to prevent the lasso from catching you. The wings were meant to grab the lasso. The wing gets taken off, but the rider is unharmed. Sort of a breakaway anti-lasso defense.
