A couple of points. The longest river in Europe is the Volga, followed by the Danube. On the point of GB plates. One of the conditions of Brexit was that we had to change our country ID plates to UK…..insisted on by the French, AND, the French insist on full sized UK stickers, not ID on number plates. That is only acceptable for EU members. Sorry to sound pedantic, but if you are giving information in reply to questions you don’t want to give out duff info. I really doubt the GB thing would cause a problem unless you got stopped for something else, but it’s the French that insisted on it, so if anyone is going to object it’s them…..

Unplanned is the way to go - I plan start date and duration but everything in between is up to the adventure❤️ no stress about changing weather conditions or having to leave a nice place just for the sake of the plan

What a lovely country France is. The Goldwing has got to be one of the best bikes to do it on too, and we love the sound of that engine purring 👌🏼 Im rather partial to a couple of apples every now and then; im working my way up to melons 😉

Melons can be over-rated (counter intuitively) - apples are perfect in my (considerable) experience….snd yes that big flat six sounds great doesn’t it, really comfy too - the best touring bike two up by far imo.

The trees in Carpentras are called "Platane" (Platanus) and are particularly used in mainland city streets because they're resistant to pollution; They shed their bark in patches, which creates the pattern on the trunks. You can find them in the south but in Belgium we also used to have them. Looks like a great trip and exactly what the Wing is made for; Winging it!

On a recent bike trip to visit a friend living near Nîmes, I was told the trees lining the roads are mostly plane trees which were planted under instruction from Napoleon. They were situated to offer shade to his marching troops in hot weather.

@@TheMissendenFlyer Mighty impressed with how relaxed the wing appears to be, at one time you were going through a town at what appeared to be just over 20mph and the wing selects ‘4th’ gear at hardly any revs! I hope you keep a note on the fuel economy for the trip, would be very interesting for us nerds! 😀👍

In Belgium, (almost) all bikers greet, mostly with a V-signal. Even cops on bikes greet (and turn a blind eye for small traffic violations by fellow bikers)

Yes for me I think this is the best way to tour - no plan, just a bike and some time to fill, brilliant!! Does have some disadvantages but i love the flexibility….

I totally agree with you about maps, part of the fun of a trip is studying a map. I was an HGV driver for most of my life, some of it in Europe, and have never owned or used a satnav.

I'm defo not anti satnav, infact I wouldn't do a tour without one - I just don't do all that route planning gubbins (I know some people love that) on one....for me on this trip, flexibility was the key!

I visited Chamonix, Lake Maggiore & The Verdon Gorges in September so will watch this series with interest. My tour was unplanned as well, deciding to where to stay on the day. I stopped for lunch, thought about where I wanted to end up that day and booked the hotel while having my lunch.

PS… found a lovely hotel in Reims city centre for an overnight stop, (with secure underground parking) on a recent tour down to the Italian Lakes an Florence. Check out the Best Western Premier Hotel de La Paix for any future tours 👍

From an experienced France traveler some great tips Andy. My motorway tag maybe cheaper. I used leonardo who only charge 2euros a month when you use the tag so 99% of the time it doesn’t cost you anything.

Andy, I think the trees with “patchy” bark are plane trees. They clean the air and shed bark as they grow. Napoleon ordered some roads be lined with trees to protect his soldiers as they marched.

Got my Saturday morning sorted for the next few weeks 😊 Be great in your hotel reviews if you covered Bike parking and security. Mont Ventoux is fab, I cycled up it a few years ago but it wasn’t windy. And I put my tag in an armband on my left arm, works a treat.

@@guyrose2239 I’m on the larger size compared to a competitive cyclist which makes the ascent a bit more interesting 😂 But gravity is your friend on the downhill which was equally awesome on the pedal bike. Personally, I found Alpe d’huez an even harder a log for me though!

One thing in the preparation you may have missed was travel insurance, I’m sure you’ll have done this but not everyone touring in Europe understand that ordinary travel insurance does not cover you and you need to pay a bit extra to get proper cover.

"Swing a Cat" refers to a Caterpillar bulldozer. To swing one round, you can make one track drive forwards while the opposite one drives backwards. You can swing it round on the spot, or on a tanner, if you know what a tanner was😂

I have an Emovis tag that I've used for some years. While it's great in the car, it was somewhat unpredictable on the last bike tour and at one 'peage' didnt work at all and caused quite a lot of hand waving and horn honking. Even with a good battery and it not buried deep in my pocket it was a bit patchy. Just bear that in mind if you're going to do it for the first time; maybe even stick it to your front screen. *I'd just add to that, if it does fail to work there is a barcode on the back and you can scan it at the Peage booth. You'll see the little perspex window. Scan it there and it'll let you through. I dearly wish I had known this before finding out the hard way!

Thanks for bringing us along, I like the way to plan the tour, very refreshing. I thought you had a dedicated Sat nav fitted but that may have been your last wing? One thing Nathan Millward recently vlogged about accident recovery where he’d met some people one of which had damaged his crankcase and as it was not a break down but an accident his insurance company would not cover him …. I wonder if the Honda scheme is the same ?

Great video. I had a bit of a road trip a couple of years ago to Beaune and Lyon, but did it in a lovely old Jag that I had. I'd love to do it on a bike, but my XSR900 probably isn't the bike for it (awful on a motorway!). Look forward to the next instalment.

As mentioned it's a cat o nine tails reference, but on ships like Victory the person being flogged would be chained up below decks but because that level had a very low deck above it you couldn't get a good swing with the Cat! Also the cat had to made by the person getting whipped! And it would need to have glass or other sharp material sewed in! The word Tow Rag n dirty tow tag come from the same era. The tow tag was a rag on that was dragged in the sea up on the heads, for wiping ya bum after a poo, if it wasn't lowered enough you would go to wipe your arse and it would still have poo on it! This would then be the fault of the young lads who are meant to keep that area clean, the sailor would shout out Dirty tow tag at him while giving him a good hard clip around the ear! There are tons Naval slang terms now used in Civvy street

Great bikes . Just back from a week in France on my non Tour DCT . Out of interest, do you know about re-syncing the DCT ? Takes 5 minutes and transforms the gear changes , as they go slightly out of sync over time
