A detailed look at the Wingleader Photo archive number 18 - the Avro Lancaster. This third book in the Lancaster series covers the less common marks of Bomber Commands most famous aircraft: the Mk II Bristol engine powered version, the Mk VI engine test beds, the Canadian built Mk X aircraft, the Type 464 Provisioning (also known as the B.III Special used by the Dambusters) and the B.1 Special used to carry the Grand Slam and Tallboy bombs.
This book contains lots of detailed, hard to find reference photos, often annotated to point out small details of note that are useful for the modeller. You can find out more about Wingleader's books on their website: www.wingleader...

Thanks for the presentation! Seriously, I’m not very much into planes, but all these small guides for modelers are of huge worth! And the price point made me love it even more! Already browsing through the website…😄

Many thanks for purchasing the book and for producing such a detailed and useful review, I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Re. your comment about the Type 464 undercarriages, they were in fact completely standard and not strengthened or changed in any way. The undercarriage on the B.I (Special) on the other hand was the strengthened version borrowed from the Lincoln and featured enlarged wheels, brakes and treaded tyres. Good luck with the modelling!

I should be thanking you, Peter - the book is fantastic. Thank you for the information about the undercarriage - I could have sworn that Airfix have a different set in their Dambusters set compared to normal (not that that means anything). Great to hear direct from an expert!

I have the Mosquito Bomber edition from this series that is part of my reference stack and it’s an exquisite book like yours. Great images and color side views - helpful as I’m building a Canadian built B.25 (B.XXV) model.

Good to hear - I know so little about the various versions of aircraft like the Mossie.

Wow. Exactly what you need if you're intent on winning modeling contests, or building a specific plane for descendants of its crew. Such reference works aren't just for rivet counters. As you say, too often commercial kits of allegedly different variants just have different decals and maybe some extra clear parts. At 20:00 you read my mind. That patch looks almost exactly like a roundel. 😊

I’ve been eyeing this series for a while. As I live in the US, I’ll have to save up to buy most of the range so that shipping is worth it.

Nice presentation, the book is on my to get list. We had Heritagecon (Canada’s biggest IPMS show) this past Sunday and it was held in the room with the Mk X Lancaster which was under some repair but will be airborne next year I believe, it was a bit surreal. An impressive craft. Thanks for an interesting presentation.

@@paultaylor4365 It's a lot of money but well worth every single penny! The Lanc flights usually fill up about a year ahead anyway, but with the aircraft having been unserviceable and not doing any flights last year they've got a lot of catch up as well!

So many Lancasters so little time I have the two Airfix ll and lll but haven't worked them into my build schedule yet because I wasn't sure how I wanted to build and display them yet. Now I'm glad I did based on the tremendous historical detail in this book. . BTW - Grand Slam was 22,000 pounds. I heard a report that there were some Grand Slams on display at a museum in the UK. I believe they had been there about 20 years. Somehow, they discovered one was still armed. EOD must have had an exciting day that day. With all of these variants it makes you wonder how in the world they had time to make the changes. Separate question, are you aware of a Spitfire MK ll variant, John Magee , author of High Flight, flew those when he wrote the poem , I wanted to work on a tribute diorama. Ironically I ordered an ICM KIT 1 /48 scale ground personnel for Spitfire. They came from Ukraine, Hard to image being at war and still making kits. They met my objectives so I turned around and ordered another. Back to the Lancasters, As a back up to the B29, they trained with the 509th incase the B29 could not be modified for the A bombs. Last , have you used VMS products. Sorry for such a long post, you are closest to the history of what I like to build. Thanks for another great review, looking forward to your net build. Cheers

Hi - thanks for your comment. Yes, I heard about the possibility of using Lancasters against Japan - although of course this task was right at the very limit of the Lanc's performance too. I built a Far East Lancaster a while ago - painted all white to reflect the heat. I've used a couple of VMS products - their gravel and sand fixer and their gloss and matt varnishes. I really like the varnishes - the matt is dead, dead flat - but man are they hard to airbrush. I find they just clog the nozzle - sometimes literally within seconds. Worth sticking with though.

You’ve been cheated. Lancs were originally going to nuke Japan. 3 were flying around painted completely black with no markings I would assume windows would have been different. Maybe other things
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Год назад
Yes, the Far East Lancasters...I built one a while ago from the Airfix kit of the same name. Mine was white (presumably to reflect the sun). I don't know if they are included in Wingleader's other books, but I wouldn't consider this book a cheat for not including them.
