Produced by Warner Bros. in cooperation with the United States Army Air Corps and released in April of 1941, WINGS OF STEEL was directed by B. Reeves Eason from a screenplay by Owen Crump. It also features Herbert Anderson, Tom Neal & Ralph Byrd.
Shot in Technicolor, WINGS OF STEEL tells the story of a sports champion (Douglas Kennedy) who is drawn to aviation to help his country in the war effort. The film features color footage of the B-17 at :41, and Stearman training planes at 1:18 and throughout. As a recruiting film, it shows a somewhat predictable view of the indoctrination of airmen as it was done on the cusp of WWII. At 4:57 the instructor says the famous line: "this men, is an airplane" !
At 8:30, basic maneuvering is shown with the Stearmans. At 15:19, P-40 Warhawks are seen at a basic training school at March Field in California. At 15:50, new B-17 bombers are also shown at March. At 16:00, LINK trainers are seen in use to teach instrument flying.
We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example like: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference."

Beautiful aircraft for sure. The US was lagging way behind other countries in men and machines. This film came out midway through 1941 as the defense build up was beginning to hit its stride. Aircraft was a priority at this time.

Yep, that's the Army I remember. Name calling and degrading. Reminds me, of why I did not make a career out of it!

Interesting for its strange corniness. I often wonder when watching period films like this if people actually talked this way or if the script writers were trying to be clever.

The kind of guff written into the dialogue, was excruciating to listen to, and the odd punching to even the score at the end you think would be unacceptable even in a military film. The recruits are also about 15 years too old. Its very interesting though to see these propaganda films. My father received letters from his slightly older friends fighting in Europe, imploring him not to join up.Several of them died.

The punch was bizarre. And why couldn't the football jock/pilot allow himself to punch back? Wasn't sure what the message was supposed to be there, or if it was just clumsy writing. Perhaps a subversive scribe who also had friends in Europe was sending a subtle message by making the characters so over-the-top goofy that they were not to be believed.

Maybe the jock/pilot knew he would likely kill the guy if he let him have it? Yes, bizarre about covers it.

ghostmanriding I imagine all the age-appropriate men were too busy learning to fly and fight to appear in propaganda films. Production values of propaganda have only gone up since then.

No they talked pretty much the way we do today except for the popular slangs at the time. These films I think were intentionally corny as many of the war propaganda films were. They were just trying to instill a will to fight, patriotism, and for the civilians hope, courage, a feeling were going to.win and with the same patriotic desire to go and work long and hard hours in the war industries. For some reason until around about the mid fifties sometime the way Hollywood tried to stir great feelings of nostalgia, love, patriotism and stuff like that was through corny stuff like that. I kinda liked it though. I sure wish I could be living in those times right now. Even with the war on and all the strife and sacrifice that meant the times themself were way better, the people were far better, stronger, much more independant. Just all around better. If there was some kind of great national emergency today the generations of today would never respond as they did then. No.possible chance and it's very sad.

🇺🇸 I think it’s hilarious that they encouraged officers to strike each other…just goes to show that those were different times.

If it's a recruiting film, it's in the public domain.

I wear a military green colored t-shirt with the United States Army Air Corps Insignia on the chest area along with my 1940's Coca * Cola logo red colored ball cap hat. The United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) was active from 2 July 1926 - 9 March 1942 and was disbanded 18 September 1947. The Lineage of the United States Air Force are as follows : Aeronautical Division, Signal Corps 1 August 1907 - 18 July 1914, Aviation Section, Signal Corps 18 July 1914 - 20 May 1918, Division of Military Aeronautics 20 May 1918 - 24 May 1918, Air Service, U.S. Army 24 May 1918 - 2 July 1926, U.S. Army Air Corps 2 July 1926 - 20 June 1941, U.S. Army Air Forces 20 June 1941 - 18 September 1947 and United States Air Force 18 September 1947 - present. The United States Army Air Forces (USAAF or AAF) was the major land-based aerial warfare service component of the United States Army and de facto aerial warfare service branch of the United States during and immediately after World War II (1941-1945). It was created on 20 June 1941 as successor to the previous United States Army Air Corps and is the direct predecessor of the United States Air Force, today one of the six armed forces of the United States. You're welcome for the clarification.

It funny Wings of Steel. If they actually were anything but a paper thin sheet of ultralight aluminum those B 17s would only manage hauling their own weight into the sky... But no I get it, steel like in tough solid unstoppable ect...I just got a kick out of it.

This was because of official racial segregation in the US military, hence the need for the Tuskegee Institute training program for Black pilots. Ironically, when the U.S. Army Air Forces First Motion Picture Unit produced a film about the Tuskegee airmen in 1945, entitled "Wings for This Man", it was narrated by a young Ronald Reagan. That film is also on RU-vid.
