I'm not suiter or jumper. Everything looks so purpose built, slick and functional on that suit. Wow! Art! So, I have a question. Why aren't the shoes the pilots are wearing specific to the sport? Tennis shoes? Maybe an aerodynamic design that improves air flow and maneuverability? Dorsal fin off the heel. That way you could crab through the air. But like I say I'm a nobody. I'm just in awe of you suiters!

I flew wingsuits for a short while. Shoes are irrelevant, any normal shoe will do, the wingsuits are made as such so you cup your shoes into a purpose build slightly enforced fabric space, you can see it here: bit.ly/2WtkH98. The aerodynamic design is fully delivered by the wingsuit since all is covered by it, it's also functional since it provides tension. You do however have a point but it's not used for wingsuiting. The only skydiving displines I'm aware of who might benefit from specific type of shoes are the freestyle skydivers (like ballet in the air) and perhaps the speed skydivers (record vertical speed discipline). Both of those disciplines are extremely niche and there is no manufacturer making purpose built shoes for that as far as I'm aware of.

All that matters really for aerodynamics is the leading edge. So having tennis shoes won't matter much as they will be located in the already turbulent air and thus generate almost no lift anyway

I'm in KW, get me suit, I'll fuck shit up with a tether instead of being bolted down Just put some serious matting on the ground for when I inevitably smash my teeth off the ground. I want to land, On my belly, with a Kevlar suit. Like a slip and slide Or, make a fabric that lets us using the wind flowing through it to charge a super cap system, then before hitting the ground, burst this charge backwards for around 5 seconds to slow yourself to 15-30mph Like spreading your wings before grabbing pray off the ground after swooping down at top speed.

As a skydiver myself, granted with limited wingsuit experience at 40 wingsuit jumps, I wonder how this windtunnel test is representative to the real thing. This wind tunnel test seems to give 100% head wind meaning the relative wind comes fully from ahead. In real circumstances, depending on pilot and wingsuit used, the actual relative wind will never be fully ahead but diagonally coming up from down ahead since the glide ratio is more or less 2/1. Meaning for every 1 meter dropped the pilot will travel 2 m horizontally.

They're probably testing the angle and airspeed of a WS in a flare. If they wanted to test deployment at full flight they could angle the wingsuiter back so the wind is hitting more of his belly.

Oh and a Ride out to where evvvvveeeeer the fuck you're at. If you have some spare Lithium Phosphate batteries I'm down to bike it, But my bike will only make it like.. 30km? Maybe 60 km if I jank wire all my polymores together?
