Winifred Atwell's arrangement of The Black & White Rag. PLEASE NOTE - MICHAEL SANDS DOES NOT OWN THE SHEET MUSIC FOR THIS SONG AND IS UNABLE TO SUPPLY IT.
Thanks for the comment- I'm glad you enjoyed my performance! To be called "amazing" is every pianists dream and I thankyou for saying it! Do you really think I'd ever stop playing?!!
Thanks for such a flattering comment! I learnt from the age of 6 and finished when i was 18 (passing classical grade 8 with a distinction i'm always proud to say!). I love to play the ragtime music and think Winifred Atwell was the best pianist the world has known. To have someone say i play like her is a great confidence boost and thanks again!
I thought I would never again hear such accomplished playing on the piano. Michael Sands simply is the best pianist around today. His style is effortless, his interpretation flawless and his technique is simply unbelievable.
Thank you SO much! I'm awfully happy to watch your outstanding vids. I LOVE this music (have this CD of Winnifred Atwell) Keep playing and keep posting these wonderfull videos, please.
Thankyou! Glad you liked my performance! This kind of music sounds better on an out of tune piano..but it isnt a requirement- just suites it quite well!
Future generations, thank you to humans like you, will be able to enjoy this fantastic music. Thank you for the present and future generations. You make today an special day for me!
Stunning !!!......my daughter and her friend won a big tap dancing duet competition using Black and White Rag for the routine and I fell in love with the tune(as well as their performance) as a result....to see the music perormed like this is amazing......keep going my friend you are a star !!
Been playing this repeatedly for a while now, and still amazed how good it is. If I don't actually watch while it is playing - I am convinced it is Winnie Atwell!
What a great old piano you have there. You can't tune a piano to sound like that...it's something that comes with age. I once heard that Winnie Atwell searched London and district before she finally found one in a pub that sounded just right and it went everywhere with her. You may never equal Winnie...but you come damned close!
What a charming memory to carry with you- a testament to Winnie's warm and generous personality that captured the hearts of all who met her. Thanks for you kind comment re my performance- i do hope you enjoy my next uplaods due in september!
Well Played My Man!!! I remember this tune from the BBC Micro game "Repton", which sent chills down my spine while I was playing it! (the game, not the piano!)
Michael - I've saved all your videos to a playlist and enjoy them over and over. There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said. The music is good; your interpretation is fantastic; and the quality of recording is very professional. I'm keeping an eye out for the CD!
Thanks for such a motivating comment!! I intend to up-load more as soon as i can! Glad you enjoyed my performance- and i hope you keep watching and enjoying!
We were brought up on Winifred Atwell's music- my parents saw her in concert and we had many of her records. You have picked up the nuances of Winnies playing beautifully - so many times during your playing you sounded just like the lady herself. Excellent playing; you have a great talent.
Greta job, Winnifred is coming back. 10 years ago, almost nobody knew about her in the Netherlands. So i had to transform a vinyl of my dad into a CD on my own. congratulations and please, carry on.
This youtube is great...it's everyone's 15 minutes of fame...and you are a wonderful new addition to the youtube family. Keep up the posts...I will be watchin'. Your fan in Chicago - USA
Thank you for a magnificent re-reation of this favourite number. It was brilliant! And boy do I envy your ability to play by ear. Myself, I'm hopeless without the dots. Thanks again! :-)
Bloody brilliant mate!!! Playing a piano is like patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time- damn near impossible!!! You make it look so easy... :)
amazing! that really is a great song played by a top notch pianist, well done! super great ragtime tune, that will never loose its quirky sound! especially when played so well! 10 out of 10!!!!!! :-))
I recently experienced just how difficult this version is by putting it on youtube and you do a fantastic job. If you can smile and wink at the same time you have got it made Jace
ive been trying to play this for the last 50 years ! you did better than me, ive never made it to the end. youre right to look pleased with yourself. good for you !
As has been said, that was magnificent. I have been playing from svratch for 16 months and have been struggling with the trio sections in may of the joplin greats. I hope to God I can eventually be half as good as you.Brilliant!
And for those of you old enough to remember "If your watching in black and white its the one behind the blue!" lol Pot Black. I take my hat off to anyone who has a talent such as this...Superb..........................
My eyes are a blur.. I tell you my friend you are one of a kind.. I hope Richard Clayderman has his eye on you, because you out class him..! very nice indeed..:) thank you for sharing this with us mere mortals.!
No, This is the Winifred Atwell version, for which I have the sheet music (Price 3 shillings) and the right hand is mostly marked 16va, so his playing is correct. As far as I can tell, and I have listened to Winnie's version many times, the kingofthekeyboard's version is virtualy perfect. Only music purists would know any difference. I too, have been trying to play this version for 30 years, and have never been able to play it as good as he. I got close, but never close enough. Brilliant.
