Gents, thank you for the great video. Learned a ton and you have me thinking about setting up a gateway. I have a smaller city lot and I'm curious about how you deal with the gateway signals interfering with your normal operating station. Is there a recommended distance between antennas or filters? Or is this of no concern? Thank you!

Depends on the bands and antennas you’re running. It does require a dedicated set up. I usually run my VARA FM gateway on a dedicated always on additional radio and antenna. The portable solar powered gateway stays packed ready for deployment or when I run portable ops to test it and keep it in good working order.

@@WaveTalkers Thank you! When your 2m radio keys up in close proximity to your normal 2m operating station can you tell? I have a friend with a packet gateway and he had some trouble with the gateway interrupting his normal station when it transmitted. Thank you for the reply!

Oh, my I have gleaned from your wavetalkers 11 video. I relate to starting winlink in much the same way. Just with things in my garage. I have asked the same questions. Oh, how does this work and so on. And Chris I like you without the beard. I am presenting winlink at HamConZion this summer in St George. You know how I got started and what works for me. I would love to meet you there.

Glad you're finding it helpful. Check out episodes 57-62, we did much deeper dive into setting up Winlink Gateways. Checking out HamConZion, looks like a good time, will see if we can attend.

Thank you for the video. Rather than use a Windows PC, have you considered using a Rasberry Pi for the gateway computer? The Pi is very low power and be configured easily to auto start everything needed to bring the gateway back online after a restart. Just a thought due to Microsoft being Microsoft. 😉

A Pi would work fine, low power, cheap, etc but the WinLink Gateway software is only available for Windows.

@@WaveTalkers I originally thought the same about the gateway software and Windows, but Jason, KM4ACK, has a great step-by step video on building a WinLink gateway on a Raspberry Pi. Check it out at: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F_s4zIUIfew.html He uses a build-a-pi image that he created, which is available to the public, so at one point he must have built code for the Pi from the Windows installer. Just speculating of course.

@@IowaSheepdog Jason KM4ACK does great videos and yes, that's a nice step by step guide for getting a basic gateway operational on a Pi. For a basic gateway, rock on. However LinBPQ running on a Pi is currently not capable of supporting a full hybrid gateway like even a basic win pc running the supported gateway software of RMS Packet, RMS Relay, and RMS Trimode.

Good information but not a single word showing downloading, installing, and configuring the gateway software itself !!! This session is not complete because it assumes too much that newbies should already know but they do not.
