Winona Ryder interviewed by Terry Wogan at the time of the UK release of MERMAIDS, also discussing Johnny Depp, marriage, and GODFATHER III ('WOGAN' 26/04/91)
I've always thought she was the polar opposite of a "classic" beauty. She's got this slightly edgy gothic whimsical vibe...and I've always found that insanely attractive in girls. I used to have such a crush on Winona...and hell, even now she's still gorgeous. But back in the 90s she was inhumanly perfect to me.
avedic OMFG. YES. I was trying to describe her beauty one time and honestly yes, polar opposite of the classic beauty. There is this gothic, whimsical look to her.
@@annajackson1238 youre the one that mixed up with there terms. "You dont put AKA" at the end of a sentence like "etc". Look up the meaning. When people are talking about things looking gothic they are taking about a style of architecture used mainly between the 12th and 16th centuries. You are getting mixed up with the modern fashion meaning of goth which started in the 80s. Not only that but the comment is about her face not her style. Then people say someone is a classic beauty it means they would be beautiful in any era, in any setting, in any sort of attire. They arent saying she looks like she is from the classical period in history, which like Gothic is for architecture is , classical is a period marked by music history. Your comment is such a jumbles mess of ignorance its incredible you are telling other people not to comment unless they know there facts.
Because today anyone who owns an Instagram account can be a celebrity after two days of posting nude/barechested pics. Back then, you either have to have an immense amount of talent or really good looking without political correctness. These days, fat people
I was 8 and I remember watching them do a joint interview on UK morning TV in the UK and I really remember how excited the presenters seemed to have them both on the show together, and how cool, calm and relaxed they both seemed lol
It's the theme of a lot of quality YA/coming of age stories? Being more normal than you think you are, or that being not normal is normal. And nobody who read Judy Blume books as a teenager, or Jacqueline Wilson in recent years, can not know this? And talking to other people who've had similar experiences/temperaments whom you have a good relationship with is also a good way to find that out. It doesn't mean we're all the same - or that some people don't get shit on worst by other people or by their own mental health or experiences otherwise. And it doesn't mean, knowing that, that we won't feel guilty or complicated about it.
Ikr? I developed a huge crush on her during my middle school age. So huge that I couldn't be attracted to any girl around me because obviously, no ordinary teenage girl can match her beauty. She set my expectation ridiculously high.
mabelxxxbsb very cute indeed :) Along with Jennifer Connelly she's probably my ideal woman. I'm surprised you haven't seen her recently since she's been in quite a few current movies.
We can all clearly see why Johnny Depp (and im sure many other actors and musicians etc) fell in love with her, she was so beautiful and wise and very open minded for her age, a natural beauty, i wish she was still getting the kinda roles she did back in the day, and married to Depp and had beautiful weird children together. She's still gorgeous though, she has an add campaign for a famous clothing brand recently and she looks just the same.
I am only nine days older than her and she had them all, all the hot guys of the 90s. I was very jealous :D. Let me try to recap all her men if I remember them correctly: Johnny Depp for sure, Matt Damon, Daniel Day-Lewis, Dave Pirner, Christian Slater, David Duchovny, Gary Oldman.... and I am sure some more I can not remember. :D
I love this interview. The interviewer asked some relevant and deep questions especially when it comes to teen coming of age movies because it is true that they aren't real and they are stereotyped into a good or bad teenager. I hate how interviews are about "what is it like to be working with this male co-star?" "Do you find him attractive?" "How hard was it to work out for your role?" Like interviews nowadays are solely about looks and appearances rather than the deeper meaning of films and why the film is the way it is. This interview shows the beauty that film is complicated and has a lot of parts to it that make this big, powerful meaning. For me, being a film major, I get tired of films being the same and not having any differences other than being a film about singing or dancing or this girl wants to find love. I love this interview and hope that interviews nowadays can be like this.
the interviewer was a true profissional, not trying to sound like a wise-ass comedian or something, which is mostly the case nowadays with interviewers asking irrelevant or plain dumb questions just for the sake of memes or views.
@@ldoeph2332 Do you know a website that can help me to know my keppe type? I think I'm a mix of classic and gamine, is it possible to be classic in body and gamine face wise?
@@gm.8805 I believe they met a few months before her 18th birthday, however they didn't starting dating till she was 18. So you can basically throw the whole grooming thing out the window.
@@yeeaahhzz There's nothing wrong with surgery but she didn't. Her nose is not smaller or different as it was in Beetlejuice or Heathers, when she was a teen.
I love Winona. She's a great role model for women and girls as she encourages you to be yourself. She also hasn't had any of this botox rubbish and she looks great for 44, I actually think botox makes you look older. And she's not on social media which is also a great thing as many people's lives just seem to be revolved around Twitter and Facebook, bit boring really. She just seems to have more depth to her than many other celebrities, she's also intelligent and genuinely has something interesting to say rather than just wanting to talk about her acting career. How can people call the Kardashian's great role models when you have someone like Winona? Makes no sense.
i like her even more when u see the real person vs the roles she plays. she's a shy, quiet, kinda dark personality which i love. she don't care about being famous and all that other bs that goes with show business which is so refreshing. she was so beautiful in mermaids and just a dark doe eyed beauty. kinda of a one and kind look really. she's such an amazing actress and just is killing it in the netflix "stranger things" series which is unbelievably good. "square dance" is my favorite, gemma dillard with the monroe forhead.
Since the "shopping incident", I've always thought she's had a raw deal, other actors eg Robert Downey Jr can commit more serious offences and have bigger drug problems but still have a complete career revival! Could it be because they are men? Yet again the double standards of society - after all, these born again "stars" can only make it back with the good graces of the general public! 🤔
Oh the early 1990's I wish I could go back , back then Winona was so natural, so unique , I cannot find an actress in this decade that can beat her magic.
Rachel Weisz, Marion Cotillard, Emily Blunt can easily beat Winona with talent and charm. And their beauty is REAL unlike hers. You can admire her as much as you wish just don`t be blind.
@@wonka3209 That's not what most people think, she's always been considered as one of the most beautiful women and one of the best actresses...just read the top comments. Her face is 100% natural but go off i guess. People compliment her and you feel the need to spread your negativity under their comments for no reason... someone is pressed and jealous.
@@welx4108 I`m not being negative. I said just what I`ve read somewhere: she had a rhinoplasty. Mb she had it in a very young age like Natalie Portman idk, but ...
6:51 - "I just kind of came out" Funny how that line got such a subdued response in a 90s talk-show in Britain but if it was on Jimmy Fallon today he would've burst out laughing.
Michale Graves damn you’re so original dude! Imagine not liking a popular thing! It’s super cool of you to talk trash about a thing that someone enjoys! You’re really breaking ground here my guy!!
1:19 that face. That smile. Such an interesting person - just finished watching Mr. Deeds and although I've seen that movie so many times, her performance in it gets me every time. So believable!!!
Winona Ryder is my favorite actress. She is so beautiful and talented. No one will ever be half as beautiful as Winona! You can't compare anyone to her.
@Chickenisoverrated Don't be sooooo bloody stupid!! You make it sound like what I sad was an insult which doesn't make sense! I even said There are plenty of women that are as beautiful as her-wether celeb or not that was my point. So what I said was still a compliment regardless! 🙄
@Chickenisoverrated And how the fuck did you work that out you cretin?? 😒 I made no insult whatsoever, how can you not know this already?? I said she is one of the best looking people celeb or not a celeb! TWAT
she’s so beautiful - just shows how you don’t need to keep up with these ‘ideal’ beauty standards. so many of the comments say she’s beautiful and half of you are probably as pretty, yet we all follow these unrealistic standards and get caught up in them :/ whilst she’s so natural which makes her beautiful
Background info: 1. As the host said she's 19 at the time of this interview (April 26, 1991) but later that year on October 29th she turned 20 years old. 2. "Mermaids" was released in North America in 1990 but it was released in Europe in 1991 this explains why she's there in the UK promoting it in '91. 3. After this Winona worked on a film called "Night On Earth" then took a 5 month break from the film industry due to mental exhaustion.
+Debei Cargando Oh my gosh you're absolutely right. They're so similar, they both share that 'far away' look in their eyes when they talk and kinda have the same mannerisms.
I remember that time in the late 80s and early 90s, girls didn't have dolled themselves up. there was less artificiality. it was pre-princess generation
I love Mermaids, it really is a charming movie, set in my favorite era too. Winona is so freakin gorgeous, I mean she has this plain blunt uncombed hair, a man's suit on and practically zero make-up and still is beautiful, and she doesn't even care about her looks which is even cooler. She puts 99% of the other so -called "hollywood beauties" to shame.
You know I never found her beautiful growing up, but I see here how stunning she is. I think now, looking back at her old movies, it was the hair colour changes I didn't like, such as blonde in Edward Scissorhands etc. She is unbelievably beautiful with black hair
..oh yeh totally calm and decent. Forget the fall of the soviet union, gulf war, Waco seige, Rodney King and the LA riots, the Bosnian genocide, rise of yuppy shit heads...Besides those things it was peaches and cream
@@VJ4rawr2 You're welcome. The 80s had extremely high crime. It's the reason we got media like Death Wish and Dirty Harry. In fact, murder rates PEAKED in the 80s. LOL, common civility. Gimme a break. The boomer mentality seems inevitable for every generation. You could be a hippy burning a bra in the 60s, and by the time you hit a certain age, it's "oh the good ol' days. When music was actually good and people were so kind and tolerant". You could be spray painting walls in with a punk mohawk in the 80s, but when you hit that certain age, "oh, the 80s! A time of civility!" LOL.
I love Winona!!! She has always been immensely talented and unique!!! She is genuine intelligent, and sensitive! A beautiful thing to be as an artist!!! Wishing her all the success in the world and sending her love and light alway!!! 🙏🕯❤️🕊👸🏻🧜🏻♀️🧛🏻♀️🎩🕶👛🦄🦋❄️
