He definitely would have. He reminds me of Ronald Reagan before there was Ronald Reagan. What is it that a lot of British and I guess Americans to that look at their history and judge it in such a Negative light. They were great men of their times. Churchill and Reagan would be disgusted with the leaderships and the state of our country of today. Reagan I think would be most upset with the media and the state of so-called journalism today. Our schools do not even teach about Thomas Paine or most of our founding fathers . I'd hate to think what Churchill would think about the British Parliament.

An incredible life . I can see from some of the other comments that not everyone can understand the past and it is rather fashionable these days to condemn Churchill. However consider the alternative in 1940 . He was a larger than life figure which nobody can afford to be today with an intrusive, vitriolic press and equally distasteful social media .

When I was a young soldier, I very surprisingly won Winstons book about WW !! in a card game organized by my unit. I was never fond of card games, but things happen, do they? In fact, nobody else wanted this book, but I did. I read it and was utterly astonished on his perception about Germany and Europe over decades. My parents for what reasons ever, never talked about their experiences in WW II. So this was how I learned about it first hand. I did much research on Winstons life and by today, I still cherish his book. It is in my bookshelf. Directly besides my desk, so I can always see it, there is the picture of Winston, also containing his words. "In war: resolution, In defeat: defiance, In victory: magnanimity, In peace: good will.” Without him, my life would most likely have been very miserable. Today I am a free man. This is what I ow to him. Winston and Ludwig van Beethoven became the examples of my life. This is a very fine documentary, providing much insight of a great man. Roland from good old Germany.

Churchill condemns himself in his own book. Over the Katyn Forest massacre. His letter to Eden shows he KNEW the Russians did it, but Churchill blamed it on the Germans. If you REALLY research into Churchill you will find he was drunk throughout the war. He was a coward. Bombing of civilians and destruction of their houses is a War Crime. There is nothing good I can say about that man. I spit on his grave.

Both my Grandfather's fought at the Battle of the Somme in WW1 and my father flew as a 19year old RAF pilot in WW2. I was brought up in the knowledge that without the decisive and brave leadership of Sir Winston Churchill during WW2, our nation of Great Britain, the land mass of Europe and the lives we have led would have been been very different under the tyrannical rule of fascism. Churchill was a flawed human being, as we all are, and made mistakes but he also showed great courage and bravery and rose to the challenges he faced. On balance I believe him to have been a great leader and I'm sure history willl remember him as such.

Having lived my early years (age 8-14 years) through World War Two, right in the heart of Britain and experiencing every air raid over Birmingham UK, I agree that he was a good leader. Let us not however forget those "few" in the 1940 Battle of Britain (still unsung except for statues) who during that early stage, amidst much harrassment from unexpected quarters, kept their cool and saved us from Nazi rule at that vital time early on in World War Two. I believe this was the Kingpin which held together the vital and necessary courage to continue. At the same time, our courage not giving into Fascism developed our patience, perseverance, resilience, selflessness, forward thinking and attention to detail etc which is still thankfully with me to-day.

Neville Chamberlains dithering during the rise of the Nazi party that got Britain into WW2. He resigned in 1940 a failure. Stalins armies and the bullets they soaked up in their Millions when Hitler got over confident and decided to fight on both the eastern and western front simultaneously, the later during the brutal Russian winter lost the Nazis the war. England by itself would be speaking German now if it wasn’t fir external help. Churchill drained resources from to Indian colonies to aid the war effort which almost bankrupted the nation caused the death of millions during the Bengal famine. Churchill love of warmongering and the limelight battle got him exiled from power for years after WW1 for being too radical. Yes I suppose he was great in terms of being bullish and a military man in the Boer war etc a possibly if he’d have been in power the Nazis may not have become such a strong force as they did in full view of the world albeit in the grips of the Great Depression of the 1930s after the stock market crash of 1929 but after his tenure it was clear Britain has lost its world dominating power to the US who couldn’t be bothered to get involved to protect the Nazis invading Britain and it was only after Pearl Harbour was bombed by Japan that they we drawn into the conflict. Not so great a legacy when you look at those facts. Anyone feels they should correct my words feel free. I’m always willing to learn. 🤙🏾

As an American, I will forever be grateful for Churchill's resilient leadership in WW2. If Britain had sued for peace, the USAAF wouldn't have been able to perform strategic bombing against Germany, and conversely, Hitler would've been that much closer to striking US soil. You cannot judge historical figures by today's norms. He was such a pwerhouse, he guided England through one of the most awful part of their history. I never knew he was awarded a Nobel prize, well deserved I think! I am an Irish national and have spent all my life from 13 months old in England. My Dad left Dublin for England in 1959 as a qualified carpenter and it took months for him to find a place to live, because there were so many signs that said "no blacks, no Irish and no dogs". This is honestly true. My Dad just persevered, and we came over. But my Mom and Dad just tried to fit in. In the late 60s and early 70s a lot of corner shops were taken over or opened by Indian or Pakistani families, so we would talk about going to the Paolo shop. I know, don't swallow your teeth with outrage, but that was what we said. Do I deserve to be punished for saying that in the 70s? No, I don't think so. For saying it now, absolutely! It makes me so very angry when historical people are judged by today's norms and because I have been honest I hope I don't get poo on my head. For the era he lived in he was a good man. Before you throw have at people understand the cultural norms of their day. Thank you for a very informative video, truly.

Winston was a product of his times. It would be unfair to judge him by the standards of this day and age. Having said that, he did starve my family members to death in Kolkata. Murdered and tortured countless young men fighting for my freedom. I feel I took the only sensible course of action I could reasonably be expected to follow and named my dog after him. He is a very good boy.

Actually, the Bengal Famine had a number of causes, among which were the number of refugees from Japanese held areas, the inability to import food from those same areas, stockpiling by hoarders and, perhaps worst of all, the Bengal administration, which tried to minimise the crisis. The worst that could be said of Churchill was that he should have known what was taking place, but didn't. After all, in 1943, he had little else to worry about. You could also add the refusal of FDR to allow the transfer of merchant shipping, by the way. What is without dispute, except by those who choose to blame Churchill for everything since the Black Death, is that once he did find out, he transferred food distribution to the British Indian Army, and had grain convoys diverted from Australia to India. I appreciate, of course, that you won't believe any of this, as it doesn't suit the agenda.

He was such an endearing character. Read the book Clementine Churchill. The woman behind the man. They shared sweet love notes. They had a drain put in the bathroom floor as Churchill loved to slosh and splash in the tub. He dabbled in bricklaying and at night the tradesmen would go out and straighten his work. He liked to lounge in the nude. He enjoyed painting as a hobby. I thought his son Randolf was so sad had addictions and gambling debts. They had some rough years financially. The Bengal famine was one of the worst humanitarian disasters of the 20th century and directly resulted from Churchill's policies. His refusal to provide aid and his diversion of food shipments away from India contributed to the deaths of millions of people.

Interesting how people can change in a time of crisis. Churchill went from worrying about the treatment of the defeated enemy to sinking the French Fleet to keep it from German hands.

More so lack of conviction when needing to defend your country in a time of war. Might also be partly due to Germans being provided with “necessary resources” which were used to create war machines for WW2

Look up his Trilogy . I used to have it in Hard back I Donated it to a History teacher. I figured she could put it to good use better than keeping it to myself. One of the book titled The Gathering Storm comes to mind. My family is Dutch and WWII survivors.

I am currently reading The Gathering Storm. It is the first book that I've read by Winston. Despite its length and density it is encouraging me to read more by this political giant.

My respects for donating to education, I’m sure she will put it to good use. My Dutch ancestors fought in the Revolution of the 13 Colonies, probably against my British ancestors. Hope you are well.

Churchill was a natural leader and despite his failings to which All Human is Heir …His personality and diverse achievements on so many fronts commands respect gratitude and appreciation …there’s been nobody else to emulate him in my lifetime and I Laud him for ALL his beneficial endeavours for global mankind ….We need someone to teach Putin a lesson.

if this man was alive today he would be dubbed all types of names "sexist" "misogynst", ect but this is the type of man needed to fight the evil of nazism . none of the weak willed leaders we have today could have handled WW2

@@flowersinawasteland Ironically, that quote is one of the only smart things Churchill said. The other was that they shouldn't have fought Germany, but instead fought the Soviets. Seriously though - imagine using the expression _"the evil of nazism"_ unironically.... /cringe

It is the nature of greatness, that it never fits comfortably into those tidy little, if arbitrary, boxes, approved of by the politically correct of any given age. By just about any metric you care to mention, Sir Winston Churchill strode like a giant across the landscape of world history. A Gulliver among the Lilliputians.

"Don't drink or smoke, it's bad for your health." ...Churchill drinks and smokes all day every day and lives to be 90? He was probably sort of embalmed from all the booze, that's why he lived so long 🤣 Great show BTW thanks!

When comparing Sir Winston to subsequent and modern day Prime Ministers his gravitas and statesmanship is unrivalled. What a fantastic documentary charting one of this country’s greats. Many know his name but not much else so this informative documentary was a excellent watch. Thank you.

A good wartime leader and a stalwart for his country during the war.But also apparently a rather crap peacetime MP and PM. Thus he would not have been out of place in todays British government

It's unfair that Churchill still gets blame for the Gallipoli campaign which was run by the War Office under Kitchener. Churchill was head of the Navy and the Naval only Dardanelles campaign came within a whisker of success before it was called off. Troops had they aided the Naval campaign would also have swung it in their favour but Kitchener refused to supply them until it was too late. And let's not forget that the Commission looking into the Gallipoli failure exonerated Churchill. Churchill's advocacy of 'chemical weapons' during the Iraqi uprising was limited to the use of 'tear gas' instead of bullets and bombs and was a humane policy. Churchill was not responsible for the Bengal famine but when it came to his attention he acted decisively to end it.
