Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years, 1929-39

This is a companion documentary to my earlier upload "The Forgotten Years". It tells the story of Churchill's political errors in the 1930s, chiefly over independence for India and tariff reform. It is excellent material for the student of both the man and the turbulent era of the 1930s. The video quality is not particularly good, so my apologies for that, but the archive footage is excellent. Uploaded for educational purposes only. Comments are welcome, but any coarse language or aggressive assertions will be deleted immediately.

In the mini-series, Churchill, The Wilderness Years, they portrayed the leaking of information on Germany as very clandestine. The English Civil Servant was sneaking documents out at night for Churchill to copy and sneaking them back into the file the next morning. MI-5 suspects the civil servant and Churchill but is always 1 step behind and 1 step to slow.

Underlying all of Churchill's traits is the extreme loyalty and love of the monarchy plus the idea of empire. He never could reconcile this love with his ideas about democracy that abhors a monarchy. I truly believe this is what gets Britain into trouble; they want to be a democracy but they still want to keep their queen and state church.

There's nothing you can't learn about the present and future by learning from the past. People are still the same as before. There are still people today that don't believe there are others that want to take your rights from you. That's why life cycles goes around in circles and not forward.

When Winston was born, lots of fairies swooped down on his cradle with gifts; Imagination, eloquence, industry, ability. And then came a fairy that said, "No one person has a right to so many gifts," picked him up and gave him such a shake and twist that of all these gifts he was denied judgement, and wisdom.

Glosses over (or omits) Churchill's role as First Lord of the Admiralty in the disastrous Dardanelles campaign in WW1. It made him an outcast in the government. His election loss in 1945 can probably be attributed to the fact that the public held the Tories responsible for allowing Britain to deteriorate as a world power (prior to the war) to the point that it was under direct attack by 1940.

“If Russia is to be saved, as I pray she may be saved, she must be saved by Russians. It must be by Russian manhood and Russian courage and Russian virtue that the rescue and regeneration of this once mighty nation and famous branch of the European family can alone be achieved. Russia must be saved by Russian exertions, and it must be from the heart of the Russian people and with their strong arm that the conflict against Bolshevism in Russia must be mainly waged.” -Winston Churchill, Mansion House, London, 19 February 1919

There was no money for poor Russians (actually, they were Ukrainians, Armenians, Georgians, White Russians and many others, all fighting for freedom from Moscow). en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Year_Rule I'm sure they appreciated the...ahem..."hopes and prayers". But then again, it wasn't Churchill's fault that the "winners" of Versailles were busy renunciating the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, the ONLY thing which had kept the commies relatively weak up to that point in time...

Churchill's American mother often demanded that he should make his mark on the world, he used every means to do so, but establishment often see only one side of him, not seeing his vices. Churchill caused much disaster for other nations, even for UK. in 1941 he removed Reza shah, and had meeting with Rosevelt to sell UK to US... Over years to later... However, we have to plan for a benevolent global authority - so that all nations can be safe.

edwardpf123 India obviously. He was a brutal racist. At the time when Leo Amery, at the time, a member of perliament also marshall of India, while having a conversation, Winston Churchill simply stated "I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion". To which Leo Amery made a note stating he sees no difference in Churchill's view to that of Hitler. When British administration in India requested for food to help millions of Indians dying due to starvaation (the food shortage that was caused by exploitation)(Not exactly food shortage but failure in distribution as they were shipped elsewhere following Churchill's demand hat India exports rice supported by food production 2years before the event) the exploitation (rising food prices due to inflation)(rice export) never stopped. Ghandi sent letters to Nazi Germany (Hitler) showing his sympathy showing great mistrust to British claims about Nazi Germany. But anyway, just realised u commented 9 months ago, probably none of your interest at this stage.

Most people know Winston Churchill as the “British Bulldog,” the Prime Minister who led Great Britain to victory in World War II. But a lesser-known story is that he lived way over his means. He couldn't have afforded the house, the servants, the drinking, the cigars, etc on a government official's salary, let alone when he was out of office. Strangely, no one ever heard of any financial difficulties and he never filed for bankruptcy. Could he have been helped? Could that explain his strange behavior? Did he have friends in high places, rich friends? Possibly... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FDhy5uWPVDM.html

One of the greatest public figures ? A hero , a warrior , a human and a great Briton . No other man in history has shown how weakness and ebullience can produce a man that perfectly fitted his people and his time . Without him Britons might never stand against a powerful Germany, with him we knew we were in weakness only accepting the strength that faith provides, losers with a winning spirit , the weak finding strength those without hope only reaching upwards to find God already reaching down . Now piss off those that want to destroy his lefaxcy BBC traitirs.

Just the very old, financially effective and immoral imperialism as expressed by Cecil Rhodes: "We must find new lands from which we can easily obtain raw materials and at the same time exploit the cheap slave labor that is available from the natives of the colonies. The colonies would also provide a dumping ground for the surplus goods produced in our factories."

Ralph Bernhard Well she made it appear that he did not have a point. His positions were not politically correct then and even more so now but he was broadly correct. He thought more of a multipartisan approach rather than relying on Ghandi alone. He thought that provincial rule should come first. I think that that should have happened earlier. Read his speeches. I found around 20:00 or so very interesting. In brief, Churchill did not understand India. The people of Britain figured this out and it was this that caused them to discredit him. My belief is that that will not happen in today's America. Truth and knowledge are nowhere in any political conversation or debate today in America. And the American people could not tell fact from fiction or falsehoods from truth even if the political debate happened by chance upon a gram of truth or a glimmer of fact. Indeed, politicians in America (both sides) use exactly the same lies that they have been using for more than two decades and Americans (both sides) still kling to them.

its hard to figure out the truth when all we have are lies from the mainstream media all the way down to the internet. we have to question whether or not quotes are real these days. even the translations into english news reports and documentaries have been shown as bogus. i don't think that anybody in the world really knows if they are getting factual information anywhere either. we are all in the dark to a certain degree.

England equally at the height of the industrial revolution had a large number of the populace steeped in poverty, yet as its human and capital to labour ratio expanded income grew and England became a high income society. Naturally as well india as it continues on its current trajectory of capital and technology accumulation may even surpass Britain not in GDP alone but per capita output given its market size. England's economic growth was tied closely to exploitation of its empire by setting up extractive institutions tenured towards industry at home. Thus England may be a top OECD country but India's eventual growth would certainly not come at the expense of subjugating others. The upheaval of english imperialism are still being felt.
