Hotokegaura is a scenic spot on the western coast of the Shimokita Peninsula in the northern Aomori Prefecture of Japan.
These unusually shaped, wave-eroded natural formations are made of green volcanic tuff and reach up to 90 meters in height. In 1975, the Hotokegaura Cliffs and surrounding waters, which stretch approximately 1.5 kilometers along the Pacific coast, were included in the Shimokita Hantō Quasi-National Park. They were recognized as a natural monument by Aomori Prefecture in 1934, and on April 23, 1941, they became a national treasure of Japan.
