Backpacking the Monongahela National Forest's Pocahontas and North Forth Trails. Temperatures got down well below freezing. We had a great time and all of our gear kept us warm down to 16 degrees / -8 degrees. This video will show you how we stayed warm and the struggles that came with hiking the trail during the winter months. I've actually had to stop and turn around on this one twice before so I knew going in this trip again that anything could happen.

@@vafrog02 cold soaking is non-cook method of preparing food. You just add water early in the day and let you meal soak, and you eat it cold when it rehydrates. The joke was .... he pulled a DRY biscuit sandwich out of his pot and called it cold soaked.

Man, I could almost feel that cold when you got up in the morning! I’ve car-camped all my life, but now I’m gearing up to start my first backpacking trips this summer (I don’t have cold weather gear yet). I can’t wait I’m from Erie, so I’m thinking Minister Creek or near Tracy Ridge in the ANF for the first couple. I’ve hiked both areas before, but never backpacked them. I’ve been gaining a ton of knowledge from your videos...thanks!

Morrison is a great early summer hike. Swimming in the river outcrop. Calm terrain.

@Chris Con Morrison is a great trail for a beginner. Be aware that they put some stupid reroute in and if you're going counter clockwise and following a GPS app, you won't be be following the old trail. The reroute is asinine. I have no idea why they did it.

If you want to start fires easier...put a base (dry if you can) of sticks to insulate the fire above it from the ground. Moisture from the ground evaporates and steams and puts out your fire

I admire anyone who can camp, hike, etc in cold weather. You guys are strong!! I know it’s personal preference to wear hiking shoes versus boots, but in snow, do you think you’d be warmer in waterproof boots?

On the first day absolutely. Once my feet start sweating and soaking the inner liner, then no. This was my major problem before I switched to trail runners in 6 inches or less of snow. If we're talking feet of snow I'd probably wear boots, but I'm not a big fan of hiking in a lot of snow.

Ha was eating trailmix and dropped a raisin inside my camera. The protective shutter was a little wet from dew and ceased up so the raise just fell in the camcorder lense tube.

Your cold soaking game is strong. I legit lol'd. Thanks a bunch for pointing out your cause of cold butt syndrome. I love when your videos have a bunch of adventure with a good amount of tips and takeaways and gear shots thrown in. Can you tell me why your hammock has a head and foot end? In my hammock setup, if I lay on the opposite side, the only thing that really changes is that the zipper door would be on my opposite side. Which is neither good or bad. Is it maybe to do with the pull outs? I would imagine that hooks for the pull outs would be rotationally symmetric and work just as well as foot or head pull outs. Thanks a bunch.

Bring some Everclear and a tin can. Excellent fire starter. If your fire doesn't take off, save enough Everclear and you won't care. 😁

Great video, I hope to head back out here soon. I did Chimney Rocks late last year with my daughter. I appreciate the cold weather tips with the UQ and frozen water bottle. Are you considering the extra 6-8 oz for a batoning knife or hatchet maybe next time for cold wet weather? I debated for a while, but have never regretted carrying the extra tool weight.

Frozen, have you tried the down version of the pillow? I have the same kind you do, been wondering if the down one might be better for winter, seems like it packs down into the same sized bag. Give consideration to trying the pillow upside down (not valve up) sometimes I feel like having the cutout for your neck on top supports the sides of my head better (not fully inflated of course.)

I've heard of it yea. I'm sure.its great. In a hammock at least I find this pillow to be perfect in really any temps but that's also with the underquilt wrap up around it. Might be different in a tent so the down one may be the way to go.

@@FrozensAdventures I suppose if you were using a partial underquilt the down one might be better. If you can find it (REI seems to have stopped carrying it right after I got it) the Klymit inflatable sitpad/pillow makes a nice pillow to put under your knees if you need something there.

I feel it helps to mix the chemicals and agitate the pressure a little better in cold weather.

@@garyontheat1850 I just got the duplex myself. On the head and foot ends there's two tie out one about a foot above the other. I think if you want to get the ends up even higher than you would with the lower ones The cord came attached to the lower ones so for now I'm keeping them there. Assuming you could even attach more cord to those and tie them up to a tree as well.
