So many people you see with all the gear and no idea. It's about the right tools for the job too. If you are doing multi day long distance treks over hilly ground, weight also is something to factor into your choices.

Thanks for your great advice. Wish I saw this before cycling across the Canadian Rockies in October. By trial and error I managed to survive and came to the same conclusion as your video. Aldi wool t-shirt, Aldi wool long Johns, Aldi merino thin pullover. Despite freezing at the front and sweating on my back whilst riding, the wool breathed wonderfully and my Aldi ‘gortex’ ski shell with detachable synthetic parka serve wonderfully when stopping to rest. My only concession to name brands was Icebreaker midlayer top I picked up later in a second hand shop at ski village for $20 Canadian.

Greetings from Philadelphia. Great and exhaustive outdoor apparel tutorial. Good reference for DIY smock or anorak out of a standard issue woolen blanket.

I buy nearly all my gear from military surplus stores. Both the used ones and the outdoor newly made gear dependent on price and size. I am rather big just over 2 meters and not all gear comes in my size. Dutch surplus does but not always. In summer i wear a coyote tan smock parka and in winter a olive green lined M-65 parka, the lining can be detached.

Great video. I use 3 layers in the 3 seasons and 4 in the winter. You really helped me in deciding which layer should be what. That being said I am going to try and get several thin layers and see how that works for me in my area.

Great Advice Neil .. thanks 👍😊. Yep, quality Military Surplus in good nick is a cost effective option. I have taken to looking at the material composition .. reading labels and product descriptions as opposed to just the name brand. It's quite sobering .. the price difference in identical items, cloth wise, dependent on the 'Brand Name'. Ok, maybe build quality may differ regarding buttons etc, but then I usually 'beef' up buttons and such beforehand regardless. Take care ..

Maybe we all need to look at the labels?

Good video. I find military surplus is hard to beat it’s good quality and cheap, wool commando jumper, windproof smock, softie suit add in a cheap lightweight fleece and the merino wool base layers all good stuff 👍

My stuff is probably near the £2000's these days not the £200's. With a few mistake buys thrown in. But it's good for everyone to have this experience so to make the UK a better nation, so well done on the video, there's hope for the poor old UK yet. I did the budget thing way back when---mid teens onwards with the army surplus, only differents? A little bit heavier and lack of streamline comfort. It's not the gear, it's the person behind the gear that counts.

@@greencraft4783/NEIL, May even purchase a patch! Shipping is cheaper than a patch from USA and Canada! Go figure. I will make an owl bookmark as soon as I get out in the woods. Here we have very active ticks of various species that carry nasty diseases besides Lyme. I use to wear wool pants in the Fall, now with the ticks I've switched to easily washable/drying in dryer fabrics. Just when you kit gets right the environment changes!

Niel, it might be worth saying that the layers need to be somewhat loose fitting. If you put on several layers than a snug outer layer, you defeat the purpose of layers by squeezing the air out. I am a size xl so I have my base layers size xl, my midlayers are size 2xl and my outer layers are 3xl. I look like the stay puff marshmallow man but I stay warm. The same is true for socks and boots. If they fit to snug, you reduce circulation and result in colder feet than warmer. My winter boots are a full size larger than my summer hikers. This gives me room for 2 pairs of socks and my boots are not to snug.

Bloody hell I’d be blowing the vents with that lot on 🤣 I can get by with a T shirt and my Lester river Boreal bush shirt in mid winter Uk I throw a wax canvas watch coat over the top in wet weather

If I am active (moving, sawing, chopping, shelter building and the like) I wear similar. Teaching spoon carving or cordage making is sedentary by comparison and the layers are needed. The video hopefully covers the spectrum needed in the many faceted world of bushcraft. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Like your videos thanks very informative. 👍🏻. Very helpful as kit is expensive and if you have no knowledge of what kit to buy or wear. Thanks alot. Bet you hate Ray mears and his expensive clothing range. And you have been doing bush craft maybe longer than him. Move over Ray 😆👍🏻 🔥⛺️🌲

Great video Neil, I really enjoyed it, it was very interesting & very informative 👍 I'd still like to buy one of your jackets (but I know you don't sell them anymore 😢) I need to know what type of sewing machine I would need to buy (if you could help me out with that, that would be great) take care, stay safe & ATB my friend 🙂🥃👍 Andy

That would be great if you made yourself one. You just need a basic machine (you can get them second hand quite often, mine is a Pfaff).
