Join Mike & I as we Attempt to Winter Camp in a Snow Trench at -15° F, Deep in the Woods of the White Mountains. www.sintax77.com
For this winter backpacking & Snow Camping adventure, we’ll be heading into the austere terrain of the Dry River Wilderness in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
For an easier read, check out my full blog post here: www.sintax77.com/winter-campin...
Our main challenge for this adventure will be to sleep without the comforts of a tent of hammock. Our goal is to use bivvy sacks to protect our sleeping bags from the elements as well as extend the range of our sleeping bags. The latter of which is of particular importance because we’ll be packing in sleeping bags rated for around 15° to 20° F, in temperatures of around -15° F.
Our secondary objective will be to hit the summit of Mt Crawford, replete with stunning, 360° views of the White Mountains. Oh, and we’ve got some pretty fun backpacking food on the menu as well. We’ll be camp cooking all “real food” on this trip, thanks to the sub-zero temps, no traditional dehydrated backpacking food.
Topics Covered in this Episode:
Winter Campsite selection, via topographical maps, and well …pure luck.
Winter camping snow shovels (see gear list below for further details)
The complications of cooking backpacking food in sub-zero winter conditions.
Digging a winter camping shelter in the snow, along with tarp setup, should you be lucky enough to have one available (we did).
Building a fire on top of snow (not nearly as hard as you might think it is - even on the 6+ feet of snow that we had to deal with).
Sleeping in a snow trench with a SOL Escape Bivvy sack.
The balance of hitting a winter summit, versus well, not eating, hydrating or, you know - surviving.
Trailhead Parking:
Davis Path Trailhead, Crawford Notch Rd, Bartlett, NH 03812
44°07’08.1″N 71°21’15.1″W
GPS Data for this trip is available in the above blog post or on the Trip Data Page of my website. www.sintax77.com/trip-data/
Stats & Trails Used, Day One:
Park at Davis Path Trailhead.
Head norht on the Davis Path Trail.
Setup camp in the flat area found around 2,500′ along the Davis Path Trail.
Day 1 Mileage: 2.0 miles
Day 1 Elevation Gain: 1,725′
Stats & Trails Used, Day Two:
Wake up, get a campfire going, and cook some soup for breakfast to get fueled up.
Grab some essential items (snacks, water, camera gear) and leave the majority of gear at camp to keep things fast and light for the upcoming high winds summit attempt.
Rejoin Davis Path Trail and head north.
At the junction, take the Mt Crawford Spur Trail, towards the summit of Mt Crawford.
Head back down the same way, to return to base camp and pack up the bulk our remaining items.
Day 2 Mileage: 3.1 miles
*0.65 miles to the summit of Mt Crawford, 2 miles from camp to the Davis Path Trailhead Parking Lot.
Day 2 Elevation Gain: 974′
Trip Totals:
Total Elevation Gain: 2,699'

Guys, the 'chinking of mugs' dates back to mediaeval times when you would hit the mugs together with your host so that some would splosh into each other's container as a sign of trust that neither was poisoned!

As a bartender, we always cheers those around us first then tap the shot glass on the table/bar before drinking as a second cheers to those who couldn't join us that evening, and for those who are no longer with us. I'm sure there are dozens of opinions but that one always seemed legit to me. Great vid as always guys

I think all the liquid fuel stoves do it to some extent. My dragonfly does it too. Probably from the temperature variation when the fuel vaporizes.

Sounds like WWII footage of a German V1 flying over a British city... I had an MSR XGK back in the 1980s. Heavy, but hot and bulletproof. The sound is the fuel hitting the burner plate and igniting in little droplets. The Whisperlite, which I still use in winter, has a different burner head. The XGK had a "splatter plate", I believe it was called.

I used to use my Black Diamond Megamid in the winter in the Whites. 9 x 9 floorless pyramid with ski poles and skis in the corners then digging out a sleep bench/trench and cold sump then blocking the “door” with my backpack. Snow shovels are a MUST in the winter. I loved my GT Bivi sack (pad inside so I didn’t slide off it) Now I use 2 pads. Good video! White gas or kerosene is the only way to go in sub-zero temps. Carry extra when you have to melt snow.

I was on Mt Washington (around 6:30/6:40 they mentioned they were using a higher summit’s forecast: I assume that was the nearby Mt Washington with life saving daily weather reports from the Summit observatory) with those 75-95mph winds and 100+ mph gusts a few weeks ago and it sounds bad but really it’s insane. The wind nearly blew us off lions head trail and the 4-6 feet of snow above tree line wasn’t helping but we just barely made it to the summit before 1:45pm, which was the last point that we wanted to be up their because of a steep hike down and the 4:25pm sunset that day

You know you guys made a good point and I had thought I was loosing my marbles. I recently camped just a week or two ago ( temps around 0 F ) and I tried laying up while in my bag ( i have a heavy, -25 bag good for car camping though I do hike with it and pull it on a sled too) and I felt colder! It was just like your buddy claimed, the bag wasn't getting heated up by my body so I was actually colder. I stripped back down to just long underwear and felt massively warmer again so I will never layer up while winter camping again. Trust the bag to do the work for you, so long as it's rated colder than what your sleeping in. I would say everyone should do the experiment. I have a feeling it depends on your bag for sure. I know I can't layer up and stay as warm in mine. It wasn't even close. It really blew my mind because normally when not sleeping, the more layers I put on, of course the warmer I become. It just wasn't the case inside my bag. I can't say I even totally understand that. I was just amazed. I came to the same conclusion your buddy did though, the sleeping bag is designed differently than clothing and it needs your body heat to work correctly. Again, I'm sure the material is going to determine that. TETON Sports Fahrenheit XXL -25F Sleeping Bag Size: 90" x 39" Pack Weight: 10.5 lbs. Temperature Rating: -25˚F Shell: Ripstop Liner: 100% Cotton Flannel Fill: SuperLoft Elite Hollow Fiber

I know I'm commenting 3 years later but... I bought a SOL emergency tent instead of the bivy. I figured it's essentially the same thing but larger. I’ve been doing shots for decades. I’ve never, nor have I seen anyone hit the bar with the glass first. Rookies who aren’t used to hitting a shot of booze will sometimes slam it on the bar afterward to let everyone know it was a personal achievement to get it down. Happy drinking.

As a kid when my grandpa would take me ice fishing, unbeknownst to my mom until years later, my grandpa would spike my thermos of hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps. 2 shots in a full thermos. Have never thought about the tapping of glasses before taking a drink or tapping of glasses on tables before taking a drink. At age 63, I was not alive in the medieval period, so I have not been accustomed to table-knocking/tapping practice and don’t worry about poison in my drink before I have the first sip. Despite having some Irish and English on my blood, I still haven’t experienced this knocking thing. I grew up in MI, and we just started drinking with or without a “clink” but no “clunk.” So, I guess you can research this or just observe the practice at a bar in order to get more data. Anymore mind-boggling unimportant questions, Mike? How about a puzzling, inquisitive question about mountain hiking? Just kidding. Love your videos, the both of you!

When I go hiking I go for comfort and don't worry about all this super light weight packing. Before I ever go I train with a 60lb bag and get use to caring that much weight. So when I do go and if my pack is under 60 which it usually is only around 25 to 40lbs so I'm good on caring weight. But Mike bag is real loaded and high up in the air. I see he is use to carrying the weight. Love your videos so keep them up

We clink the glasses and say Skol. and that means cheers, good health, salute, or a toast in Swedish Norwegian Danish and Icelandic. Never heard of pounding it on the table.

I'm interested in seeing a more detailed video about your winter clothing set-up and layering philosophy for different temperatures when on the move vs when in camp or taking breaks. What would you wear in 20-30, 10-20, 0-10, and sub-zero degree environments. What if it's snow, freezing rain, fog, windy with the wind chill etc. At what point would you call the trip and not go? Last year I remember a day in winter where it was - 40 degrees below at the base of the mountain and canceled my trip because of the huge risk to frostbite. Lastly- one of the most challenging things that I've come across when winter hiking in the white mountains is that when you're doing work uphill and you are trying to maintain that fine line of not over-heating while simultaneously not freezing. I'm hoping to push my limits this winter but at the same time be as safe as I can about it and it would be interesting to see your take on these topics. I give you guys props. It takes so much effort to film in regular backpacking weather let alone the conditions that you faced for this trip. Hope to see you up in the white mountains again for a winter trip! If you havent done it yet - I highly reccomend the baldface loop on the border of new Hampshire and Maine - open summits some challenging climbing and scenic views and under 12 miles- reccomended going clockwise to get the cliffs out of the way first so you don't have to go down them.

The cheers is the glass tapping together - cheers to each other in attendance. The tapping of the bar or counter or table - I have had 2 different reasons. The first is cheers to those who are not present or no longer with you or second cheers to the maker.
