We take our Land Rovers, one with snow chains, and go off roading and winter overlanding in Norway in horrible snow conditions. The team cars, Land Rover Defender 110 and Range Rover Classic 2 door handles it surpricingly well. But getting to the camp site would prove to be a bigger challenge than expected. Winter offroad, winter camping and campfire cooking. :)
In this part you will see us putting on snow chains and trying to get up to the camp site. And at the end you will see the reward for the struggle.
Team cars:
Simon Schybaj Mastermo
2000 Defender 110 - 2.5 TD5 - Center diff lock
Erik Iversen
1976 Range Rover Classic - 2 door - 3.5L V8 - Center diff lock
Tires (same order):
Goodyear Ultragrip ice - Studded winter tires
Cooper STT pro - MT tires
Land Rover Defender 110 vs Range Rover Classic
Center Diff lock vs Center Diff lock
Winter studded tires vs Mud terrain tires

Thanks man for your great support! 😀 I know it's fun when I can't stop smiling when I'm filming the RRC. The TD5 is running great but I think I will do some mods to the exhaust in the future. 😀 More of the good stuff. 😉

Great vid guys. love watching them. I have the same problem with the chains grabbing the mud gaurds on my old 60 land cruiser. and did notice that the snow would pack only into the center treads of the tires on the defender. maybe ty going down about 8psi on the tires. sometimes this is hard to see, and I find myself looking back at the footage between runs to see if this is happening, and adjust from there. This may be common knowlage but for those who may not know. The small cuts in snow tires or siping, are made to collect snow and hold it into the tread, rubber has poor traction on snow, but anyone who has rolled a big snowball for a snowman can tell you that snow has great traction against itself. that is if the snow is not dry and like suger. as was the case here. Oh and by the way. what a great tent. is it patterned after a Sami house? Keep them coming guys, will be looking for part 2, that is for sure.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 5 лет назад
Hey and thanks! Really appreciate the great feedback, the tips and that you are following us! 👍😀 The size/length of the chains was not optimal, so there was some slack in them making them catch, but the tires are on the limit on what can fit in there with the chains on aswell. 😀 But so much fun, just glad it didn't rip it open. 😱 Snow in the center treads, when you say it I know exactly whitch shot you speaking of. And commen knowlage, maybe for the 5% the people driving cars. Haven't thinked about it like that, the tires holding the snow, snow agains snow gives the traction. But it's so logical, and the snowman reference, just perfect! 😀👍 I have just written to Steve that I was running about 14.5 PSI and that I need to go lower next time, will try out 8psi next time. I was afraid to pop a bead when it was so cold. The snow was semi solid under the powder and that turend into suger aftre driving through it, so not great conditions for driving in. Then tent is proboly based on a Sami house, really common in Norway for people that want to camp longer than a day in one place. It's not optimal for winter camping as it don't hold any heat in. Better with a smaller tunnel tent with a inner tent, it keeps the body heat in. 👍 So glad you liked it and part 2 will be as good or even better. 😉
@tombrown879

just a note. depending on the type of tire, and sidewall . sometimes you may have to go up in pressure to get the best contact patch , this is where looking back at the camera footage after each adjustment will come in handy.

It helps if you air down to 10-12 psi and put chains on all four wheels. Or you could just mount a plow on the front and push right through.

We aired down a lot, about 12-14 psi, but the snow was horrible. Snow chains on all weels would have been fun to see and we will make that video next winter I think. Thanks for watching! More to come so rememeber to subscribe. :)

@@LandRoverDrive No doubt, snow is a lot more difficult to drive in than four wheelers dealing with just rocks and dirt realize. I am originally from Maine, and have years of experience driving LR's off road,; it's pretty easy to get stuck in snow even with chains, especially if it varies in its consistency. I really enjoy watch your videos (from Hawaii) about your LR's, Cheers.

Thanks for the new video. The chains really make a lot of difference. The Classic was impressive. I thought I read once that Land Rover recommended putting chains on the front wheels if you only had one pair. Ever hear of that? I just got back home on April 6 after driving 2300 miles from La Paz, Mexico to Chilliwack, BC, in my 24 foot motorhome. Ten days of Driving and four days of stopping along the way. Driving my Range Rover is going to be sooooo much nicer but I think I will take a rest from driving for a few days. Stay warm.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 5 лет назад
You are so welcome! So glad you liked it. The chains just worked great in these conditions and the Classic never stops impressing me. I haven't heard of that, but I maybe has something to do with ice and stearing. I know when driving on Ice you can have them both at the front because of the weight distribution. Will do some research about it and check it. 😉 Motorhome, nice! I usally have one trip a year where I take my family in my parents motorhome, really perfect for going on longer trips. And we always free camp so we can enjoy the sights. Ten days of driving is enough for a while. But switching over to the RR is be a huge difference. 😀👍 Always fun to get back the Land Rover. Spring is here so we are seeing positive numbers now. 👍😉

Hehe, I get your point. Usally the lowest we get here in the middle of Norway is around -15 to -16. But I grew up further north with -20 to -30. 👍😀 2 weeks ago I was snowmobile overlanding in Sweden with the lowest temperature of -24. 😉 But as it had been a while since i've had been out winter camping it was a good start and we learned a lot. 🙂 It actually got me to do some extra preparation before the snowmobile trip and I'm so glad I did. :) What kind of temperatures do you see where you live?
@mrcvry
@mrcvry 5 лет назад
Land Rover Drive Saw a yt video about the cold weather in America. In the USA the pipes were bursting and people in panic. Same time in Canada the people were digging snow in t-shirt or topless because it was so warm with just -20°. 😉 Yesterday we had sunny 20° but the next days 10-15 again.

The space on the upper inner side was so limited so we could not get it on, so it ended up being easier taking the wheel of first. 👍
@Coordinator61
@Coordinator61 3 года назад
Like all you guys do but you are still using that horrible bottle jack from the Range Rover and take the whole wheel off to put the chains on. There are easier ways to get snow chains on. Get some good Weiseenfels chains, easy fit with tires on the ground. Plus chains on all 4 wheels is the best in rough terrain and snow, i use it a lot while off-roading.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 3 года назад
The old bottle jack was for fun to show it like it used to be. Original RRC with the original defender army chains and the original jack. We have still not testet with chains on all four wheels on the RRC, I have done it on my Discovery 3. Was a beast. Need to do a proper video on chains I think. Will check out your tip on chains. 👍🙂

Also, I was wondering about airing down, would that have helped?
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 5 лет назад
I aired down to around 1 bar/14.5 PSI, but I think I need to go even lower. In this conditons, not like the previous videos, I think narrow MT tires would have been the best, slicing through the snow and finding grip down below. 😀👍 I think Erik aired down too, but I down remember the pressure. We aired down before putting on the chains.

Have you guys ever herd of chain tighteners? Also you do not have to remove tires to put on chains
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 5 лет назад
Hey, there are manual tighteners on the chains, and we probably should have tightened them some more after driving a bit. Don't know of any other chain tighteners though. 🙂 With the bigger size tires there is basically no room to get the chains fasten and tightened up on the upper inside of the wheel arch, so that's why we took the wheels of. 👍😀 If you have some tips and tricks let us know, we are out there learning. 😉

@@LandRoverDrive You drape the chaines over the tire, then secure the chain. Then you use chain tighteners to pull the chain tight. The ones I use are like a big rubber band with five hooks. They would go on the outside of the wheel. You might be able to find a video.
