I live in Canada as well and the packable down vest (actually I usually wear a thrifted packable down jacket) allows me to wear my pretty wool coat all* winter. Honestly game changer. *I still wear a parka if it’s heavily precipitating so my pretty wool coat doesn’t smell like a wet dog lol

Salt stain on leather boots is my pet peeve. I wear Icebreaker, Terramar wool skin, and Wicked Wool base layer when winter hiking/snowshoeing in high altitude. I have 2 down mini skirts to wear over jeans and pants to keep bum warm. I also wear down gaiter under pant leg. It is amazing how a thin layer of down can keep core temp. I just bought a pair of down filled pants on Amazon because the power of thin layer of down to cold proof. In winter I feel like an accessory shop. Every time before going out, I put on hat, scarf, glove liner, and mittens (also balaclava if windy). Every time I enter indoor space, I take them off. I have a foldable shopping bag in my tote just for keeping these in one place so that I don’t lose any.

I see a few Albertans in the comments already, hahaha. It's miserable over here. I also work in a shipping warehouse so I'm constantly getting exposed to the cold winds. The Uniqlo heattech has helped me SO MUCH. I also have a heattech scarf that is super cozy. :) Great tips though! I need to get some of those fur insoles. Thank you for the Kamik recommendation. First moved to a climate with snow last year and I was not prepared in the shoe department haha. I have been looking for something that isn’t super bulky but that I also won’t mind getting a little dirty when I walk my dog. REI had some good deals on them and I snagged a pair. The convenient zipper sold me as I hate having to lace and unlace when I’m just trying to run out the door.

Thanks for the video. I live in the Central Highlands of Victoria, Australia. Our Winters are freezing by Australian standards, and warm by Canadian standards. Most Winter days are about +5C - +10C with nights around -4C - +2C. We don’t get much snow (none this year, usually 2-3 days each Winter), but frost is common as is drizzle and the windchill can reduce temperatures by up to 10C. Over the past 2 years I’ve bought 3 wool/cashmere coats from Canada as they’re warm enough for our coldest days, stylish and affordable. I also have a Patagonia Puffer for walks around the lake or when it’s raining. Cashmere scarves, and merino or cashmere jumpers with a long sleeve T are enough and there’s no need for long John’s/thermals. Boots that cope with the cold/ice combined with thick wool socks round things out. I don’t wear hats, gloves or mittens. Hoods and pockets are sufficient. For me, my Canadian coats (Aritzia) have been a game changer as Australian coats are not quite warm enough for my climate. Once I tried on a Canada Goose coat and almost melted: way too warm for our climate.

Great video and it’s good to see someone cover dressing for the cold in so much detail. I’m from Canberra in Australia. Our winters are mild by your standards but still on the cool side. Winter days can go up to 10-12 degrees in the day and slipping below zero to about minus 5 degrees at night. The big killer is wind chill but I’m sure you have to deal with that too. I live in a black cashmere sweater and black puffy jacket in winter. I walk my dog every morning so a puffy , beanie and gloves are my go-to essentials. I don’t ski any more but my husband still does and we go to overseas ski resorts so I’m used to layering up for the snow. The coldest place I’ve been to is - you guessed it - Canada!

I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil and while it's currently summer, our winters seem like they're getting colder every year. I remember the lowest temps being around 8°C as a kid, now they're around 3°C. Obviously nothing to a Canadian but none of our buildings have heating which means you really have to rely on warm clothes in the winter, even at home or work. I'm especially awful at dealing with the cold though, so these tips are actually useful 😅 I got merino socks for a trip to Patagonia and just ended up wearing them at home all the time. Got an alpaca sweater there too and it's a lifesaver!

I moved from Victoria to Nova Scotia a few years ago and was prompted to invest in my first real winter coat! I personally hate the feeling of long underwear or leggings under my pants, even if they’re thin, so I opted for a down puffer coat that hits just below mid calf. I find this keeps me warm on the coldest winter days when paired with winter boots and allows me to wear pants normally.

LOL only thing I would add is a pair of cozy warm slippers for around the house and a good travel cup that actually keeps your coffee warm when you are outside. I mean that's not technically part of the wardrobe, but it's definitely an essential accessory. 😊 I am going to look into the WindRiver boots! Californian now living in Eastern Europe with cold, rainy winters/springs, definitely since last winter when changing to wool socks I was amazed by how much warmer they were than the fluffy, soft polyester socks I thought had been warm! Boy was I wrong. Even thin wool socks are way warmer even though they don't look like it. Will be looking for more natural materials from now on. Have also noticed they're way more breathable (wool, silk, cotton). Nothing beats nature's thousands of years of evolution on those sheep/silkworm cocoons/plants I guess.

Thank you for this video. It’s going to get cold in Georgia where I live. I used to live in Ohio. And we moved south to get away from the cold. I was going to wear a blouse and jeans. But I’m afraid it will be too cold when I go out with the dogs. And to feed the cats. I fond a velour like jogging suit in my closet. I may wear that to stay warm. I could wear my blouse under my blue cashmere sweater with jeans and leggings under my jeans. My daughter and her family always complain it’s too hot in my house. So I will be turning the heat down. So they will freeze me to death, anyway. I might order a pair of fleece liner leggings. Then it will never be this cold here again. But I will buy some, just in case.I might do that, I have puffer jackets. And I’ve seen some wool coats that I like. Thanks for this video. I have forgotten what all to wear when it’s cold. It’s been a few years. And my blood has thinned. I can’t handle the cold anymore. 😊

These would be good ideas if I ever got to experience -40 or -50 degrees. My friends are often shocked at how cold tolerant I am (even my boyfriend who loves winter is amazed, he was shocked at how much heat I produce the first time he hugged me). I can walk around in minus-20 Celsius temperatures wearing just a sleeveless dress and scarf and feel perfectly comfortable and minus-30 Celsius wearing a hat, coat, and gloves and feeling perfectly fine being outside in it for hours. I've always wanted to experience actual cold, like at least minus-40 or colder, ideally minus-70 or colder.

Beyond that I just much prefer the look of a wool coat and i wear those layered under with merino wool + more wool. We have many frigid winter days in Ottawa and I hate the look of parkas too much to wear them that often. Like you said, some of it has to do with personal style too.
