Throwing a castnet for shad in the winter can be tough and somewhat dangerous. Fishing for winter catfish is made more complicated by the cold air and the cold water. There are some things you can do to optimize your catfish bait choices and how you store and keep bait in the winter.
Most catfish fishermen turn to cut bait for catfish in the winter, but some folks insist on using live bait for catfish bait. Catfishing with live bait is usually associated with flathead fishing, but many catfish anglers insist on using live bait for blue cats even in colder temperatures. I prefer cut bait in the winter, but both baits will catch fish.
