Numerous pools black with migrating fish. my cruddy cell phone footage doesn't do it justice...
It took four changes of fly rigs before we figured out what they were eating. There were no hookups until we had a 10-11 foot leader with a bead head hare and copper or a purple rain, then a 16 inch line off that with a medium sized jelly egg pattern in a peach colour with a split shot in between. (no other egg patterns worked.)
This rig proved deadly, resulting in a hookup every time the flies were placed on the right line.
Loads of hookups of powerful steel heads, giving a tremendous fight only to snap the line when we thought that we were winning. Fish were never spooky I could get snagged on the on the other side, walk across the head of the pool to free the fly and get a hookup on the first cast once back.
Was the best lazy day fishing. Spent hours at this one pool with hookup after hookup until we ran out of this egg pattern, only to walk back to the 4x4 with dead forearms and a smile on our faces.
