Fly fishing in the winter can be tough. Battling cold fingers, frozen guides, and frozen feet. However, the winter scenery can be spectacular and having entire stretches of river to yourself are definitely perks that make the challenges worth it. In this adventure, we travel to St. Joe River Idaho in hopes of finding some winter Cutthroat Trout action.

Westslope Cutthroat dude! They are getting ready to spawn this time of year they have some of the coolest colors. Specially in this river system.

Loved watching the video from 2022 as well as this one. Sold my house lot in St Marie’s on the st Joe River last year but I want to fish the St Joe in the spring before all the water comes off the mountain but this year is so warm. I live in Grangeville and I wonder if the South Fork of the Clearwater, Selway or Lochsa may be fish able before all the snowmelt comes off and the river goes to high water stage. Great videos and thanks for sharing!

Glad you enjoyed it! Pre run off fishing can be some of the best fishing all year. Lochsa can be a good option as it runs next to a major highway that gets plowed. Other rivers you mentioned can be difficulty to access, until the snow melts.
